IB Diploma Program

• The IB Diploma Program is an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepare students for success at the university and life beyond.

• Gained recognition and respect from he world’s leading universities.

IB Curriculum vs AP Courses

IB Diploma

• Comprehensive program of study

Advanced Placement

• Individual coursework, no unifying core

DP Curriculum• Must choose one subject from

each of the 5 subject groups.

• Students may choose an arts subject from Group 6 or a second from Groups 1 – 5.

• All classes are a 2 year course study

• 3 HL and 3 SL

• Group 1 Language and Literature HL

• Group 2 Language Acquisition: Spanish or French SL or HL

• Group 3 Individuals and Societies: 20th Century World History HL– Possible addition: Psychology SL or HL

• Group 4 Sciences: Environmental Systems and Societies SL – Possible additions: Biology

• Group 5 Mathematics: Math Studies SL

• Group 6 The Arts: Visual Arts or Music SL or HL

DP Core RequirementsExtended Essay

• Independent research study junior/senior year• High-level research and writing skills• Topic of your own choice, but needs to be connected one of the six DP

subject areas• Graded externally• DP students receive a supervisor for guidance and assistance • No more than 4000 words• Students should spend approximately 40 hours of work on the Extended

Essay over the course of two years (TOK)

DP Core RequirementsCAS

Creativity: arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking.

Action: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.

Service: an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student.

Students are required to:•plan activities, carry them out and reflect on what they have learned•undertake at least one interim review and a final review with their CAS adviser•take part in a range of activities, including at least one project, some of which they have initiated themselves•keep records of their activities and achievements•show evidence of achievement of the eight CAS learning outcomes.

•The guideline for the minimum amount of CAS activity is approximately the equivalent of half a day per school week (three to four hours per week), or approximately 150 hours in total, with a reasonable balance between creativity, action and service

DP Assessment

• Senior year (May)

• NO multiple choice

• Written/oral examinations that are externally marked

• Internal assessments marked by DP teachers

• 1(low) – 7 (high) point scale

• Must receive a minimum 28 points(and complete CAS) to earn the full Diploma (highest 45)

• Earn 3 points for TOK and Extended Essay

Key Findings:-Compared to a matched comparison group, DP students are more likely to:

- Go to college

- Go to a selective college

- Persist in college-DP students in college reported:

- Feeling prepared to succeed and excel in their coursework- Strong academic skills, work ethic, motivation, and time management and

willingness to seek help as sources of strength in the transition to college-level work

- Their preparation in the DP as the source of their success as college students.

* Outcomes do not take into account IB exams and overall DP scores, suggesting that the benefits extend to all DP students, not jus the ones who earn the diploma.

How do I become a full Diploma Program student?• January/February – full high school transcript review

• Commitment of academic excellence by demonstrating grades of C or higher in every subject

• Excellent attendance record (includes tardies) < 10

• Positive discipline record (academic honesty)

• One teacher recommendation completed by a teacher sponsor (end of February)

• Student interview/parent meeting

• Complete the Personal Project and earn the MYP certificate

What if I do not want or qualify for the full Diploma Program?

• DP course student

• Take DP courses based on your strengths.

• Transcript review

• Grade of C or higher in that particular subject(s)

• Attendance and Discipline records

• Teacher recommendation from a teacher in that subject area

• Student interview/parent meeting

• Other classes: regular, honors, or AP track

• PE requirement
