TOS Newsletter May 2019 Orchid Colleagues, June is fast approaching which marks the beginning of our summer break. When I write ‘break’ I mean break from our monthly meetings and beginners courses. We all know that when you sign on to grow orchids there is really no break from caring for these little darlings! Of course, first we have our June picnic and member’s auction to help us kick off the summer. For our newer members who haven’t enjoyed a TOS picnic yet, members are asked to bring a dish to share and can also bring approximately 5 plants to submit for auction. Members who bring plants keep 75% of their auctioned sale proceeds with the TOS keeping 25%. However, all of our members are encouraged to attend regardless of their ability to bring a picnic item or plants to auction. And everyone can partake in the auction but expect to see some ‘must have’ plants to add to your collection. As much as we are looking forward to the June picnic let’s not forget to thank our volunteers who made the May meeting so good. Alice brought in another outstanding speaker in Russ Vernon who provided a great talk on Lycastes. He was so informative I might even attempt to grow these intriguing plants. Orchid Colleagues,

June is fast approaching which marks the beginning of our summer break.

The hospitality crew, Jeanette and Pat, deserve our gratitude along with any of our members who brought in a goodie or two to share. A hearty thank you to our Fred Heutte Herb and Plant Sale program volunteers who manned the TOS information table under Peter Breed’s sales tent. friends. This was the first time we aaattendedconstitutional responsibility by having an election to select our officers and Trustees for the 2019-2020 society year. We thank Elke for thinking to ask us to help her out. Finally, I speak for all of the TOS family in thanking our out going Trustees Jacqueline Hoskins and Joe Elder for a job well done in completing their terms. Volunteers like you who agree to step up and serve the society are a treasure.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at the June picnic on the 2nd at our new NBG location, the Administration Auditorium. Don’t forget to bring food in recyclable or reusable containers and plants to auction. Have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend!

attended this Ghent event and more then several people expressed interest in attending future TOS meetings which is a good first step in recruiting new members. Paul, Dave and Joanne, Frank, Bert, Gill and Darrin graciously spent part of their weekend spreading the word about orchids and the benefits of a membership in the TOS. That same gorgeous May weekend our novice growers were treated to an outstanding Cattleya potting class at Plato and Karon’s house. They both went above and beyond in hosting and feeding us. Thank you doesn’t go far enough in expressing our gratitude to Plato and Karon. A late thank you to Patsy, Frank, Richard Palley and new member Betsy Marshall for making the trip to Williamsburg to pick up old memorabilia and plant stands from our longtime and dear member, Elke Zuckerwar’s house.

TIDEWATER ORCHID SOCIETY Minutes

Membership Meeting May 5, 2019

President Jamie Krochmal brought the May member meeting to order at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens at 2:03 p.m. He thanked Plato and Karon Mathews for hosting a new member’s potting session at their home. The session was great and so were the ribs! Each member that attended received a division of Bc. Hawaiian Agenda ‘Florida Winter’ courtesy of John Odom of Odom Orchids. A huge thank you to the Mathews for hosting this fun day!

Darrin Duling, Gill Gillespie, Dave and Joann Bryan, Paul Chung, Bert Bennett, Frank Drew, Brian Morgan and others participated in the Fred Heutte Herb Sale and Festival on April 27 and 28. Peter Breed had a tent at the event. The exposure was great for the society and they obtained several new member candidates.

The April meeting minutes were discussed. Motion to the floor to approve the minutes as written. Motion seconded. Membership voted. The meeting minutes were approved.

Ellen Hansen was out of town and Jamie Krochmal provided the Treasurer’s report. The Society has $8,899.27 in the bank account and the Kaplan/Dalis Foundation balance is $17,293.62.

Alice Snyder, Vice President, discussed the next few programs. The June 2 meeting will be the member plant auction and pot luck picnic. This will be held in the left side of the rotunda building. Please note that parking is limited at that building. Attendees that are able to walk from the current parking area to the rotunda building are encouraged to do so. The meeting will begin at 4:00 not 2:00. Members were reminded that there is a limit of 5 plants per member. The proceeds are split between the Society and the member. The member receives 75% of the proceeds and the Society receives 25%. There will be great plants for auction. All forms of payment will be accepted – cash, credit, checks. Bring money! Help support your TOS!!!

Remember: For those bringing food for the pot luck picnic in June, please pay attention to the Garden’s recycling policy. Any plastic containers must be removed from the premises after the event. Purchasing party tray containers from the grocery store may not be compliant with the biodegradable policy of the Gardens.

The next meeting after the picnic will be Sunday, August 25th, and our own Peter Breed will be speaking on vandas.

Committee reports:

Education Committee: Patsy Temple announced that the next beginner class will be next Saturday, May 11th, at 10 a.m. at Frank Drew’s. This will be a repotting class. Attendees are limited to two plants each and should also bring their own potting supplies.

Membership Committee: Patsy Temple introduced several new members at the meeting, Betsy Marshall. Betsy’s sister Julie Virok was also at the meeting as a guest. New member Sue Budorick was at the meeting and brought her friend Alecia as a guest. Alecia Fisher joined and David Marshall also joined before he left.

John has kept this orchid for over 30 years because it was one of his first Phals with yellow in it. It has always been a little quirky, like it is on the verge of a mutation, but he noticed for the first time this year it has gone full peloric with 3 lips balanced around the central column. Peloric means deformed, but in this case, in a good way. It is where many flower improvements come from like double roses. The other flowers on the stem are also peloric.

John Zukosky’s In Bloom: Hardy Chinese Ground Orchids, Bletilla

striata, will bloom for 6 weeks in zones 5, 6, 7, and 8. This species grows 18 inches tall in raised beds outside. These are growing in full sun, but they will survive a wide range of conditions. I

also have 2 hybrids that grow twice as big, and they are more warm tolerant.

John Zukosky’s In Bloom: Phal Cassandra x Deventeriana
