The Shift in Luxury

Meetings & Events

The face of luxury is changing. The definition of luxury is changing. Luxury is in the eye of the beholder and the perception of luxury today is one of transformation, education and engagement. Things we may not have considered “luxury” in the past, are now becoming more acceptable for the sake of doing good for the environment, for humanity, for the planet… For instance, refillable full size soap dispensers instead of disposable little bottles which cause less waste and damage to the environment are more common in luxury hotels now and this becomes a part of the experience as a transformation of the individual. This is not only the case with Millennial travelers but with the older generations as well. Baby boomers and Gen-Xers care about their footprint and legacy, as much as Milennials do.

Communal spaces are still popular and luxury tents and RV parks are popping up everywhere: Luxpitality features Autocamp in Santa Barbara. How about Marriott/Starwood “glamping” tents at Coachella? And check out Collective Retreats for “exploring extraordinary destinations without sacrificing any luxuries” – they will literally put you in the middle of nowhere for a “more meaningful way to travel”. The Other Side on Harbour Island features luxury tents and shacks which boast “nomadic living” yet luxury And the list goes on…

And no, this is definitely not a new concept, but one that is certainly growing in popularity. Think about the luxury water villas in Bora Bora which have been such an exclusive destination for years. The difference now is in the more inclusive destination experience. From my own perspective I have seen the shift in luxury occur since 9/11 and again through the recession in 2008. From a time when brands bragged about their fancy rooms and products, to a shift in brands marketing their transformational, engaging and life altering experiences (i.e. Live like a Local). Travelers are more evolved and acceptance of alternate accommodations (i.e. Airbnb or luxury tents), integration in the local community we visit with the intent to engage, empathize and transform our daily lives through that experience, is the new luxury.

A report and webinar presented by Skift and Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts in Q1 2017 addresses this concept and offers a glimpse where the luxury meetings and incentives industry is headed. The following is a summary of the trends in luxury meetings and audience engagement:

The Shift in Luxury

Meetings & Events

Multidisciplinary programming and event design is on the rise:

“Festivalization of events” in the style of SxSW

Demand for unique venues, networking and teambuilding environments

Using the entire scope of the property to deliver more venues and group experiences

Offering unique venues that align with local culture

“Thinking outside the ballroom”

Settings that speak to the destination

Having access to group spaces that the individual would not normally have access to on their own

Groups are looking for more immersive, educational, engaging experiences that integrate local culture

There is a shift from local experience to finding business alignments to the goals of the group, including teambuilding and engaging the community

Align authentic local experiences with overall business goals

Engagement with local experts and influencers provides for both professional and personal development – an experience they can take back home with them

Luxury: The definition of luxury today revolves around personalization, seamless user experience, transformation and discovery, just as much as high quality product.

Transformative travel and experiential connectivity are the future of hospitality

Experiential connectivity leads to transformation

Wellness is a mainstream expectation of luxury travel

Luxury hotels are evolving as platforms for productivity supporting the individual attendees personal journey

Simplicity is the new luxury

To assist in personal transformation is luxury

To offer places for “quiet time and reflection” is luxury

Meeting designers and brands that can transform themselves, adapt and innovate in the “new luxury” arena, will stay ahead of the new luxury demands in the hospitality and events industry.

SITE | Florida & Caribbean

Board Member Interview

by Jane Scaletta

Site Membership has been invaluable to me for Education

and Networking. When I lived in Kansas City, I did not have a

local opportunity to learn about incentives. Around 1977, I

went to Site University in New York where I met other

Planners and Suppliers. Ever since then, I have found SITE to

be very valuable. I have been a member for about 40 years. I

am fortunate to meet wonderful vendors, other planners and

of course, my clients. Some say I have been a mentor to

them.

WHEN DID YOU START?

In the late 70’s

WHY DID YOU START?

I was teaching preschool and after my third daughter was

born, I had trouble finding baby sitters. When I finally did, I

went to work with my brother’s travel company Travel

Management and Invest -N- travel. Here I was exposed to

incentive travel. He left the business and I continued elsewhere.

WHAT WAS THE PASSION THAT DROVE YOU TO INCENTIVE TRAVEL?

Once I got a taste of this, I wanted more. After getting a divorce, what was part time,

became my full time vocation. I loved meeting corporate executives and the opportunity

to assist them in using Incentive travel as a marketing tool. Not only was finding the right

destination part of this, but helping them structure a return on their investment with

promotional campaign to excite their employees or customers.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST INCENTIVE PROGRAM?

One of my associated had back to back programs to Costa del Sol and I went along as a trip

director. I loved the people and of course, I loved the destination. I was hooked. Then I

started finding my own clients.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST CHALLENGING INCENTIVE PROGRAM?

There were several. One was arriving ahead of the group with the VIP’s to a final night

party located in Israel where the Dead Sea scrolls were found. The place had lights leading

the way to a beautiful desert setting with tables, candles and flowers. I immediately found

out that my suppliers forgot the portable toilets. They said “well, we have toilet paper and

there are rocks over there.” Well, Americans do not squat. We were able to run a shuttle

to a nearby Kibbutz. My Executive went along with that and told the group, what a

privilege it was to be here and this was the plan. For years, the group talked about the

fabulous experience they had. Whew!

Board Member Interview

by Jane Scaletta

Another time, we arrived in Marbella, Spain, to our 5 star hotel to find that the swimming

pool and all the area around it was undergoing construction and would not be available

along with ruining our event locations. We searched the area and found another hotel

that had a group leaving when our group would be arriving the next day. We had paid the

first hotel in full, but as we had a good relationship there they did refund our money. The

group was in the air and did not know until they arrived that they would be in a different

hotel. They hardly noticed and the company called all their homes with the new contact

information. The program was a great success!

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST REWARDING INCENTIVE PROGRAM?

That is hard to choose. I had several different programs to Australia and as this seemed to

be on everyone’s bucket list, it measured up to all their expectations.

WHAT AWARDS HAVE YOU WON PERSONALLY?

Career Accomplishments

ANY LAST COMMENTS?

Although my family has encouraged me to retire after my 80th birthday, it is not in my

long range plans. As long as I have clients, I will continue on this journey of incentive travel

that I have been on since the 1970s.

“We will mourn the loss of

a lovely lady…”

The Jamaica Tourist Board lost a longtime Miami employee,

Marcia Bullock Jobson, regional director of groups and

conventions. Bullock Jobson died on March 19 after a brief

illness. At the time of her death, Bullock had served the

tourism promotions agency for 41 years where she utilized

her vast knowledge of the travel industry and her passion for

Jamaica to create and significantly expand the groups and

conventions department.

Bullock was the recipient of numerous travel awards for her

impressive contribution to the growth of the industry. Her

most recent was the RCMA (Religious Conference

Management Association) award for outstanding performance from a US-based

professional, non-profit multi-faith organization that plans meetings, conferences and

conventions worldwide.

"Marcia was my life, my heart, my soul and my soul mate", her husband Oliver 'Bobby'

Jobson lamented. "Marcia taught me what it is to love and her departure is an emotionally

impacting shock", he continued.

Tributes continue to pour in from travel industry partners from around the world who had

the highest regard for Marcia's work ethic and for her impeccable integrity. Among her

many accomplishments was the successful promotion of Jamaican writers to new markets,

an effort that eventually led to the founding of the Calabash Book Festival in Treasure

Beach, St. Elizabeth. Donnie Dawson, deputy director of tourism for the Americas

described Bullock Jobson as a Renaissance woman who was devoutly passionate about all

aspects of Jamaica's culture. "She was a trendsetter and an inspiration to those around

her. She opened the groups and conventions department that she ran for over thirty years

and nobody knew that market segment like she did. Her passing is a tremendous loss, but

her exemplary legacy will live on", he told the Gleaner.

Dear friends

SITE Florida and the Caribbean team raised $2,240, surpassing our fundraising

goal of $1500, during our second annual participation in the Autism Speaks Walk.

In addition to our monetary goal, we aim to have a voice with legislators, to have

access to the information and resources needed, to support research and medical

discovery, and to help fund local services through the mission of Autism Speaks.

Together, we can accomplish amazing things for people living with autism.

Sincerely,

Featured Recipe:

1 Whole chicken cut into 8 pieces

2 tablespoon ground allspice

2 tablespoon onion powder

2 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg

2 teaspoon dried powdered ginger

2 teaspoon garlic powder

11/2 teaspoon red chili flakes

2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

4 tablespoons dried thyme

2 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

2 teaspoons freshly ground black

pepper

4 tablespoons old bay seasoning

2 tablespoons dark brown sugar

¼ cup lime juice

2 tablespoons white vinegar

5 tablespoons canola oil

Add all ingredients (not the chicken) to

either a bowl or food processor and

blend until smooth; let sit at room

temperature for 2 hours.

In a large bowl add chicken pieces one

at a time and rub each piece of chicken

with Jerk Paste (I suggest wearing

disposable gloves). Place in a 2.5 gallon

glad zip lock bag. Be sure to add ALL the

paste that’s remaining, if any to the bag.

Squeeze all the air out of the bag and

roll-up tight (get as much air out as

possible) using two rubber bands tie

down the rolled bag. Let marinate for no

less than 24 hours and no more than 48

hours.

Grill on a clean oiled grill on medium

heat. Grill chicken beginning with skin

side down turning 3-4 times until the

internal temperature of the largest

breast of the chicken is 165 degrees.

Serve with Black Beans and Rice, Sliced

Tomatoes with Lime and Olive Oil.

Garnish with Lime Wedges.
