EDITORIAL From the new Editor On the grounds that my actions as Editor will no doubt speak louder than anything I might write, this statement will be brief. I do, however, want to say that it is an honor to be invited to serve as Editor of Protein Science. I particularly want to thank my predecessor, Mark Hermodson, and his staff for their outstanding service during the past decade. Mark was appointed as Editor during the time that I served as President of The Protein Society, and it has been extremely gratifying to see the progress that has occurred during the intervening period. Protein Science is now a mature forum that is well read, well appreciated, and well respected by the protein science community in general. Mark deserves great credit for all he has accomplished. My primary responsibility, and my central focus, will be to take the journal to the next level. While radical changes are neither called for nor planned, I am very open to suggestions as to how the journal might better serve the community. I consider it critical that all submissions to the journal be reviewed not only fairly but also expeditiously. We will do everything possible to see that this occurs. If authors wish to submit an especially important contribution that neces- sitates rapid handling, we will make a special effort to mini- mize the time between submission, review, and publication. Protein Science has traditionally published some in- formative reviews and interesting perspectives. These are important ways of defining emerging areas and possible new directions for Protein Science. I plan to devote per- sonal attention to recruiting authors for these articles in the future, but also invite suggestions from both readers and authors as to what topics should be covered. I want to be as open and receptive as I can to all contri- butors and readers of the journal. If you have comments, suggestions, or complaints, do not hesitate to let me know at http://[email protected]. Brian Matthews Editor, Protein Science Protein Science (2007), 16:1.
