Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendanceat school is associated, on average, with higher studentachievement.
Additionally, attending school every day helps children to buildsocial and emotional skills such as communication, teamworkand resilience.
Why must I send my child to school?
Under Queensland law, you must make sure your child ofschool age is enrolled and attends school all day, every schoolday unless they have a reasonable excuse.
Illness, doing work experience, competing in a school sportingevent or going on a school excursion are reasonable excusesfor being absent from school.
Do I need to let the school know if my child has beenaway from school?
Yes, you must let the school know the reason why your child isabsent from school, if not beforehand, then within two schooldays of their return to school.
Avoid keeping your child away from school for:
Routine medical or other health appointments should bemade either before or after school or during the school
holidays. While it is a last resort, it is important to understand that
you may be prosecuted if your child is not attendingschool regularly.
What should I do if our family is going on a holiday inschool time?
You are encouraged not to schedule holidays during schooltime. If your family holiday is during school time, you mustinform the school in writing, stating the dates and reason whythe holiday must be taken in school time.
This is to be submitted to the Year Coordinator. Once approvedby the Principal, the student will need to request work or specialarrangements for assessment which will be missed, with theirHead of Departments.
What should I do if my child won’t go to school?
You should contact the school (Year Coordinator) as soon aspossible for advice and support.
• birthdays,
• shopping,
• visiting family and friends,
• if they sleep in,
• looking after other children,
• minor check-ups or
• care such as haircuts.

A set routine can help
Remember, school absenteeism and truancy can impactsignificantly on students' learning and wellbeing. A low levelof school attendance is associated with poor academicachievements, early school leaving, and leaving school withfewer qualifications, subsequent unemployment and a lowerlevel of health/life expectancy.
At GSHS 95% Attendance is required to be eligible to attendcelebrations/social skilling functions (page 20a in planner). 95%is 10 days off in a school year which equals 2 weeks away fromschool. Arriving late or leaving school for an appointment willalso impact on attendance percentages – every lesson counts. It is also important that all parents/guardians have viewed thispolicy and have signed the section at the bottom of the page.
As Johnathon Thurston says:Missing training could put you on the bench for your next
game.Missing school could put you on the bench for the rest of
your lifebecause every day counts.

CHAPPY CHATWelcome to Week 5 of Term 1! Both Jarekand I are enjoying our different groups. Theboys have now moved onto trust activitieswhich is pivotal in growing relationships inany situation. The activities are personallychallenging not only in trusting others butalso in trusting yourself to be able tocomplete what is required. Trustworthiness
is a necessary part of healthy relationships and is shown inactions – not just words. For a healthy relationship in anysituation, we need to recognise the other as deserving of trustor confidence, dependable and reliable. So whilst the boys hadloads of fun doing activities which involved personal risk-taking,the experiential learning and de-briefing really brings home theimportance of trust and trust-worthiness.
The Year 9 girls have now painted the floorboards of thewheelchairs with their background colours and are beginningto paint their individual designs or completing their designplanning. This week we were privileged to listen to PeteroCivoniceva who is a former Australian professional rugby leaguefootballer. He shared the message that each of us is worthy oftreating ourselves with respect, that everyone will go throughchallenging times and during those times, just “keep on going”.
Have an awesome fortnight and if you have any questionsor suggestions feel free to contact Yvonne atmailto:[email protected] (49766162) or Jarek [email protected] (49766165)

Stress in teenagers-or anyone else for thatmatter, is very common. It is the way ourbodies respond to emotions and challengesin life. Your brain and your body are closelyconnected and therefore, stress can affect you from your headto your toes. Some common symptoms of stress are; feelingnervous, anxiousness, tiredness, negative thoughts, notwanting to spend time with friends, disorganised, too much ornot enough sleep, not eating well, being aggressive or nottaking care in your appearance. You may feel sad, find it hard torelax, worry about what others think or say about you, becranky or moody, find it hard to focus or you may just feel likenothing is going right. Our bodies have two major stresshormones, that can help us to function at our best, but can alsocause lots of problems if there is too much released. Managingstress the right way can lead to more a more positive outlook onlife and help us meet challenges head on!
Some ways to deal with stress are:
• Move your body! Get out and get some exercise, trydoing it with a friend! Join a dance class; go runningwith your mates.
• Get enough sleep! Wind down time before bedshould be at least 40mins before you close youreyes, this means no TV, IPAD, Mobile phones or
