Remembered:Selected Works Honoring Special People
A new exhibition featuring artwork selected over the past 39 seasons from the annual Elkhart Juried Region-al opens on Friday, July 20. The exhibition will show-case all of the Memorial Purchase Awards selected by past Jurors, Museum Staff, and, in some cases, by the Patrons who have sponsored the award in memory of a special person. All media will be represented including both painting and sculpture. The most works acquired (14 to date) represent Memorial Purchases for Pho-tography to honor the late Elkhart photographer/artist Mary Feddersen. Many of the artists represented will be familiar names to museum members.

This will be an exciting look back at this major American Artist’s relationship with patrons of the Windy City. Three other exhibitions are concurrent including Flesh: Ivan Albright at the Art Institute of Chicago, Charles White: A Retrospective & Helen Frankenthaler Prints: The Romance of a New Medium.

Gateway Mile PassportThe Midwest Museum of American Art along with four other Elkhart museums will offer a special “cultural passport” to the public. The passport will allow people to sample up to ten special events and or exhibits for $80. This is a value of $222. In this way all of the participating museums hope to encourage more local tourism with an emphasis on art, history, nature, and science.

July 5 Film: The Hairy Who Part IJuly 12 Film: The Hairy Who Part IIJuly 19 Film: The Hairy Who Part III Director & Curator, Brian Byrn, introduces the topic of a group of artists known collectively as the Chicago Imagists. Using archival footage and interviews with artists, collectors, and curators, this series will bring into focus the weird, wondrous, and in-your-face approach taken by The Hairy Who. July 26 Talk: Remembered Director & Curator, Brian Byrn, discusses the artwork that has been collected as Memorial Purchase Awards in the past 39 years from various Elkhart Juried Regional exhibitions. In certain cases, museum staff were able to procure a second or third work by major award winners including past Best of Show recipients.
AUG 2 Talk: American Modernism Part IAUG 9 Talk: American Modernism Part II Brian Byrn illustrates the lives of some of the artists who are represented in the current spotlight exhibition. Byrn focuses on the formal elements and the language that Modernists used to create various forms of abstractions in their responses to the world. AUG 16 Film: David Smith, Sculptor This film presents the life and work of America’s great-est Abstract Expressionist sculptor who was born in Decatur, Indiana. Before Smith left for New York City he worked in the Studebaker factory honing his talents as a welder (28 mins).
AUG 23 Talk: The Golden Age of Illustration Brian Byrn delivers a conversation about some of the important names of the Golden Age of American Illustration, from 1890 to 1930.
AUG 30 Talk: Allen Stewart, Director Hall of Heroes Allen Stewart is the Founder of the Elkhart Comic Con that hosted over 10,000 people last year. The museum is a repository for some of the famous costumes, movie props, and of course, comic books, of the genre.
SEP 6 Talk: John E. Thompson, IUSB- Graphic Design Adjunct Lecturer in Graphic Design, Thompson shares his experiences with graphic novels and his enthusiasm for the comic book industry.
SEP 13 Film: Roy Lichtenstein This important POP artist is revealed in historic inter-views highlighting his career from the 1960s to the 1970s (25 mins).
