Research
Behavioral ecology of the paperwasp (Polistes metricus) has beenstudied using an array of nest boxesat NESA. Colonies of these waspsare usually established by a singlefemale that lays all the eggs andattends the nest until the first groupof sterile workers—her daughters—mature. However, a significantproportion of colonies are foundedby two or more females, who sharethe work, though only one producesmost of the offspring. The researchwas focused on factors that wouldlead a female wasp to accept asubordinate role in these cases. These studies contributedsignificantly to scientific understand-ing of origins of social behavior ininsects.
The copperhead (Ankistrodon contortrix,a pit viper) is one of scores of speciesstudied at KSR. The early studies of HenryS. Fitch are recognized as classics withinvertebrate biology, and his later workspanning 50 years has providedunparalleled insight into the ecology andnatural history of snakes. Because KSR ismaintained as a permanent researchstation these kinds of long-term studies arepossible.

Numbers of small mammalsfluctuate greatly throughtime at most places inKansas and throughout theworld. Population increaseor decrease results fromchanges in death, birth, andimmigration rates, and thesecan be studied by markingindividual animals andrecording their movementsand persistence on a fixedarea. For nearly 30 years, researchers at the NelsonEnvironmental Study Areahave accumulated suchrecords on small mammalspecies during monthlycensuses. These recordshave demonstrated theimportance of body size indetermining probabilities ofanimals reproducing andremaining on the study area.In contrast to humans, fewrodents live long enough todie of age-related causesand thus body size is moreinfluential than age indetermining survival. Inaddition to empirical dataon mammal species, theselong-term data from KSR areused in modelingpopulation dynamics.
The annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus) readily colonizes disturbed sites and isabundant throughout the Midwest. Researchers at KSR are examining sunflowerpopulation dynamics at both local and regional spatial scales. One focus of theresearch is exploring whether there are likely to be ecological effects of gene exchangebetween cultivated varieties and wild populations. Such data are needed to evaluatethe potential impact of bioengineered crop plants.
Grassland ecosystems are of great economic importance in the Great Plains and are ideal model systems for addressingquestions of biodiversity. Researchers at KSR utilize a variety of approaches to examine how local and regionalmechanisms interact to modulate plant species diversity and temporal community dynamics in grasslands. Experimentalmanipulations of soil resources and seed availability investigate the relative importance of habitat productivity and localspecies pools in governing successional dynamics and diversity. Additional studies evaluate: landscape patterns in plantdiversity; the role of resource competition in grasslands; and the interactions of resource supply, disturbance, and smallmammal impacts in regulating grassland community structure.

The process of woody plant colonizationis studied at the Biotic Succession/Habitat Fragmentation (BSHF) facility atthe Nelson Environmental Study Area.Thousands of individual tree seedlingshave been tagged, and their growth andsurvivorship is monitored as part of along-term study. Data indicate that treesand shrubs invade faster in largerpatches, and in patches closer to intacthabitats. In addition, records obtainedfrom thousands of rough-leaveddogwood saplings (Cornus drummondii)reveal that growth rates are greatlydecreased where stem densities arehighest - this pattern has been predictedby theory, but has been difficult to testunder natural conditions. Habitatfragmentation has a major influence onecosystems. Researchers use the BSHFfacility to investigate the effects of patchsize and spatial dynamics on plants, animals, and their physical environment.
The interaction of agriculture and aquaticecosystems is an area of intense interest inthe Great Plains and throughout theworld. A multidisciplinary group ofscientists at KU (from the Departments ofEcology and Evolutionary Biology,Chemistry, Civil and EnvironmentalEngineering, and Economics) have beguna collaborative study of the effects ofmultiple stressors on aquatic ecosystems. The experimental portion of this researchproject seeks to clarify the interactingeffects of nutrient loading (eutrophication)and a toxic stressor (an agriculturalherbicide) on aquatic ecosystems. Theecological portion of this research will beconducted using the experimental pondarray at the Nelson Environmental StudyArea. In addition, the social sciencecomponent of this study seeks to evaluatepublic attitudes towards possiblepollution-related changes in surface waterquality and drinking water quality. Thisproject embraces a holistic approach todetermine ecological and societalrelationships within agro-ecosystems.
Musk thistle (Carduus nutans), anaggressive invader of overgrazedpastures and disturbed sites, isconsidered a noxious weed in mostparts of the United States. KSRinvestigators examined the populationbiology and ecology of musk thistle innaturally occurring populations as wellas in a variety of experimental plots. This research resulted in a series ofrecommendations for musk thistlecontrol based on its biology andcompetitive interactions in differentland management settings.

This Landsat TM image over KSR, taken on July 2, 1997 from asatellite orbiting about 705 kilometers (438 miles) above theearth’s surface, has a resolution of about 30 meters. The red-blue-near infrared image composite shows vegetation in bright red, dormant vegetation in pink, and water, pavement, or bare soil inshades of blue. Major features highlighted are roads, urbandevelopment, forest corridors, regional waterways, andagricultural lands. Remote sensing research at KSR has usedimages like this one to understand the effects of land use, landmanagement, and landscape fragmentation on ecological andenvironmental processes. The insights gained from this researchcan be applied across regional, national, and global scales andcan be used to enhance urban and watershed planning andnatural resource management.

KSR has assembled a geographic informationsystems (GIS) database containing a variety ofnational, state, local, and KSR geographic data.GIS is a computer-based tool for mapping andanalysis that stores information about the worldas a collection of thematic layers that can belinked together by geography. Shown in thebackground is an orthophoto of KSR’s northerntracts, with a tract boundary overlay. Insetshighlight the variety of digital data availablethrough the database including (top to bottom):tract-level historic aerial photos (1937-1994),digital soil maps, digital elevation models(DEMs), and a variety of vegetation monitoringdata. GIS has proven invaluable for solvingmany real-world problems, from recordingdetails of planning applications to modelingglobal atmospheric circulation. At KSR, GIS dataare combined in various ways for mapping, analysis, environmental assessment, and naturalresource planning.

Remote sensing is a technique used foranalyzing landscape patterns and trendsusing low altitude aerial photography orsatellite imagery. This series of aerialphotographs was taken in November2000 over a portion of KSR using anaircraft-mounted multispectral camera. These images were taken from an altitudeof 3048 meters (10,000 feet), with aground resolution of approximately onemeter. The camera acquires images in thered, blue, and near-infrared wavelengths. In the resulting image composites, healthyvegetation appears red, dormantvegetation is blue-green, and bare groundis white. The images are being used tostudy the interrelationships between landuse and land management and ecologicalprocesses such as changes in vegetationand water quality.

Water availability is a key factor affectingdistribution of forests in North America.Within the prairie-forest ecotone, whereKSR is located, variation in water useefficiency may be critical to survival ofdifferent tree species. Here students collectleaf samples from native trees to studywater use efficiency using stable isotopeanalysis. The method is based on the factthat many elements, including carbon, occur naturally as a mixture of stable non-radioactive isotopes (chemically identicalforms that differ in atomic mass). Theseslight differences cause the isotope ratiosof living plant tissues to vary as physiologi-cal and environmental conditions change.Stable isotope analysis is an important toolfor ecological research and is especiallyvaluable for understanding connectionsbetween environmental change andecosystem responses.
Chemicals in the atmosphere, whether naturally-occurring or in alteredconcentrations due to human activity, can significantly affect ecosystems. Forexample, nitrogen is common in the atmosphere and is an important element forplants, but can reach elevated levels due to pollution. KSR was the site of a multi-year, interdisciplinary study of atmospheric nitrogen inputs conducted by the KUAtmosphere/Ecosystem Interaction Research Laboratory; the ultimate goal of theproject was to model nitrogen deposition in an ecotonal (forest-grassland)ecosystem. An initial step in developing the model involved ambient air samplingand measurements of bulk, wet, and dry deposition to vegetative canopies; a 30-meter tower, equipped with sensors, was installed to enable these measurementsin a forest stand. The focus then shifted to analyzing the character of deposition(physical and chemical forms of nitrogen) and interactions with individualcanopy elements during specific weather events. These data provided a model ofatmospheric nitrogen input, and were integrated into a generalized depositionmodel for assessment of other anthropogenic pollutants in ecosystems.

For centuries people have relied on plantsfor health and healing. Even within the U.S.today, over 40% of prescription drugscontain at least one ingredient derivedfrom nature and fully 25% of drugscontain an ingredient derived fromflowering plants. Natural compounds fromour native plant species may be superior, orless expensive, than synthetic compoundsin certain situations. Modern laboratorytechniques now permit examination of thenatural chemical compounds found inplants. Combined with clinical trials, manyplants are now being shown to havepositive benefits for human health.Scientists use the plant growth facilities atKSR for propagating species used inmedicinal plant research. For example, atKSR scientists can experimentally controlfactors such as water and nutrient levels todetermine effects on the quantity andconcentration of natural plant compounds.Plants preserved in native communities atKSR, such as purple coneflower (Echinaceapallida, pictured here), represent astorehouse of diversity of naturalcompounds – some of which may hold thekey for disease and illness.

Earthwork for a 1.6-hectare (4-acre) wetland complexat the Robinson Tract, encompassing nine separatewetlands of various sizes and depths, was recentlycompleted. This project was made possible through acooperative agreement with partners including theKansas University Endowment Association, U.S. Fishand Wildlife Service, Natural Resources ConservationService, and the Kansas Biological Survey. Historically, the site contained shallow, ephemeral wetlands thatprovided habitat for plants and animals, natural filteringof surface waters, and buffers to flooding. However, years ago the site was drained for agriculture.Restoration efforts to date have involved returningoriginal drainage characteristics to the field andenhancing wetland conditions. Seeds of nearly 50species of plants collected by KU students will be sowninto the site, and the development of plants will bemonitored. A new loop trail will provide access forstudents to discover the wetlands and learn more aboutengineered wetland restoration.
The Topeka shiner (Notropis topeka) is a small nativefish whose distribution is now restricted to a fewstream drainages in the Great Plains, including theKansas and Cottonwood river basins in Kansas. Loss ofsuitable habitat over the last century – throughdegraded water quality and introduction of non-nativefish species – has drastically reduced the distribution ofthis minnow such that the U.S. Fish and WildlifeService has designated it as an endangered species.Research facilities at KSR provide scientists theopportunity to study the ecological and biologicalcharacteristics of the Topeka shiner, and other aquaticspecies. Information from these studies contributes todevelopment of conservation plans for rare species.
Mead’s milkweed (Asclepias meadii)is a rare, long-lived prairie plant. Oneof the largest and most geneticallydiverse populations of this species isfound at KSR’s Rockefeller Prairie.Researchers have studied thispopulation for over a decade tobetter understand its biology andfactors critical to its conservation atthe site.

KSR plays a significant role in scientificresearch around the globe.
Millions of sheep and goats are bred and raised on the steppes of Inner Mongolia, China. Researchers from the KansasApplied Remote Sensing program use satellite remotely-sensed data to study climatic influences on the phenology ofthese grasslands. Theoretical research conducted at KSR has contributed greatly to the development of multitemporalremote sensing analysis techniques that are now being used in Inner Mongolia where changing climatic conditions areinfluencing the socio-economics of the region.
For more than two decades researchers at theKansas Aquatic Mesocosm Program (KAMP)facility have participated in cooperativeexperimental field studies at other researchstations – including the Experimental LakesArea (ELA) research station in northwestOntario, Canada. ELA is the largest site in theworld for experimental manipulations ofnatural lakes. As at KSR aquatic facilities, researchers at ELA investigate ecosystemresponse to various manipulations in order tounderstand and predict the response toenvironmental change. Experimentalacidification of a portion of a lake (shownhere), followed by whole-lake manipulationssimulating exposure to acid precipitation, provide the framework for assessing theconsequences of pollution.

Frank B. Cross Reservoir
Cross Reservoir’s deep-waterphytoplankton (Cryptomonas spp.):position in relation to sulfide-oxygeninterface, light intensity, and stratifica-tion layers, 1998. The shaded regionrepresents the migration range ofCryptomonas. (adapted from C.W.Knapp, 1999)
Certain types of algae growing deep inlakes are adapted for growth under lowlight while they take advantage of thehigher nutrient conditions there. Some ofthese algae may even migrate upward aftersunrise to reach more light and later in theday return to the deeper water for morenutrients. An enclosure was placed inCross Reservoir through such a layer ofalgae at 6 meters. With lights attached atthe top of the enclosure, migration wasexperimentally manipulated to study theresponses of these algae to various lightand nutrient conditions.
Cross Reservoir has been studied intensively since 1993. It is intended to serve as a relatively undisturbedreference system for other Midwestern lakes and reservoirs. The only whole-basin manipulation is stocking withnative fish species. Any other experimental manipulations are conducted in temporary enclosures.

When any type of natural environment isexposed to a stress, either of natural originlike a drought, or from human actions likea pesticide application, a complex “chainreaction” of effects can result. Such effectscan be studied in experimental ponds, which serve as surrogates for naturalecosystems. In one such study followingthe effects of a common agriculturalherbicide over a period of three years, immediate changes in the pond plantcommunity later led to changes in insectsand fish due to alterations of their foodsources and habitat. The conclusion wasthat more widespread effects of thisherbicide would likely occur in thenatural environment than was previouslyexpected.

Results from a KAMP study of herbicide decomposition andmicrobial activity in relation to aquatic fertility in experimentalmesocosms. The microbial community is larger (shown by higherRNA concentration: circles) and the herbicide Alachlor is brokendown faster (indicated by a shorter half-life: squares) underconditions of greater aquatic fertility (measured by totalphosphorus concentration). The results suggest that high nutrientlevels lead to faster removal of the herbicide because theysupport a greater abundance of microbes that metabolize theherbicide. Understanding such interactions is essential to developeffective strategies for pollution management.

This figure, derived from1995 aerial photography, shows the spatial designof the BSHF facility andthe progress of woodyplant invasion after 11years of succession. Thesmall patches are 32 m2
in area, the medium are288 m2, and the large are5000 m2. A key feature ofthe BSHF design is thatsmall and mediumpatches are clustered, which permitscomparison of arrays ofsample units in large andsmall patches at the samespatial scale. (Adaptedfrom Yao et al. 1999.)
Long-term changes in smallmammal abundance anddistribution in patches(blocks) on the BSHF arrayare monitored as part ofthe BSHF researchprogram. This figuresummarizes data on thedeer mouse (Peromyscusmaniculatus), one ofseveral common species atthe site. (Adapted fromSchweiger et al. 2000.)
