For our Year 10’s and Year 11’s we are into the final 12 weeks or so of the teaching year and so there is the need to be focussing on the completion of the compulsory SACE subjects and ensuring the best foundation for their continuing studies in 2018. A key decision making term for all of our senior secondary students. Other key events include; class photos, NASSSA debating; SA Schools Volleyball Cup; Wakakirri performance; Book Week Parade; Multicultural Week and our R-12 Wellbeing and Kindness Day Expo. There will be a student free day on Friday 31 August and school closure day on Monday 3 September, so get those dates in your calendar. STAFFING UPDATE Usually at this time of the year staffing is reasonably stable, with only some minor changes to account for staff who have approved leave or who have joined us this term. Peter Groves the Deputy Principal is on Long Service Leave this term and David Kinna will be in the Deputy’s role for term 3. David Blackmore will be the Senior Leader Learning Improvement and will have responsibility for the oversight of Year 9 for term 3. Anne Gauci will be the coordinator for Year 7 to 12 Special Education for term 3. Paul Kuhr our FLO manager is on LSL for term 3 and An Ngo will be the FLO Manager for this term. We are also welcoming back Kate Reid who has won the Senior Leader position of Student Intervention and Support in the R-6 school. In addition to these leadership changes we are also welcoming the following new/returning staff to the school; Brooke Faulds (7-12 English/HASS); Lydia Puleski (7-12 Special Education); Don Grinsted (7-12 Design and Technology); Kim Nguyen (7-12 Maths and Science) and Desi Philippou (Home Economics). BUILDING WORKS UPDATE The first of our dedicated STEM learning spaces under the STEM Works initiative is nearly completed. This specialised space for R-6 STEM teaching should be fully functional sometime in the next couple of weeks. Classes have already moved back into the first floor of this building and we are just waiting for the finishing touches to be applied to the ground floor before we are able to move in. I know teachers and students alike are excited about the prospects of this space will be able to deliver and I expect we will providing regular articles about the innovative learning being generated from this facility. Work has started on the second of our STEM Works learning spaces which will cater for the secondary learners. We are expecting this space to be completed in preparation for the beginning of the 2019 school year. Last year we were also notified we were to receive approximately 12 million dollars under the Building Better Schools initiative to remove transportable buildings and create dedicated learning facilities for junior primary, student health and wellbeing and the performing arts. I have received a letter from the new Education Minister indicating the funding will still be available but the timing of when various sites will be upgraded has changed. Secondary schools requiring additional facilities to accommodate the inclusion of Year 7 into secondary will be the highest priority. READING FOCUS

You may recall that back in term one I explained that our singleimprovement priority moving forward would be to developParalowie students as strong, balanced and competentreaders. As it turns out this aligns perfectly with one of theDepartment for Education key strategic priorities, improvementin student reading scores across public sector schools.

We are taking it steady as we support staff from R-10 tobecome confident and competent teachers of reading. Wehave invested in specific professional learning for teachers andin specialised resources to support teachers in their work withstudents. As a school we are really looking forward to watchingthe growth in our student’s reading scores and theimprovement in learning that happens across all learning areasas student’s reading comprehension abilities increase. I amsure our reading improvement team will be keen to share theirsuccess stories in coming editions of our newsletter. Animportant component of reading improvement is studentsreading at home and I ask that you join us in this important workby supporting and encouraging your child to read at home.

YEAR 5/6 STUDENTS DO WELL IN CODINGCOMPETITION

Last term I had the privilege of taking the following students tothe DXC Technology facility at Felixstow:

Michael Franklin (Year 5, Danni Robbin’s class)

Kirsten Kartuz (Year 5, Danni Robbin’s class)

Damien Ward (Year 6, Sarah Delroy’s class)

Ella Sergi (Year 5, Shannon McKay’s class)

Daniella Sissis (Year 5, Shannon Mckay’s class)

The students were invited to go the facility as they had enteredthe global DXC Coding competition and the event organisers, along with DEC, wanted to recognise the achievements of thestudents who submitted a Scratch video game.

The students had to present their video games to industryexperts, employees, other students and department

representatives. The students then had the opportunity to goon to tour the facilities and they even got security clearance toenter the server rooms which was a massive deal.

The students did such an amazing job representing our schooland should be proud of their efforts. They got some incrediblefeedback and their minds were blown when they wereinformed that both Paralowie teams made it into the top 10across Australia.

Huge congratulations to the above students on your efforts andachievements!

I’m hoping that they can present at a future staff meeting andassembly.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ROUND UP

MAKE IT BREAK IT AGAIN!

This lunch time activity is proving very popular amongs ourstudents, as soon as I put out an old toaster, printer, set topbox or dvd player it is pulled apart, checked out and finallysorted into recycling boxes, then I am hounded for somethingelse to pull apart.

The students are loving this lunch activity and I need moredonations. The really exciting things to deconstruct are:

DVD / VCRsPrintersLaminatorsOld cameras – very popularCoffee makersTape recorder stereos.

This activity can only continue with donations from staff andfamilies. If you have any items sitting around that you no longerwant or need, can you bring them into the front office at school.

Enjoy these photos of the club in action.

TERM 2 GRADES AND DATA

Students have been provided with their Term 2 report andI hope that this important document provided discussion athome about strengths and weaknesses and areas forimprovement. We looked at the Grade Point Average (GPA)which is a number from 0 to 5 that is a summary of their A-Egrades.

Six Home Groups improved their GPA score as a whole classfrom Term 1 to Term 2 which was very pleasing. We haveprovided data to all Middle School students to help improvetheir grades, skills and abilities.

4

Students for example use Lexile data to help improve theirreading and fluency. This process engages our students byseeing growth in their literacy and supports them in choosingreading books and texts. The data also informs teachers whenselecting texts and tasks for students to complete.

COMMUNICATION

It cannot be understated that communication between homeand school is vital. Please inform the school by phone or notein the diary of appointments or reasons for full or part daysabsences.

All Home Group teachers and subject teachers are required tokeep accurate rolls and follow up for attendance. More than3 days absence from school due to illness requires a medicalcertificate. This process is reflected in the workplace and weask that you treat illness from school seriously.

Please do not contact your child during lesson time. Phonesneed to be switched off during learning and this can be verydisruptive when the class is focusing on learning. If you need tocontact your child, please call the school number on 81827222.

If your address, phone numbers, emergency contactdetails or even medical conditions for students havechanged, it is vital that the school be notified.

MOBILE PHONES AND ONLINE SAFETY

We are dealing with matters sometimes on a daily basis thatinvolve issues related to online behaviour happening outside ofschool time and then issues presenting themselves at school.

As you can imagine, as a school, we are unable to controlonline behaviour that happens outside of school hours.Recently, the issue of ‘group chats on Snapchat’ has beenflagged as an unsafe environment. We ask that all parentsand caregivers monitor online activity and the content of socialmedia interactions. We do not want to deal with conflict atschool that is a direct result of online bullying and / orinappropriate behaviour. Please speak with your child’s yearlevel manager if you have concerns.

SUBJECT SELECTION

Middle School students are currently working on their subjectselection process for next year. All students in Years 7, 8 and9 will be presenting a portfolio of work and activity that reflectstheir work output so far this year as well as subject selectionprocess and outcomes. Please take an interest and review theCurriculum Guide that your child is currently accessing.

STAGE 2 TOURISM VISITS MONARTO ZOOParalowie’s Year 12 Tourism students ventured to the MonartoZoological Park to partake in a guided tour to learn more abouttourism in South Australia.

Students were taken on a guided tour with Kevin, anexperienced tour guide at the Monarto Zoo. The tour of thepark allowed students the opportunity to learn more about thetourism aspects associated with the park, while also beingable to get a close up view of some of the world’s mostbeautiful animals, such as giraffes, cheetahs, rhinos, zebra, hyenas, antelope, lions and many more. Some of these closeencounters had the students literally out of their seats to have aclose up experience with these rare animals.

Students asked questions about the zoos efforts in improvingconditions for animals, poaching, sustainable practices andgeneral management strategies of the site. The students willnow write a report outlining the zoo’s sustainability andmanagement practices to project them into the future.

A great day was had by all staff and students involved! Studentsnow have a better understanding of how tourism operateswithin South Australia and employment opportunities availableto them in the future.

SA VOLLEYBALL SCHOOLS CUPCHAMPIONS

During the weekend of August 3rd to 5th, our Volleyball squadrepresented the school in a three-day state competition.

This event his held each year and is the first competitive gameour teams participate in during our lead up to the Melbourne tripat the end of the year. This year we nominated four teams intothe competition; Year 12 boys, Year 10 girls, Year 9 girls andYear 8 boys.

Our shining stars for the weekend, were the Year 9 girls. Intheir second year of competitive volleyball, this team absolutelydominated their division finishing the round robin stageundefeated, dropping just 1 set in their first game. They

continued to build the momentum and on the Sunday night, were victorious over St Peters in their Gold medal matchwinning that game 2-0.

For the Year 8 boys, this was their first competitive tournamentof volleyball. The boys dominated their pool round butunfortunately, lost to Brighton on countback by just one pointon Saturday night. This eliminated them from the top 4 playoff. The boys displayed high skill development across the weekendand should be very proud of the way they performed andgrew as a team. The boys finished 5th place – a fantasticachievement.

Both of our senior teams in the Year 12 boys and Year 10girls continued to demonstrate great sportsmanship, grit anddetermination across all games over the weekend. Both ofthese teams were faced with losses but managed to stay withthe fight and finish the weekend on a high, bringing home asilver medal – both in division 1.

Without the time dedicated to the program from staff andvolunteers, these successes would not be made possible to ourstudents. Thank you to Justine Higginson, Louis Sharrad, KellyBarltrop, Aaron Slater, Derek Slater, Brianna Farmer, BreannaSlater, Josh Russo and Daphne Albanese for the time and effortthey contributed over the weekend.

On behalf of all coaches and volunteers, we extend a hugecongratulations to all students on the success they experiencedin this competition. We all look forward to our next big event, being the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in Melbourne(December 9th-14th).
