MY EXPERIENCE AT THE RADIO ASTRONOMY WINTER SCHOOL AND

PULSAR OBSERVATORY FOR STUDENTS PROGRAMME (POS-2013)

I got a great opportunity of attending the Radio Astronomy Winter School (RAWSC-

2013) which was conducted at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA-

TIFR) in Pune from Dec 17 -27,2013. About 28 students attended the school and we

were divided into six batches.

Using a 4-m radio telescope we did experiments on antennas, pointing offsets, beam

patterns, H1 line detection and in making small affordable radio telescopes. We also

did a team poster presentation on Cosmic rays and H1 line detection.

In those ten days I learnt a lot of things and I met many scientists. And it was for

the first time, that I got an opportunity to observe and do hands–on experiments

with a radio telescope.

After completing School, I got another rare opportunity to attend the Pulsar Obser-

vatory for Students Programme (POS-2013) which was conducted at the Radio As-

tronomy Centre in Ooty. I also have attended the lecture session which was con-

ducted during, July 9-12,2013. Now, I also have attended the observation slot from

Jan 3-6, 2014.

About 30 students participated and the experiments were done individually. I ob-

served a pulsar using the Ooty Radio Telescope and calculated its distance, time

period, flux density and modulation index. We had the great opportunity of present-

ing our analysis through video conference, to the Nobel Laureate Jocelyn Bell who

discovered pulsar stars. And I was overjoyed when she appreciated my presentation.

It was a lifetime experience which I will always treasure. I thank my parents, my

head of the department and my teachers for encouraging me and helping me. I

would also like to encourage my friends and classmates to attend such programmes.

GIS-BASED COMMUNITY LEARNING

Under the service learning programme, the department aimed at geo-locating feeder villages

for a government High school. A school was selected in Mayandipatti village at Melur dis-

trict. The school has upto X Std. As the first step, faculty members visited the school and col-

lected the students data from which 18 feeder villages were identified and extracted. 26 SF &

6 REG II year UG students enthusiastically registered to render their service for this work.

Among these villages, some of them were found to be small hamlets. These villages and ham-

lets were geo located using GPS. As an extension, a questionnaire was administered to find

the socio-economic status and the educational interests of the school children. The service learning students were given

training in survey techniques with help from the Social Science Department. Each student interviewed 150 school children

individually to elucidate their socio economic status. A geodatabase was created based on the data collected from the ques-

tionnaire. By incorporating the GPS points on Google earth the villages and the hamlets were identified and digitized. A

thematic map was generated to visualize the student distribution in the feeder hamlets.

Few interesting findings from the study are that most of the students have the reading habit, have a legible handwriting

and are aspiring for higher education in various fields like Engineering, teaching and medicine. 90% of students take food

from the noon meal scheme. The students come to school mostly by foot. The students coming from farther distances com-

mute by bus. The girl students are found to be more involved in domestic work at home. Their exposure outside their vil-

lage is nill. Only a few of them have travelled up to Madurai.

MOTIVATING SCHOOL CHILDREN TO LEARN PHYSICS

The service learning program on “ Motivating School Children to learn Physics” was

undertaken by a group of 2nd year UG students (Reg and SF) in the academic year

2013-2014. The educational needs of the students of Balamandhram Higher Secon-

dary school was identified through a few observational visits. The LDC students con-

tacted them twice a week regularly and helped them in understanding some basic

concepts and in solving simple problems. They also demonstrated some physics ex-

periments with their working models and helped the students to use simple

measuring instruments like screw gauge, vernier caliper, etc.

School students participated actively and benefited well. Our UG students

were monitored for their preparation and presentation by the faculty in-

charge. This exercise helped our students to share their knowledge they had

acquired.

REFLECTIONS OF II UG STUDENTS

The three days from December 16th to 18th were the most memorable days of

our lives. We the students of II UG didn’t know deeply about each other. Only

after the workshop conducted by the ‘Live Life Education’ team, we had the

opportunity to express ourselves and understand each other. We were taught

to thank those who were the reason for who we are. We realized the impor-

tance of team work and were made to realize our responsibilities. We shed

tears of happiness which expressed our love for our parents, teachers and

friends. Through laughter therapy, we laughed a lot and enjoyed thoroughly

for the first time in our lives. We discovered our ‘limiting beliefs’ and prepared

‘turn out statements’ to overcome them. Now, we believe, we have been

moulded into responsible students with individuality and a sense of team

spirit.

Priceless treasures

I have learnt lots of good qualities from this college. Self-discipline,Self-

confidence, Team work, Self-study, How to approach a problem and how

to adapt myself to the situation. I’ m able to relate all the subjects with

physics. It gives me confidence that I can even enter into an IT field and

shine in that field too. Now I ‘m able to think positively and these will be

useful when I enter into my higher studies as well as job.

TO MY TEACHERS

Physics is the study of nature

You made our nature to study physics;

You are the force ,

that changes the state of rest,

Gravity that pulls us towards learning;

Resistor for our laziness;

Amplifier for our talents;

Generator of future scientists;

Interference of love and knowledge;

Filter to block undesired character;

And you are the array of good habits.

A MOMENT WHEN A STUDENT IS

HAPPY ABOUT HER TEACHER

When she knows my small name ,

A smile for the words of my greeting,

Her hands on my shoulder while advising,

Knowing my problem by seeing my face,

And big appreciation for my small success,

These are not just a word for my verse,

These are the moments I experienced,

With you mam.

Thank You!
