Vale Dave Hughes On the 6th July 1994, a small progressive Shopfitting company on the outskirts of Melbourne ( Bayswater was on the outskirts then.... ) Concept Shopfitters purchased their first licence of Cabnetworks.

The owner operator of the business Mr David Hughes, a 32year old go getter could immediately see the benefits of automating his operation and subsequently did so.

We lost Dave Hughes on Sunday 7th March to a sudden heart attack. He was 47.

Many of you may have had contact with Dave over the years. His irascible nature, his willingness to help anyone and his skill as a forward thinker enabled Dave to spread the gospel of automation.

He combined his company with Gary Danby to create Danby Concept Consolidated in Surrey Hills and bought the very first Nested Based Manufacturing system in late 2004-2005.

He was a legend and became one of the very few software Beta testers outside of the US. Planit US programmers always liked to run ideas past Dave.

You always got a very straight answer wether you liked it or not.

Over the years Dave opened the doors of Danby Concept innumerable times to fellow woodworkers, “there are no secrets” he was fond of saying. He allowed competitors, acquaintances literally anybody who was interested inside for a sticky beak at his imminently elegant yet simple setup. Those of you who have experienced a “Turnkey” implementation, know that we can spend several weeks onsite and in training to make it work.

When Dave took delivery of his first Flatbed, ( Danby Concept Consolidated now own 2 huge machines) our integrator was told to go after 2 days. Dave was miles in front of the game.

We’ve lost a great friend, a great advocate for the industry, a tireless worker in the Victorian Cabinetmakers Associated and a fair dinkum aussie good bloke.

To his wife Suzy and young son Nick we extend our condolences.

Vale Dave Hughes,

A life cut short but well lived.

Kitchen, bathroom makeovers to rise 25% (an article from Nine MSN)

In December 09, Nine MSN posted the following article which we thought our customers may find to be an interesting read: Australians it seems want everything, including the kitchen sink. The demand for bigger kitchens and bathrooms is highlighted by a new report predicting the value of installations and renovations to rise by 25 per cent to a record $12 billion by 2012.The Housing Industry Association (HIA) Kitchens and Bathrooms Report for 2009/10 highlights the amount of money Australians spend each year on adding to their home. The report predicts the value of kitchen installations will rise to almost $6 billion in 2009/10 and almost $7 billion by 2011/12. “Despite evidence to suggest that detached houses in Australia may be gradually declining in size, there has been a clear trend towards larger kitchens in Australia for some time now,” HIA chief economist Dr Harley Dale said in a statement. “The intense competition amongst kitchen installers is likely to see the trend towards better quality kitchens continue for the foreseeable future,” Dr Dale said. The report found the previous financial year was a tough one, with the kitchen industry’s value falling 5.1 per cent to $5.6 billion. The bathroom industry also suffered last financial year. The report found it had contracted by six per cent to $3.9 billion in 2008/09.

“Fortunately, the worst appears over and 2009/10 is expected to feature a lift in housing starts as well as overall renovations activity, which is good news for bathroom installations,” Dr Dale said.

Improving our Level of Service

Planit has been reviewing the Customer Care service we offer, to see how we can continue to improve this service. One of the areas we have been concentrating on is the return call time in Customer Care. Before we can minimise the time taken to return a call, we must first breakdown ‘What is Telephone Support?” If we start looking at the types of calls our Telephone Support Staff take, plus analyse the times for each of these calls we come up with the following findings:

* Customer’s regularly call in with more than one support question and at times have a long list of questions.

* Customer’s log a call as soon as they come across a question/query verses using the available

resources they have in E Support Forum & Help Files to see if they can find the answer themselves.

* Customer’s would call the Customer Care line when they wanted to learn how to use new feature/

section of the software

* Customer’s call the Customer Care line when they require training but can’t put aside a full day to

learn the required functionality.

As an ongoing process of improvement both for our customer’s and for our Customer Care Service, the above challenges can be overcome. How can you assist us in this process?

* Check the help file prior to calling & or check E Support forum for the answer, both the help file & E Support Forum are always being updated and contain a wealth of information on the program. Become a “super user” and solve the basic questions yourself, saving the hard ones for the Planit Customer Care staff.

Page 6: From the Editor E Newsletter · Kitchen, bathroom makeovers to rise 25% (an article from Nine MSN) In December 09, Nine MSN posted the following article which we thought our customers

* Don’t wait until you have a list of questions or problems, this will only make the call longer. If every

customer calls in with a list of questions, the call times go from under 5 minutes per call to over 1 hour per call (on average). As you can imagine this flows onto the next customer and so forth. Call when you come across the problem/ question.

* If you need training there are a few different options to choose from. Classroom/Onsite and a new

option Online. You may find you don’t require ‘face to face’ training, then online training is an ideal cost & time effective option.

* You may also find the training you require will not fill an entire day, so with online training you

can purchase ‘1 hour training blocks’ (minimum amount you can purchase is 1 hour and we recommend a maximum of 2 hours at any one time.

PAC man theory, bite away at your training on a regular basis.

Let’s clarify the difference between support & training. SupportIf you are in a job and are experiencing a particular problem. Some examples of this are:I imported a texture & rather than it being stretch and distorted I need it in a smaller size…..I have setup a new drawer system and need to increase the depth of the holes for the drawer runners…… You can see how in both of these support topics the user knows how to use a particular function/feature but requires help in tweaking the feature for the desired result. TrainingIf there is a feature or function in the program you do not know how to setup/ use. Let’s use the same example’s as above but asked by a customer who requires training: How/where do you import new textures into the program? How/where do you add & setup new hardware for drawer runners? Customer Care telephone support is there to help you get your system back on track. If we all work together, Customer Care telephone support will be more effective when you really need it.

Small Steps a Winner

The team at waPlanit have always advocated that their software is best implemented in stages. Cabinet makers that introduce Cabinet Vision into their operation before purchasing a machine will enjoy immediate benefits and a seamless integration to a CNC when they take the next step.

Two newcomers to the world of CNC are happy to share their experience:-

Frank Trichilo from Crown Cabinets and Design in Balcatta said “I had to wait three months for the delivery of my new CNC and I used that time to become completely familiar with the Cabinet Vision software. By the time the machine arrived all our jobs were being processed through Cabinet Vision and we were preparing drawings, cutting lists and panel optimising reports for our panel saw. The machine integration was a breeze. I already knew how to use Cabinet Vision and it was only a few more clicks to get the jobs down to the new CNC machine. I would definitely recommend this approach”.

Luke Henderson and Clint Hutchinson from Salter Cabinets in Jandakot agreed that “the investment in Cabinet Vision was providing a significant return on their investment much sooner than they had anticipated.” Originally, they thought that it would be a couple of years before they jumped into a CNC machine. After seeing how much the Cabinet Vision had improved their throughput, the decision to take the next step sooner rather later was obvious. Now their CNC is all up and running and their productivity improvements have exceeded all expectations.

With the release of Planit’s Cabinet Vision Version 5, you can now to enter at four different levels. All levels provide design and cut list functionality starting at $3,950

Joinery company upgrades software to improve business

Top-shelf cabinet making software from Planit has helped Practical Furniture of Emu Plains to double its business turnover, while simplifying and smoothing the production process. The western Sydney commercial joinery company upgraded from existing software to Planit’s Cabinet Vision, choosing the Solid Ultimate module, which managing director Tom Belinski calls the “Ferrari of software”. “The upgrade has made work easier, simpler and faster,” he said. “Speed is the biggest advantage. It’s easier to develop drawings, the software is much more user-friendly, and the operators can do things very quickly because of the software’s special functionality. “For example, when making holes for shelves, we previously had to work it out for ourselves. Now the software does these things for you.” Two operators at Practical Furniture were trained in late 2009, with a third now undergoing the course. Initial training takes three to five days. “If I hadn’t moved to the new software, there’s no way we could handle the amount of business we do. It’s helped us to double our turnover,” Tom said.

Practical Furniture production manager Matthew Stivicic said Planit’s Cabinet Vision had improved the work flow

“Of course, I’ve had to employ more people on the floor to assemble the cabinetry, but that’s a positive, because we can design so quickly now.

“Cabinet Vision makes life so much easier. The operators absolutely love it. It was more expensive initially, but I’ve no doubt the upgrade will pay for itself. “We wouldn’t go back to the old software. That would be like going back to the Dark Ages. I would definitely recommend the software to other companies like ours,” he said. Practical Furniture production manger Matthew Stivicic said Cabinet Vision had improved the work flow in two ways. “First, it means a lot more work going to the router – an estimated 25-plus per cent more. “Second, in jobs that require workshop drawings to be emailed to architects for approval, we can send them in Cabinet Vision, which are then easily converted at a later stage to workshop drawings for cutting. “Another big advantage of Cabinet Vision is that if you have to make changes to a job, for example to the board thickness, these changes don’t cause problems – unlike the previous software, where we would have to redraw the job. “As well, you can see all the operations in Cabinet Vision. For example, if hinges are going to clash with shelving, you can see that. You don’t have to wait until you discover the problem on the workshop floor.” The software upgrade was “not as hard as I thought it would be, although it meant changing some habits” Matthew said. Cabinet Vision Solid Ultimate software has advanced capabilities that allow cabinet makers and joiners to take full advantage of solid modelling technology. Solid Ultimate automatically generates shop drawings, 3D customer renderings, cutting lists, material requirements and estimating. It enables manufacturers to fully automate and integrate their design-to-manufacturing processes, saving time, eliminating costly mistakes and increasing productivity. The program is essential for businesses wanting to automate their operations with CNC machines.

Big improvement since upgrading woodworking software and adding flatbed router

Timpelle Kitchens has enjoyed a “hundred per cent improvement” since upgrading Planit’s software and purchasing a second Biesse flatbed router.

Like any company, Timpelle had established production systems in place that seemed like a big hurdle to change. “But I’m glad we faced up to it. We can now do a lot more. I can’t believe we didn’t do this years ago!” said managing director Joe Timpano. Timpelle Kitchens is running both

flatbed routers and a new Boomerang edgebander with just two workers. Production capacity is up 30 per cent or more, he estimated. The well-established company based in Sydney’s southwest produces about 25 kitchens and other joinery per week for private buyers, building and construction companies. Its product range includes new and remodelled kitchens, vanities, laundry cabinetry, television and entertainment units, and custom designed furniture. Mr Timpano said Timpelle Kitchens had been using Planit software “since the early days” 10 or 15 years ago, so it wasn’t really difficult to get up to speed in the latest upgrade. One of the company’s operators had worked at Planit and was utilising the software’s design capability, which initially drove a beam saw. The remainder of the operators were still designing by hand. “Now we’re all designing on CabnetWare and sending the drawings straight to the routers,” Mr Timpano said.

“It’s made our work a lot easier – I would say a 100 per cent improvement.”

Insuring Planit Licenses

OAMPS Insurance Brokers was formed in 1976 and was originally Oil Agents Mutual Provident Society. Tips & Tricks

Cabinet Vision Tips & Tricks

How to modify dimension line spacingTo move all the dimension lines closer together follow these steps. 1. Right click in background2. Select Properties3. Select the Layers tab4. Click on the word Dimensions5. Click Edit6. Change Horizontal Line Offset, Horizontal Line Increment, Vertical Line Offset and Vertical Line Increment to

your desired amount. In this example I am changing all these settings to 150mm.7. Click ok when you have made your changes8. Click ok again to complete the change

You will now notice the dimensions have changed. You will need to do make this same change for each layer you have created (eg: Standard, Shop, ect).

Automatic Backup Procedure1. When you start a new job and save it for the first time, Solid creates a file with the name you gave it and a

“.cvj” extension. This file extension is what Solid uses to recognize this file and open it.

2. When you close that job, reopen it and save again, Solid then creates a backup of that file with the name of the job plus a “.bak” extension (within the same folder).

Example: SmithKitchen.cvj SmithKitchen.bak

3. In the event the original job file becomes corrupted, you can change the “.bak” extension to “.cvj” and Solid will open it (provided the “.bak” does not contain the same corrupted content as the original file). It will contain the updates that were made up until the time you last saved it. You will also have to change the first part of the file name because two “.cvj” files can’t have the same name.

4. Solid also creates an “.asv” file which is also a copy of the original job. In the event Solid closes abnormally, you are given the opportunity to continue using this file when you reopen Solid. If you don’t get the prompt to continue using it, this file can also be renamed to “.cvj” and opened by Solid (if there was time for the system to properly save it). The time frame between updates to this file is determined by the Auto-Save setting in the Preferences screen. (Note: this function does not affect the content of the “.bak” file).

So, Solid makes two different attempts to save your work. Of course, the best safety measure to take is to make a habit of saving your files often.

Assigning Textures to MaterialsDo you ever find the need to have two or more distinct textures or colors on different cabinets in a room design? Here is a method to accomplish it. It involves assigning Textures to the materials you use on the cabinet Exteriors.

1) Start by editing the Materials. Go to File Setup Materials. Select the desired material and then Edit. Click on the Panel Texture button. Then select the Texture from a category. Choose OK.

.

Page 12: From the Editor E Newsletter · Kitchen, bathroom makeovers to rise 25% (an article from Nine MSN) In December 09, Nine MSN posted the following article which we thought our customers

2) Repeat the process for the next material..

3) The next step is to assign the textured material to the cabinet parts in the Exterior parts file if it hasn’t been done already. Do this with File Setup Parameters and select the desired Exterior parts file.

4) Select the various part types and assign the textured material to them. The Toe Kicks, Finished Ends, Drawer, Door and Face Frames would all need to be assigned a texture. Finished Backs and Fillers also may need a texture. The same Texture can be assigned to various materials. (Plywood and Solid stock for instance). Edge Banding doesn’t need a texture at this time.

5) Now all you need to do is assign the particular Exterior file to the Room that is for the predominate cabinet type and use Cabinet Modify – Parms to assign the second Exterior parts file to the cabinets that need the second texture.

Page 13: From the Editor E Newsletter · Kitchen, bathroom makeovers to rise 25% (an article from Nine MSN) In December 09, Nine MSN posted the following article which we thought our customers

6) After changing the Exterior parts file on all the cabinets in question, the filled render view will now display the selected textures.

(This method is restricted to Cabnetworks and the Detailer)
