From the Pastor’s Pen Gathering in September — I suspect all of us love the beginning of a new season. The halcyon days of summer provide opportunity for many to travel, explore, and divert from the rituals and routines that define our lives. I believe most of us, however, also look forward to returning home and those rituals and routines that make our lives a little more stable and secure. One of the rituals, in the good sense of that word, is gathering as a community for worship, study, and spiritual growth. Religious researchers have always found that community is fertile ground where people blossom spiritually. One of the places we seek to provide community is through our weekly disciplines of Bible study, worship, fellowship, and discipleship. First Baptist provides Bible study communities each week where people gather in their rooms to learn and grow from the weekly discipline of reading and studying the sacred scrip- tures. If you are not involved in a class, speak to Tom Allen, our Minister of Education. He will be happy to assist you with finding a place to connect and grow. If you are looking for a place for your children or youth to connect and grow in faith, speak with Bryan Moore, our Minister of Youth & Students, or Carolyn Helms, our Interim Assistant Minister of Children & Families, and they will guide you to the opportunities for your children. Of course, we have a wonderful music ministry for all ages. Greg Lundberg, our Minister of Music, and Susan Ward, our Music Associate, will be glad to suggest opportunities for music. All of these provide places for community and spiritual growth. Details on all of our many classes and activities may be found in this issue of The Tie. Christian Ethics: An Essential Guide — I will be leading our exploration of Christian Ethics this fall on Wednesday evenings. I have chosen the short guide by Robin Lovin, Dean and Professor of Ethics at Perkins School of Theology, SMU. This book is easy to read and has many merits for the way it approaches the discipline of thinking ethically. Regrettably, our culture’s habits of slinging mud and name calling have undermined the practice of ethical reflection—thinking through the issues and the disciplines of drawing upon the social and spiritual resources for discerning what is just, fair, and ethical. On Wednesday evenings this fall, we explore how to approach the task of thinking ethically. The Christian life is an honest search for “the good life in a world created by God.” Living an ethical life is thinking about the choices we make about the good life. Ethics is the study of those choices. Those choices can sometimes be terribly difficult choices. Ethics not only studies those choices but the consequences of those choices. We’ll look at the themes of choices, rules, goals, virtues (graces), church, and society. Participants will have a chance to purchase the book for $10. Diaconate Ordination will be held Sunday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m. I am grateful for the new deacons who will begin their term of service this October. The 2019-2022 deacons include: Trey Bolton, Ken Crow, Neil Godfrey, Doug Hammond, Penny Higgins, John Kinney, Tom McFadyen, and John Roscoe. Each September, we celebrate Deacon Ordination for those elected deacons who have not been previously ordained. This year, Trey Bolton, Doug Hammond, Tom McFadyen, and John Roscoe will be ordained in the 11:00 a.m. service on September 15. Gathering in September — I suspect all of us love the beginning of a new season. The halcyon days of

summer provide opportunity for many to travel, explore, and divert from the rituals and routines that define our lives.

I believe most of us, however, also look forward to returning home and those rituals and routines that make our lives

a little more stable and secure. One of the rituals, in the good sense of that word, is gathering as a community for

worship, study, and spiritual growth. Religious researchers have always found that community is fertile ground where

people blossom spiritually. One of the places we seek to provide community is through our weekly disciplines of

Bible study, worship, fellowship, and discipleship. First Baptist provides Bible study communities each week where

people gather in their rooms to learn and grow from the weekly discipline of reading and studying the sacred scrip-

tures. If you are not involved in a class, speak to Tom Allen, our Minister of Education. He will be happy to assist

you with finding a place to connect and grow. If you are looking for a place for your children or youth to connect and

grow in faith, speak with Bryan Moore, our Minister of Youth & Students, or Carolyn Helms, our Interim Assistant

Minister of Children & Families, and they will guide you to the opportunities for your children. Of course, we have a

wonderful music ministry for all ages. Greg Lundberg, our Minister of Music, and Susan Ward, our Music Associate,

will be glad to suggest opportunities for music. All of these provide places for community and spiritual growth.

Details on all of our many classes and activities may be found in this issue of The Tie.

Christian Ethics: An Essential Guide — I will be leading our exploration of Christian Ethics this fall on

Wednesday evenings. I have chosen the short guide by Robin Lovin, Dean and Professor of Ethics at Perkins School

of Theology, SMU. This book is easy to read and has many merits for the way it approaches the discipline of thinking

ethically. Regrettably, our culture’s habits of slinging mud and name calling have undermined the practice of ethical

reflection—thinking through the issues and the disciplines of drawing upon the social and spiritual resources for

discerning what is just, fair, and ethical. On Wednesday evenings this fall, we explore how to approach the task

of thinking ethically. The Christian life is an honest search for “the good life in a world created by God.” Living

an ethical life is thinking about the choices we make about the good life. Ethics is the study of those choices. Those

choices can sometimes be terribly difficult choices. Ethics not only studies those choices but the consequences of

those choices. We’ll look at the themes of choices, rules, goals, virtues (graces), church, and society. Participants will

have a chance to purchase the book for $10.

Diaconate Ordination will be held Sunday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m. I am grateful for the new

deacons who will begin their term of service this October. The 2019-2022 deacons include: Trey Bolton, Ken Crow,

Neil Godfrey, Doug Hammond, Penny Higgins, John Kinney, Tom McFadyen, and John Roscoe. Each September,

we celebrate Deacon Ordination for those elected deacons who have not been previously ordained. This year, Trey

Bolton, Doug Hammond, Tom McFadyen, and John Roscoe will be ordained in the 11:00 a.m. service on September 15.

I hope you will keep all of our deacons in your prayers as they seek to minister to the needs of the church, this staff,

and this community.

Greeting, Senior Adults! We hope that everyone has had a great summer!

Your Senior Adult Ministry Committee met in August to start planning for the Fall Season. We are looking forward to beginning our new year of Seniors on the Move as we welcome back “The Five Tenors” on Monday, September 9, at 5:00 p.m. The Senior Adult Ministry Committee is in charge of set up and clean up this month. Please bring a covered dish, side dish, and/or dessert to share. Remember, someone will be at the old portico door on the lower level to assist you with your covered dish. Just pull under the portico and then you may park your vehicle.

WOW (Widows or Widowers) will be gathering on Thursday, September 26. Plans are in the works. Be looking for a sign-up sheet in the future.

We look forward to all of the gatherings in the months ahead! Please check out our Senior Adult Ministry Activities bulle-tin board regularly, located across from the Fellowship Hall, for upcoming events and opportunities to be involved in. Your Senior Adult Ministry Committee continues to actively plan upcoming events and opportunities. We look forward to seeing you this month as we gather together as Seniors on the Move!

MusikGarten classes for children will be on hiatus as we continue to revamp the program. If you are interested in

teaching in our new MusikGarten classes, please contact Susan Ward at (910) 692-8750 or

[email protected]. Stay tuned for more information!

One consistent way to miss out on hearing God’s voice has to do with what some people call “the tyranny of the immediate.” Jobs. Deadlines. Family matters. The list goes on. Our response is often, “This can’t wait.” “I’ve got to get this done.” The pace of life is fast and demanding. We have more “time-saving” devices at our disposal to make life simpler, yet they all seem to consume just a little bit more of our time each day! Texts, emails, smartphones, responsibili-ties, meetings, stress...this and that. I’ll let you in on a secret ...those things are not going away any time soon. So it’s impractical to think that someone can wave a magic wand and solve the issue of being busy. In the midst of all of this “living,” how can we hear God’s voice? How do we stay in contact with the Holy Spirit and receive clear directions on how to live well?

A great reminder of the cost of busyness is found in Luke 10:38–42: “As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distract-ed by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’ ‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered. ‘You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’”

We all find ourselves in Martha’s shoes, right? Running about taking care of this and that. And they are important things. I think Martha often gets a bad rap. It wasn’t as if her tasks were meaningless. Not so. However, there was some-thing more important at hand—spending time with God. I think wisdom is the central issue here. How do we make wise decisions and the best choices?

I am working toward making wiser and better choices. I’m trying to focus on things that I’m passionate about and not allow less meaningful tasks to hold me in their grip. The chal-lenge in all of this is that the most important thing in our lives should be our relationship to God, and we miss hearing his voice if our lives are dominated by outside forces that are claiming our time. We can’t really create more time, but we can use our time more meaningfully. What could be more meaningful than starting out your day with prayer? Martin Luther, when once asked what his plans for the follow-ing day were, answered, “Work, work, from early until late. In fact, I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer!”

Now that is counterintuitive. You have a busy day ahead so you get up to pray more? But Luther’s point is well taken. When we find ourselves overcommitted, our first instinct should be to pray more. — Greg

At this meeting, we will collect items to assist our Sonshine Learning Center: hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, paper towels, and boxes of tissues. Looking forward to resuming

our time together on the 3rd Monday of each month.

The Mission Action Group meets on the third Monday of each month at 11:45 a.m. in Room 206. For more information, contact Bonnie

Elhart at (910) 420-2513 or [email protected] or Patricia Teague at (910) 692-8867 or [email protected].

NOTES OF GRAT TUDE Dear Church Family, Thank you so much for the recent recognition service celebrating my fifteenth anniversary on staff at First Baptist Southern Pines. It has been my privilege to serve you as treasurer over the past thirty-three years (the first eighteen years as a volunteer), and I hope in some small way I have measured up to your expectations. I’m also thankful for the gift that was presented in my honor. I’ll still be around for the next five months, but I’m looking forward to retirement at the end of this coming January. God bless and best wishes for the future. John [Beith] To our Church Family, Thank you so much for all the thoughts, prayers, calls, and texts over the last couple of years during my mom’s declining health and our loss of her. We are blessed to have you all! We ask for continued prayers for my dad for his health and his grief. In His Love, Peggy [Hendrix] & Family Dear Church Family, To each one of you who prayed for me, sent cards and notes, provided food, called, and stopped by for a visit, I am so very grateful. My time in the hospital and recovering at home were made more bearable by your care for me. Thank you for your many kindnesses and your caring. I'm so thank-ful for my church home and wonderful friends. I love you all, Myra [Robinson]

“And the King shall answer and say unto them, ‘Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my

brethren, ye have done it unto me.’” — Matthew 25:40 Operation Inasmuch is a one-day blitz where we as a church congregation get out and serve our church members and community members in need. Last year when we conducted our Inasmuch Day, we were a part of over 400 churches who turned out 20,000 volun-teers that impacted more than 150,000 people. Our Inasmuch day will be Saturday, October 12. We will have projects and tasks for all age groups. Some of the projects we will be participating in as a church this year include Canned Food Drive, Sewing Blankets for Honduras, Scrapbooks for Foster Children, Prayer Teams, Yard Clean Up, and many others. We will start the sign-up process on September 8. We hope you will prayerfully consider joining a team and making a difference to help those in need. If you have questions or would like to lead a team, contact Keith Dangerfield at [email protected] or (910) 783-8762.
