Most Honors and AP classes at
Daniel require summer work. If students are taking an Honors or AP
class next year, they should check to see if they have summer work.
Students having summer work need
to make a note of the deadline for submission. Summer work
assignments will be available in May (date TBD). Students should listen to
announcements for information
about obtaining their assignments. If
students miss picking up their
assignments, they can pick up a copy in Guidance or check the school

DWD students excel on Chemistry Olympiad
From the Lions’ Den Student Recognitions/Student Life
Jesse Jiang & Ian Ruohoniemi
Junior Jesse Jiang and sophomore Ian Ruohoniemi participated in the Local
Chemistry Olympiad competition on March 23rd and finished first and second,
respectively. This Olympiad, sponsored by the American Chemical Society,
consisted of a timed test of sixty very
challenging questions and was the first level of a national competition divided
into various regions.
In our region, composed of Upstate
South Carolina and Western North Carolina, Jesse and Ian finished as
the top two out of 425 AP Chemistry students who participated. As the top
finishers, Jesse and Ian advanced to the
second round of the competition on April 19th at Furman University where they
participated in the national test which included a lab practical problem.
Juniors Greg Kurfess and Matthew
Mason also scored high enough to
advance to this round of competition, but the competition is limited to two
students per school. Greg and Matthew will receive honorable mention awards
from the ACS. In addition, Jesse will
receive a special award as the top scorer in Pickens County.
Congratulations, Jesse, Ian, Greg, and
Matthew on your achievement!
2016 Prom a “huge success!” The 2016 prom, “A Night in the Orient” was an-over-the-top, huge success. 405
Daniel students, a record crowd, danced the night away. The students reported
that they had a great time. The
Anderson Civic Center was professionally and beautifully decorated in an Asian
inspired motif, by decorator Greg Hall of Hartwell, Georgia. Photographer Jacob
Dean provided an old timey photo booth with a variety of props which increased
the amusement of posing with friends.
A parent-sponsored After Prom party rounded out the special evening. Many
thanks to all those who made the After Prom party possible.
Prom attendees arrived home safely and were back in school Monday with fond
memories of their 2016 prom.
Mark your calendar for next year’s Prom Extravaganza, scheduled for April 22,
2017!
A new landscape garden in the football stadium
The Daniel football stadium has a new look - a landscape garden under the
scoreboard! In February, senior Maxwell
Jeffers organized a group of fellow Boy Scouts, including a number of other
DWD students, to install a garden under the scoreboard for his Eagle Scout
project in Troop 235.
The plants in this bed should be looking
good for the 2016 football season and for many years to come.
The Eagle Scout Court of Honor for
Maxwell and Davy Hiott will take place
May 23.
Thank you, Maxwell and Scouts for your
service to our school!

Daniel Relayers The Daniel Relayers will
represent our school at the Relay For Life
of Pickens County from 2:00 until 10:00 p.m.
on Saturday, April 30th. This team has raised
awareness and dollars
(about $3,000 prior to the Relay event, with more
donations expected) in the fight against cancer!
The Relayers wish to thank all those who have
supported our team! Special thanks to Steven
and Mary Jeffers!
Mr. Jeffers always arrives early and leaves last at
our Ace Hardware car wash. We would not be
able to do the car wash without him. They are
staunch supporters of Relay For Life and of our
team. Numerous people
donate their UnitedScrip percentages to the
Relayers and we are very grateful! Laura Henry and
Dana Howard are very generous to let the
Relayers have a
fundraiser at the Miss Summit pageant!
Special thanks go to our team sponsor
Connie Leverett and co-sponsor Terri Slattery!
Way to go, Daniel
Relayers! We appreciate
your hard work for this worthy cause!
All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

AP Environmental Science students learn about
the benefits of nuclear energy
AP Environmental Science (APES) students welcomed Jason Plumb from
Duke Energy in April. Mr. Plumb, a retired Navy nuclear technician, shared
the benefits of nuclear energy.
APES students learn throughout the year
the pros and cons to the environment that various energy sources pose. Daniel
High School appreciates Mr. Plumb and Duke Energy for adding to our
discussion.

Band Recognitions
From the Lions’ Den
We are very proud of many incredible
accomplishments made by the members of the DHS Band program this spring. On an
individual and ensemble level our students
have never shined so bright and performed at such a high level!
In January students from across the
county, region, and state competed for seats in honor bands at each level. To be
chosen to perform in these bands is a huge accomplishment that mirrors many hours
of dedicated practice and study of music
and their chosen instrument! It also takes immense courage to walk into a room of
strangers and perform under the pressure of critique, but the young musicians of the
Daniel Band outshone the competition. Please help me congratulate the following
members on their acceptance in the Pickens All-County, South Carolina All-
Region, and the most prestigious South
Carolina All-State Honor Band!

Concert Festival
This year we have two concert ensembles. They worked incredibly hard this semester
putting together a fantastic program for
our South Carolina State Performance Assessment on March 17th. Both
ensembles performed so artistically and with incredible expression that the judges
in critique were very complimentary of the mature performance level both ensembles
exhibited on stage and in sight-reading. Our ensemble’s performance earned a
SUPERIOR with distinction rating (straight
SUPERIOR ratings from each judge). This is the highest possible score that can be
earned from the South Carolina Band Director’s Association.
On top of that, our Wind Ensemble has
been invited by the SC Band Directors
Band students have busy, successful spring Nathan Whitworth, Director of Bands
Association to perform for the State
Concert Festival on May 7th at Irmo High School. We will perform alongside the best
16 band programs from across the state of
South Carolina. This is the first year this festival has ever taken place and we are
extremely honored and humbled to be asked to perform.
Jazz Band
The Jazz Band this spring has been in full swing. We were asked to perform at
several community events the last several
months. We had a great time performing for the Clemson Women’s Club, the
Clemson UMC Mardi Gras fundraiser, the SWU Jazz Festival, and the Clemson
Fellowship Club. The Jazz Band also performed for the student body before
spring break in honor of “Music in our Schools Month.”
Winter Guard
This winter and spring seasons were the
beginnings of the winter side of our Guard program. This season we were excited to
have two full winter guard ensembles competing in the circuit CIPA (Carolina
Indoor Performance Association). This circuit is an educational competitive
organization with contests throughout South Carolina, North Carolina, and
Tennessee. Huge congratulations go to the
Daniel JV Blue and Varsity Gold on their accomplishments this season!
