He laughed over the two words we were confusing, and clarified for us that buonissima is used for something you’re eating, whereas bellissima is used for something you’re looking at. “Incredibly delicious” versus “stunningly beautiful.” If you were fortunate enough to join us in the clubhouse last month for Ken and Susan Olsen’s Rustic Italian Dinner I think you’ll agree with me that, in this case, both words were appropriate. The clubhouse looked spectacular with streamers of sparkling white lights and long tables covered in crisp white linens, decorated with flowers and bottles of wine and olive oil. The waitstaff was decked out in black and white, Italian-themed dinner music filled the air, and a slideshow of scenes from the Italian countryside played in the background as glasses of Prosecco and trays of appetizers were served. Gere-a-Deli catered a delicious feast of chicken marsala, pasta, and roasted vegetables, which the SBYC waitstaff plated and brought to the tables so quickly that everybody dined simultaneously. It was truly a perfect evening. Bellissima and buonissima, all at once. In addition to thanking hosts Ken and Susan for planning such a wonderful event, here’s a huge thank you to their crew of Dottie and Mike Price, Anne and Rob Hays, Randi and Dale Freidig, Patty and Ray Mueller, Ashley Sweeney and Michael Barclay, Kim and Mike Kusilek, Carole and Sonny Miller, and Debbie Galbraith. These fine folks hustled like crazy throughout the evening to keep everyone’s glasses and plates filled and to help complete Susan and Ken’s vision of a classic Italian feast. We also conducted our annual election of officers at the October dinner per our club’s By-Laws. It is with great pleasure that I present to you our 2020 Board of Directors: Ken Olsen, Commodore Don Chandler, Trustee Gail Romero, Rear Commodore Jennifer Johnston, Trustee Dennis Largé, Treasurer Larry Lien, Trustee Sherry Granner, Secretary Jon Galbraith, Staff Commodore Congratulations to our new board members, as well as to those of you who are continuing to serve next year, and a huge thank you to outgoing officers Dave Latimer, Susi Holleman, and Clark Scarboro. As you may notice, we currently have vacancies in the positions of Vice Commodore and Fleet Captain. We anticipate making announcements regarding those two positions in the forthcoming weeks. Looking ahead, we have finalized our club’s schedule of events for 2020, which we’ve published on page 4. Get out your pens and calendars because you won’t want to miss a thing. And 2019 isn’t done yet, either. Our next event “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” hosted by Dave and Mari Latimer, is on Saturday, November 16. The format of this dinner promises to be great fun. Registrations have closed; if you somehow missed out and didn’t sign up, contact Dave at [email protected] or (541) 350-8928. And, if you are already registered, Dave and Mari will be in touch with you shortly with more details. Right on the heels of the November dinner, online registration for this year’s Commodore’s Ball will open at 5:00 PM on Sunday, November 17. This popular dinner always sells out quickly so don’t hesitate to sign up. I have it on good authority that the crew is planning quite an event. See the flyer on page 5 for details. One final thought this month. As the days get cooler and darker, the docks in our marina and the swim steps on our boats are getting slippery. When you’re heading down to check on your boat this fall and winter, please watch your step and pay attention to what you’re doing. Remember that there are probably aren’t many people nearby to lend a hand if you get yourself into a jam, so let’s just all play it safe out there. Thank you! One evening years ago, as Debbie and I were exploring Italy, we struggled

with our rudimentary Italian while attempting to compliment our waiter

on a delicious meal. He laughed over the two words we were confusing, and clarified for us that buonissima is used for something you’re eating,

whereas bellissima is used for something you’re looking at. “Incredibly

delicious” versus “stunningly beautiful.” If you were fortunate enough to

join us in the clubhouse last month for Ken and Susan Olsen’s Rustic

We also conducted our annual election of officers at the October dinner per our club’s

Vice Commodore—Ken Olsen

I’d like to thank everyone who attended our October dinner and cast votes at the annual Business Meeting. You unanimously approved a couple of important housekeeping items in

our By-Laws and some outstanding nominees to our Board of Directors, and also approved the

advancement of several current board members onward into 2020. I'd like to offer a big thank

you to our outgoing Secretary Susi Holleman, Fleet Captain Dave Latimer, and Trustee Clark

Scarboro. It has been a pleasure serving with you all and I appreciate all your support during the past year.

It must be reported that our Rear Commodore, Laurie Wishkoski, has asked to be relieved of Club duties as

she deals with a serious health issue. Laurie has been extremely active in the community, not only with the

Yacht Club, but also on the Community Board of Directors, and all the committee assignments that entails.

She now needs to reduce her community obligations to focus on a wellness program. We wish her a speedy recovery. During her vacancy, we will be seeking a Vice Commodore for the 2020 year and will hold the

opportunity for Laurie to step back in if she wishes.

Now that our annual election is behind us, we will also be working to fill our club’s many appointed positions

for next year. I’m hoping that those of you who are currently volunteering for one of these positions will say

“Yes!” when I call to confirm your participation for another year. Currently I know of four openings: Club

Medic, Summer BBQ Coordinator, Photographer, and Training Coordinator. Please contact me if you are

interested.

Finally, and importantly, watch your mailbox for your 2020 dues statements, coming later this month. As

always, your statement will include a copy of your contact information for your review. That information

determines, among other things, how your entry in the 2020 Member Directory will appear, so please take a close look at your address, phone numbers, emails, boat information, etc., and let us know if anything needs

to be corrected or updated.

New Member Coordinator—Linda Olsson

It was a dark and stormy night...

But, the new Member Reception was warm and bright! Thank you to all who braved the

weather to enjoy an opportunity to meet up and learn what makes SBYC so special. We are all blessed to live in this beautiful community, and have the many opportunities and activities to

volunteer where we can share a little of our time, and reap such great rewards in friendships,

laughter, and wonderful memories.

Also, a big, big thank you to Elizabeth Scott for sharing her gracious home.

And, please welcome new members: Dave Mills and Cate Schultz, along with Michael and Cynthia

Shannon. We look forward to meeting you in the very near future.

Cheers, Linda Olsson

From the Charthouse—Fleet Captain, Dave Latimer

Ahoy Mates,

Reflecting on the 2019 cruising season, we had some great cruises that were extremely well

attended, perhaps setting some records for the club! Our port hosts and their teams did an

outstanding job across the board, and their efforts are very much appreciated.

Here is an update on our 2020 cruising plans:

Shakedown Cruise – Anacortes – April 17-19 (2 nights).

Roche Harbor Cruise – June 7-10 (3 nights).

Commodore’s Cruise – Gulf Islands – July 8-17 (9 nights)

Sucia Island End-of-Season Cruise – September 9-11 (2 nights)

We’ve had a couple of changes in the Commodore’s Cruise due to a scheduling conflict with another club at

one of the ports. So, here is the revised detail. Dates listed are the nights we will be at each port.

July 8-9 – Port Browning

July 10-11 – Ganges July 12-14 – Telegraph Harbor

July 15 – Maple Bay

July 16 – Roche Harbor

We will also offer a northbound option, for those cruisers planning to head north after the cruise. Those

cruisers would head to Silva Bay on Gabriola Island, just outside of Gabriola Passage, after Telegraph

Harbor for a two-night stay July 15-16.

Also, we will plan an informal gathering at Prevost Harbor on Stuart Island on July 7, anchoring out, grabbing a mooring buoy, or commandeering the dock! This stop will be unhosted but will be a nice way to

kick off the cruise and place us very close to our first stop at Port Browning. Note that if you have Nexus,

you can check in directly at Port Browning, skipping a stop at Bedwell Harbor.

Lastly, I wanted to thank the club and all its members for the opportunity to serve as your Fleet Captain in 2019. I encourage any cruiser, particularly newer members, to consider volunteering for this job in the

future. It takes some effort, but it is quite rewarding to work with the port hosts to make our cruises fun

and memorable.

Safe cruising, Dave

2019 Lighted Christmas Boat Parade

We’ve been invited again this year to participate in Swinomish Yacht

Club’s annual Lighted Christmas Boat Parade, Saturday evening,

December 7. The parade will begin at 6:00 PM. Larry Lien has

graciously volunteered to be SBYC’s parade coordinator again this

year. Any SBYC boaters who would like to participate should get in touch with Larry at [email protected] or (360) 631-1880.

Upcoming SBYC Training

Please join us on Monday, November 4 in the clubhouse at 6:30 PM for a presentation by Wayne Gilham,

past president (and current vice president) of the Recreational Boating Association of Washington (RBAW).

Wayne will update us on RBAW’s recent accomplishments and upcoming initiatives. Many thanks go to

Richard Wisniewski who arranged for Wayne to join us.

Remember that our club still needs a Training Coordinator. The Training Coordinator is an official club

position that’s appointed by the Commodore; this person makes arrangements for a presenter to host a 1-2

hour educational session, monthly during October through April, on topics usually (but not necessarily) related to boating and other marine-related activities. We have many great suggestions for topics but need

someone to follow through with the details. If you’re interested, please contact Ken Olsen at

[email protected] or (425) 890-9415 for more information.

SBYC RECIPROCAL PROGRAM

We’ll continue to refine and improve our reciprocal program during the fall and winter as we look towards

next summer’s cruising season. You can help by offering the use of your slip while your boat is away. You

will be reimbursed $15 for each night your slip is occupied by a guest’s boat. Only slips on the lettered

docks (A-J) in the Shelter Bay marina may participate (slips on private docks are not eligible).

We know that SBYC’s continued ability to offer reciprocal moorage benefits is extremely important to many

of you. Your active participation in helping ensure we have slips to offer our guests is critical for this

benefit to continue. Please contact Jon Galbraith at (360) 630-5404 or [email protected] if you

would like more information.
