From the Parish Priest Dear Parishioners,
The rich beauty and depth of Catholic life and culture have been seriously eroded and weakened in the last 50 or so years due to many complex factors and circumstances. Many inspirational young Catholic men and women are taking key initiatives throughout the country to help build up and restore authentic Catholic culture and faith. One such initiative is The Culture Project Australia founded by a young man named Chris Da Silva. You can read a little about it on Page 2. Chris and his co-workers will be setting up a table after Mass with some of their materials. They would also warmly welcome donations towards their valuable work.
Please note: Mary Immaculate (OF) Weekday Masses for the coming fortnight will mainly be at St Elizabeth’s Chapel and next weekend’s Mary Immaculate Masses will be held in the Mary Mac Centre. We return to Mary Immaculate Church on SATURDAY 24th OCT.
An aim of the Brisbane Oratory in Formation is to make available a Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) and an Ordinary Form (OF) Mass every day of the week to give everyone the widest choice in participating in the Sacred Mystery of the Mass. We have nearly reached our goal. Consultation will always take place as changes are considered. This is only relevant to those who attend the 8am Saturday morning Mass and the 9am Sunday morning Mass at Mary Immaculate. In regard to the TLM there are many customs around the world about the way the lay faithful are invited to make the Mass responses. The Brisbane Oratory in Formation encourages everyone at a TLM to come in with all the Mass responses in so far as they feel able. This especially applies to the simple responses like “Amen”, “Et cum spiritu tuo” (and with your spirit), “Deo Gratias” (Thanks be to God) and Kyrie/Christe Eleison (Lord/Christ have mercy). We are grateful to 2 young parishioners with a knowledge of Latin who have volunteered to lead some workshops on Latin for the Mass (see page 2 for details).
A reminder about the forthcoming RCIA program for those who wish to become Catholic or for Catholics who wish to deepen their understanding of the Faith. Details on page 3.
A final reminder that the meeting for all continuing Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will be held this Tuesday,13 October at 7:30pm in the school library.
Fr Andrew Wise PP
For our reflection this week we have a beautiful prayer for before Communion which expresses a deeply Catholic response in faith to the sublime gift Jesus offers us. The gift of Himself, God and Man, in Holy Communion.
Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas (before Communion)
Almighty and Eternal God, behold I come to the sacrament of Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. As
one sick I come to the Physician of life; unclean, to the Fountain of mercy; blind, to the Light of eternal
splendour; poor and needy to the Lord of heaven and earth. Therefore, I beg of You, through Your infinite mercy
and generosity, heal my weakness, wash my uncleanness, give light to my blindness, enrich my poverty, and
clothe my nakedness. May I thus receive the Bread of Angels, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, with such
reverence and humility, contrition and devotion, purity and faith, purpose and intention, as shall aid my soul’s
salvation.
Grant, I beg of You, that I may receive not only the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of our Lord, but also its full
grace and power. Give me the grace, most merciful God, to receive the Body of your only Son, our Lord Jesus
Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, in such a manner that I may deserve to be intimately united with His mystical
Body and to be numbered among His members. Most loving Father, grant that I may behold for all eternity face
to face Your beloved Son, whom now, on my pilgrimage, I am about to receive under the sacramental veil, who
lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.
Tuesday 13th October Meeting for all continuing Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at 7:30pm in Mary Immaculate School Library (under the Church). Wednesday 21st October RCIA Introductory Evening at 7:30pm at the Parish Office. Please see notice below. Monday 9th November Josephites Meeting at 10:00am at St Fabian’s Church Hall, cnr Wilkie and Cardross Streets, Yeerongpilly. Saturday 14th November November Remembrance Mass at 10:00am, Mary Immaculate Church. Tuesday 24th November Anointing Mass at Mary Immaculate Church at 10:00am. Morning tea follows in the Marymac Centre.
COLLECTIONS LAST WEEKEND First: $1,290 Second: $3,541.60 Thank you from a grateful Parish
On Monday, Oct 12 (before the 7pm Extraordinary Form
Mass), Ben Drake will be formally received into the Catholic
Church.
Ben was baptised in the Uniting Church and now, after
some months of preparation with Fr Paul, he is ready to
become Catholic. He will receive the Sacrament of
Confirmation and during Mass receive Holy Communion for
the first time. It is through the Monday evening Mass and
Verso L’Alto catechesis and faith formation sponsored by
the Frassati Fraternity that Ben has made this journey. The
young men and women who come along on Mondays have
both inspired and assisted Ben to become Catholic. It is
wonderful to see not only the fruits of growth in faith in our
Catholic young adults but also to see that they are
attracting others who desire the Catholic Faith.

THE CULTURE PROJECT NEEDS YOUR HELP!!
The Culture Project is an initiative of young people set out to restore Catholic culture. We give talks on human dignity, Catholic sexual integri-ty and the virtues to youth groups and secondary school students, inviting our culture to be fully alive.
Members of The Culture Project commit to daily Mass, a daily Holy Hour, living in community and undertaking ongoing formation in bioethics and St John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. We are also continually raising support for our expenses, as well as running costs for the organisa-tion itself.
We are currently based in in Sydney but have been in Brisbane giving talks over the past 2 weeks. This weekend we will have a table outside the Church after Masses and we would love to share more about the mission with parishioners. We would gratefully accept any donations to help cover our living expenses. Please come and see Chris Da Silva and Frances Hopkins after Mass to find out more!
CONGRATULATIONS to Ticket 136 in our Art Union — $150 draw. The Winner has kindly donated the win to SVDP.
Only one draw left—the big one!

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B
10th/11th October, 2015
SUNDAY MASS READINGS
First Reading: Wisdom 7/7-11
I prayed, and understanding was given me; I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones; compared with her, I held riches as nothing. I reckoned no priceless stone to be her peer, for compared with her, all gold is a pinch of sand, and beside her silver ranks as mud. I loved her more than health or beauty, preferred her to the light, since her radiance never sleeps. In her company all good things came to me, at her hands riches not to be numbered. The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God
Responsorial Psalm 89 (Said by all)
Make us know the shortness of our life
that we may gain wisdom of heart.
Lord, relent! Is your anger for ever?
Show pity to your servants.
In the morning, fill us with your love;
we shall exult and rejoice all our days.
Give us joy to balance our affliction
for the years when we knew misfortune.
Show forth your works to your servants;
let your glory shine on their children.
Let the favour of the Lord be upon us:
give success to the work of our hands.
Second Reading: Hebrews 4/12-13
The word of God is something alive and active: it cuts like any double-edged sword but more finely: it can slip through the place where the soul is divided from the spirit, or joints from the marrow; it can judge the secret emotions and thoughts. No created thing can hide from him; everything is uncovered and open to the eyes of the one to whom we must give account of ourselves. The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, alleluia! Happy the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
Alleluia!
Gospel : Mark 10/17-30
Jesus was setting out on a journey when a man ran up, knelt before him and put this question to him, 'Good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.
You know the commandments: You must not kill; You must not commit adultery; You must not steal; You must not bring false witness; You must not defraud; Honour your father and mother.' And he said to him, 'Master, I have kept all these from my earliest days.' Jesus looked steadily at him and loved him, and he said, 'There is one thing you lack. Go and sell everything you own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.' But his face fell at these words and he went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked round and said to his disciples, 'How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!' The disciples were astounded by these words, but Jesus insisted, 'My children,' he said to them, 'how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.' They were more astonished than ever. 'In that case' they said to one another 'who can be saved?' Jesus gazed at them. 'For men' he said 'it is impossible, but not for God: because everything is possible for God.' Peter took this up. 'What about us?' he asked him. 'We have left everything and followed you.' Jesus said, 'I tell you solemnly, there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, father, children or land for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not be repaid a hundred times over, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and land - not without persecutions - now in this present time and, in the world to come, eternal life.' The Gospel of the Lord
Response: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ
Memorial Acclamation: Number Three Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.
