While we must criticize and do all we can to stop those who force others to convert or live by any particular Faith - and must repudiate our own sad history of forcing people to be baptized - we cannot stop respectfully proclaiming - and giving witness by the example of our own life- that Jesus - and only Jesus - is the Way , the Truth and the Life . How is Jesus, as this Preface says, the ‘Way that leads to [God?]’ As our God in human form, only Jesus speaks AS God; all others merely speak about or for God. And while others can call and challenge us to live as brothers and sisters, only Jesus makes us His sisters and brothers in Baptism. So He alone provides the framework or family structure by which we truly become brothers and sisters of Him and each other under the “one God and Father of us all.” [Ephesians 4:6]

In week 4 of my summer sacred study series on the 4 Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs [EPFVN] - which is really only one EP with 4 themes or variations

- we appropriately reflect on the Preface or Introduction for EPFVN-III: ‘Jesus, the Way to the Father.’ For this variation of the EPFVN is suggested when Mass is offered: For the Evangelization of Peoples, For Persecuted Christians, For the Nation or State, For Those in Public Office, For a Governing Assembly, At the Beginning of the Civil Year, and For the Progress of Peoples. So this is the perfect Preface to pray at Mass on Independence Day weekend

Preface for EPFVN-III: Jesus, the Way to the Father

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,

always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

through Christ our Lord. For by your Word you created the worldand you govern all things in harmony.

You gave us the same Word made flesh as Mediator, and he has spoken your

words to usand called us to follow him.

He is the way that leads us to you,the truth that sets us free,

the life that fills us with gladnessThrough your Son you gather men and

women, whom you made for the glory of your

name, into one family, redeemed by the Blood of his Cross and signed with the seal of

the Spirit. Therefore, now and for ages unending,

with all the Angels, we proclaim your glory,as in joyful celebration we acclaim:

”And The Word Was Made Flesh.” This Preface is rooted in the Fourth Gospel, the one according to Saint John, which begins by declaring how God’s Word was present BEFORE creation, is present IN creation and THROUGH WHOM all creation continues to exist. For the Word IS God, who became flesh [C.f. John 1:4a] so God could live among

us - as one of us: a human person. But with all due respect for other religions, the non-religious and even the anti-religious, all of whom we seek to live with in harmony, we must profess our firm conviction that if we are not one nation under God, we are doomed to fail … as did every nation and empire that rejected or ignored God!Jesus is “the Way, the Truth and the Life.” This quote, also taken from the Fourth Gospel [C.f. John 14:6] places on the lips of Jesus a statement that causes some to cringe. For if, as Jesus said, HE is the way, the truth and the life, any other ‘way,’ ‘truth’ or ‘life’ can - at best- only point to the one true Way, Truth and Life. While we must criticize and do all we can to stop those who force others to convert or live by any particular Faith - and must repudiate our own sad history of forcing people to be baptized - we cannot stop respectfully proclaiming - and giving witness by the example of our own life- that Jesus - and only Jesus - is the Way, the Truth and the Life. So He alone provides the framework or family structure by which we truly become brothers and sisters of Him and each other under the “one God and Father of us all.” [Ephesians 4:6] How is Jesus “the Truth that sets us free?” Only in Jesus can we find the fullness of revelation and the complete source of divine grace; thus all other ‘truths’ are lacking something. However, unless we totally live by His ‘truth’ all cannot be free. Case in point: until we respect and uphold the dignity of every human person from conception to death - the unborn, unwanted and many others - are NOT free. How is Jesus “the life that fills us with gladness?” Only Jesus can offer us the things that last forever: full remission of our sins, which He paid for us by redeeming us by His Blood shed on the Cross; a seat at the eternal banquet table in heaven; the graces that come to us from the Sacraments, especially His most holy Body and Blood. We are even sealed or branded with the Spirit of

God so we can be the channels of God’s love, life, hope and peace to our fellow citizens of the USA and to all the world. And may God bless America! Happy 4th of July!

This Weekend’s ReadingsFourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Ezekiel 2:2-5Ezekiel is moved to respond to the call of God and to accentuate his teaching with a direct reference to the Word of God.Second Reading: II Corinthians 12:7-10Paul had questioned the value of his suffering, and God replied, “My grace is enough for you, for strength is made perfect

in weakness.” Paul then realized that although he was weak against persecution, he was strong in faith.Gospel: Mark 6:1-6aJesus could do little for those in his own part of the country, for their lack of faith in him was so great. Therefore, he spent much of his time teaching in neighboring villages instead.

As we begin the summer months, gracious and loving Jesus, remind us of Your ever present guidance and love.

Give us confidence in Your presence, remembering all that we have and let us live it in our summer experiences.

As we work, play and enjoy our family and friends this summer, may we feel Your love within us, guiding us toward all that is right and just.
