From the Principal Welcome back to our final term for 2020. The team are looking forward to the many successes to be celebrated in term 4. I would like to thank Mr Mackenzie and the team that looked after PSPC during my recent Long Service Leave. During my absence the installation of the air conditioning units were completed and I know our students and staff are enjoying the addition of these units in the classroom spaces. Timely completion with the hot summer months before us. We have had a few changes to our staff over the past weeks also. Miss Bridgette O’Donnell has taken up a position as Acting Deputy Principal at Picnic Creek State School for term 4, we wish her well in this new adventure. Mrs Louise Sheppard has returned part time from Maternity leave and is supporting our Support teachers (Literacy/Numeracy) to provide intervention for students this term. Miss Heidi Parkinson, administration officer will leave us this Friday to support a family business, we thank Heidi for all the work done to support the PSPC community in her short time here. Book Week was postponed from earlier in the year and is now on 17th October—23rd October. On Wednesday 21st October, we are having our annual Book Week dress up day. Students can come dressed up as their favourite characters from a book. PSPC will be a polling booth at the upcoming State Election on October 31st 2020 for your convenience. We look forward to a wonderful final term. Positive Behaviour for Learning Focus

Learning to Read Phonics— Part of teaching children to read involves teaching them which sounds the letters make. However, this can’t be taught effectively until they have well developed phonological awareness. That is, hearing the sounds in words. Teaching children letters and sounds before they have developed phonological awareness is pointless. For example, they need to know the sound ‘d’ in the word dog, before teaching them the letter ‘d’ and that it makes the sound ‘d’. Once your child can name the sounds in a word orally, for example, the word ‘dog’ has a ‘d’ ‘o’ and ‘g’ sound in it, then they can learn the letters and the sounds that match the letters. Teaching letters (graphemes) and the sounds (phonemes) has a sequence. We start with the consonants, then the vowels and their corresponding sounds. Then we move onto the blended letters and sounds and the middle vowel sounds in words. There are 44 different sounds in the English language (phonemes) represent by mixtures of 26 letters (graphemes) in the alphabet. We begin teaching phonics in term 2 of Prep, after we have taught phonological awareness. This teaching continues until the end of Year 2 when all students should know phonics completely.
