to not take risks during these difficult circumstances, and beespecially cautious during these extreme weather events.

Please take care over the coming days. The safety of ourstudents, staff and wider school communities is always ourhighest priority.

No Hat No Sun

With the extreme weather conditions we are currently facing, itis important to remember that our school has a “No Hat, NoSun” policy.

Every child is required to wear a school hat whenever theyare playing outside, during PE and sporting activities. Childrenwithout a hat will be required to remain under shaded areas. These hats are readily available from our Uniform Shop at theTuckshop.

DO YOU KNOW THE PROCEDURES? - BEFOREAND AFTER SCHOOL

As the weather is warming up we have noticed that more andmore students are coming to school to enjoy time with theirfriends before their day of learning begins. Likewise, teachersalso use this valuable time to place the final touches on planningfor engaging lessons in the classroom or engage in professionalconversations. To allow teachers this time and to ensure thesafety of all students, we would ask that you re-mind yourchildren of the following:

A great use of time before school could look like the following:

We encourage students, for their safety, to go straight homeafter their teachers release them from class. We appreciate yoursupport with this. It helps our school run smoothly.

Year 3 Poetry

Building on from the Year 3 excursion toSea Life the Year 3 students have beenwriting poems about the beach andbirthday parties. The students have beenexploring what the places, look, feel andsound like and have also used a range oflanguage conventions including alliteration

and onomatopoeia to develop the mood of the poem.

A student from 3LD wrote this poem in the lead up to herassessment about mornings at school. Well done!

The students from 3KB came up this week too, to share theirincredible poems that they had written for assessment. Checkout their incredible work!

Unitassessments and class work are beingfinalised before the end of year report card. The process for developing the 2020classes has begun, so as you would beaware this is a very busy time across theschool.

Keep Cool

Australia Zoo Excursion

Friday of Week 4, students in Year 4 went to Australia Zoo fortheir excursion. Upon return from their amazing excursion toAustralia Zoo, students have been involved in class discussionsabout the animals they encountered. They identified whatanimals were native to Australia and what animals had beenintroduced to the Zoo for various reasons such as breeding, education and protection.

Whilst at the zoo they were able to see a wide range of variousanimals and the habitats they lived in. A particular highlightwas the birds in the wetlands. As they were observing thedifferent types of birds, ironically it rained and everyone got

a bit wet! Students were very lucky to spot the Jabiru andanother spectacular bird they sighted was the Cassowary. Thisprehistoric, flightless bird is an endangered animal whichintegrates wonderfully into their Science unit of work this term.Another animal students learnt about during the spectacularshow held in the “Crocoseum”, was of course the crocodile. They gained some great knowledge and now hold a soft spotfor these misunderstood reptiles. A number of the humblewombats were spotted by students, which is also anendangered animal to Australia. Some even had the chance topat a koala and feed the kangaroos.

As part of our Science unit students are conducting researchabout an endangered animal and what can be done to assist itssurvival. The experience at Australia Zoo certainly ignited somepassion from our students for the creatures around us and whatwe can do to help keep these unique animals alive.

Talking to and/or approaching students

Parents are reminded not to approach or talk to any studentson the school site who are not members of your own immediatefamily. It is an offence for an adult to approach anybody else’schild and speak, swear, threaten or make rude gestures towarda student. If any adult approaches your child on the schoolgrounds please report it to the school office.

Parents and visitors should also ensure that they sign on at theoffice before visiting classrooms and students. This procedureis in place for not only student safety but parent and visitorsafety as well. Thank you to all of our visitors who are alreadydiligently doing this.

Have a great week.

Reboot

The Wild andEmotional Brains

In order to learn, our brainsmust feel safe. The primaryrole of the brain is survival. When the brain detects danger, the “alarm system” quicklysends a message to another part of the brain which triggers thefight-or-flight response.

Our survival response becomes abnormal when it is stuck inoverdrive. For some children, the survival response becomesthe default setting in the brain and they are constantly onhigh-alert. A brain that is stuck in survival does not allow forthe Smart brain to be turned on, using functions like reasoning, problem solving and learning new information.

As parents, it is important that you meet the needs of yourchildren. To create well-regulated children, we need to provideroutine and procedure and a safe place where they know they

are loved. Staff at Morayfield East are meeting the needs ofthe students each and every day through using the Rebootstrategies and creating engaging learning environments forthem to feel safe and learn.

Have a great week.

Student Resource Scheme

Our school manages a Student Resource Scheme (SRS) asa way of providing quality consumables and resources forstudents, saving parents/caregivers money and the need toshop for school books. The scheme also allows students tohave the learning requisites available efficiently and effectivelywith minimum inconvenience. Participation in the scheme isvoluntary. Parents/caregivers either pay the fee or purchaseALL the items on the Year Level list. The participation fee iseconomical because the school purchases quality items in bulkand some resource items are recycled, spreading the cost overseveral years.

Prep to Year Five: The fee is used to purchase all thestationery needs of your child – exercise books, pencils, rulers, erasers, glue, folders, etc. It also supplies other equipment suchas scissors, calculators, dictionaries and atlases. The schemeprovides this package for a set fee. It is not available in part. Acopy of the equipment list for each year level is available fromthe office if you choose not to join the scheme and purchasethe items yourself.

Years Six: Students have a slightly different package wherecertain items are included but others must be supplied andreplenished by individual students. This is to prepare them forhigh school and encourage ownership and responsibility fortheir own equipment. See the year six booklists for furtherdetails.

To enable materials to be utilised in the first week ofschool, payment should be made before the end of thisyear, or for new enrolments during the first week of school. For any special payment arrangements, please discuss thematter with our Business Manager, Tracey Day. Studentswill not be issued with materials until they have joined thescheme with a 50% payment and any outstanding moneyfrom the previous year’s scheme has been paid.

Parents/caregivers who do not wish to participate in thescheme are expected to provide all necessary stationery, reference books and resources for their child/ren asdetailed on the Year Level lists.

Literacy is about how we use our language to:

The Early Start literacy materials support teachers to find outyour child’s early literacy skills by using a series of tasksdeveloped specifically for Queensland.

While schools do not report on Early Start results, teachersare able to provide you with feedback on how you can furthersupport the development of your child’s early literacy skills.

Semester Two Report Cards (viaemail)

The completion of teaching and learning for2019 is fast approaching, and with it comesfinal preparation for academic reporting.Teachers and students are working hard toprovide every opportunity for students todemonstrate their knowledge, skills and

understanding in specific learning areas and subjects.

At this time, I would like to remind parents and carers toconfirm, register or update your current email address inpreparation for Semester 2 Report Cards. This can be doneby contacting our office staff directly on 54288 444 or throughthe QParent Portal (if you have registered for this service). Allreport cards are scheduled to be released in the last week ofthe school year.

Looking into the future of our reporting process, we wouldlike to consider moving towards reducing our environmentalfootprint further by only distributing report cards via email(unless requested otherwise). Given we have 930+ students;of this number in first semester we only had approximately 75students who did not have an emailed report card.

Sports Report –Brett McEvoyWhat a weekend we had as a school. Oursenior mixed touch team attended theQueensland All Schools TouchChampionships at Cleveland. We playedand won all our pool games on Saturdaydefeating Coomera Rivers State School, StAugustine’s and Banksia Beach. Byfinishing on top of the pool it gave us the

chance to playoff in the top finals. Unfortunately on the Sundaywe went down in a fighting effort against Upper Coomera StateCollege. That loss left us finishing 11th overall in the state. I’dlike to firstly thank and congratulate the kids on all their hardwork and effort. Their commitment to training was outstandingoften training up to 8 times per week with Gala Day and touchtraining. But not once did they not want to. I would also like tocongratulate them on a fantastic effort and result. It’s been apleasure to coach these young stars and watch them grow overtime. A big thank you to all the parents involved, for yoursupport, getting the boys and girls to the games andencouraging them to be their best. Without you it’s notpossible. Finally a big thanks to Mrs Jacqui Clyne. She hasgone above and beyond in giving up her time to help with thisteam. I and I know the students have really appreciated it.

In other sporting news we have had Japheth Ah Kiong andBenson Mason selected in their respective SamoanQueensland Rugby Union team, as well PJ Leituvaa who wasselected in the Australian team which competed at the OceaniaCup. Teams came from all over Australia to compete at thisevent. What a fantastic achievement by these three younggentlemen.

Finally don’t forget our Sports Awards on Thursday 5December beginning at 2pm. We will be presenting MVPs ofsports, district champions and district and regional

representatives. We also be announcing our boy and girl sportschampions for years 4 and 5.
