M ARCH 2015 ISSUE F ORDS C OLONY CC. COM FROM THE DESK OF THE GM Okay, its time to get this winter behind us. Enough of these short days and cold weather; I am ready for spring. The committees and golf associations have worked with our country club staff to create some great events for our members this year. They have spent a great deal of time to find new and interesting ideas to go along with our annual favorites. With this, we feel hopeful that you will be able to find quite a few events that will suit your taste here at Ford’s Colony CC. With the help of our CCMA board, we have updated our club’s Membership Yearbook. You can find 2015’s edition online under the Information tab of the members only website and above the Club Calendar. Here you can find all of the information about our memberships, committees, associations and policies. Please let us know if you have any questions. On this most recent club statement, you will see the annual fee for our handicap system if you have chosen to participate in that program. We encourage all of our avid golfing members to enter your scores after each round to track your progress and keep a golf handicap to use for competition whether it is for fun with your friends or for club events. With the golf season approaching, you may need to store clothing for the ever changing weather here at the club. We do have lockers available for our members. The annual fee is only $35. Please contact Melissa Blane if you would like to use a locker. As a notice to our locker room users, all possessions including shoes and hats need to be stored inside the locker to avoid being tossed out during our daily clubhouse cleaning. Thank you for your cooperation. Please feel free to stop into my office, send me an email or call if you need to reach me. I am always interested in hearing your thoughts and ideas. Thank you for being part of our club. Sincerely, Bret Shifflett, PGA General Manager 757-258-4176, BShiffl[email protected] In like a lion, out like a lamb. I’m starting this month with a big smile knowing that the snow is gone and hoping the weather stays above my age. After sleigh riding, my body reminded me that I am not as physically young as I am mentally. Valentines was a big success for the 2 day events that we hosted in Harry’s and in the Members’ Grille. Harry’s had 125 guests, and the Members Grill fed over 250 members during the 2 day prix fixe event. Prime rib night continues to be a hit, (every third Thursday) as we peaked out at 125 members. The snow forced us to cancel Thursday night’s Taste of Tuscany event, but Wednesday night was successful. March is a very exciting month with a lot of energy. The market is a catch 22 and it’s true that the dreaded ‘food gap’ is upon us – the time of year when the markets are slowly running out of the winter root vegetables and the new growth of the spring vegetables slowly gets harvested. There are great deals on these new seasonal items as markets just bulk up on everything. Spring onions, rhubarb, fennel, asparagus, and broccoli start adding color to the shelves, while endive and arugula start filling up the greens cabinet. The local waters will start to jump with clams, mussels, and our world famous CRABS! Spring lamb is abundant with the Passover and Easter holidays approaching, along with most cuts of beef besides filet mignon. The demand for filet mignon was high during Valentine’s Day week, so the supply of every other cut went up as more and more filets were needed. The prices will be lower until the third week when the supply and demand catch up to each other. Our first “Beer Tasting” dinner in Harry’s is on March 5th. For just $24.99 you can enjoy a great 3 course meal that will include wild mushroom risotto with a smoked duck chili, braised short ribs with a beer BBQ glaze served with roasted sweet potatoes and grilled spring onions, and finish it off with a rhubarb and beer pie with caramelized pecans. This is a great value for everyone and the best part is that it’s right inside the gates of Ford’s Colony. The Members’ Grille reopens on the 3rd with a new menu! We will offer lighter food along with a few of the classics as we try to stay ahead and on top of recent trends and seasonal foods. Hours for the Grille are 12 noon until 3pm for lunch, Tuesday through Saturday. This will be the last month for Prime Rib Night as we roll into spring. Lobster Night will take over starting in April. we are doing a “invite your friends and neighbors” night. This will be a great way to showcase your club and share some great food. Come and dine on fresh shrimp, lamb, cod fish, halibut, shish kebobs, chicken tagine, and a classic Moroccan lentil soup. St. Patrick’s Day in both Harry’s and in the Garden Pavilion for the members will be a celebration like no other. Don’t miss out on some great corned beef and cabbage.

Men’s Night out is scheduled for the 11th and FUHGED-DABOUTIT. It’s going to be great enjoying food from the neighborhood. Yo, your killing me, Vinnie and the boys are gonna have fun cooking with me as I really get to enjoy serving you some great classics from the “Family”. Make sure you make

March has a number of reasons to pique our interests and to celebrate. We have American Red Cross/Women’s History month, National Reading Day, and theanniversary of Texas’s independence from Mexico.

To me, personally, March signifies the initial priming of Golf Academy events and programming and has a lot of opportunities to help you get ready for the upcoming golf season:

• Junior After School Clinics: Tuesday – Friday 4:30 to 5:30 • LGA 9 Wednesday Clinics • 4 Tee Start Up Lessons • Last month of Grip Sale • Posting and sign up opens for all Academy clinics/events/demo day

We have competed updates to our 2015 Golf Academy program. We are happy to include better benefits for our Golf Academy members that ever before. We now offer a special discount on golf club purchases just for our Golf Academy members. For the best prices anywhere, our Academy members pay only 10% over the cost of the clubs (including shipping). We offer discounts on club fitting as well. So if you are in the market to improve your equipment this year, you should really consider becoming a mem-ber of our Golf Academy. Please check out our brochure online under “Golf Academy” for all of our information.

So, if you can find time this March in-between giving blood, reading about women’s history whilst eating picante salsa, look into the Golf Academy to help your game and prepare for the 2015 golf season.

If you have any questions or need further programing details please feel free to stop by.

I look forward to seeing you out at the Academy. Cheers,

Eric Simmons, Director of [email protected]

your reservations early, so you don’t get stuck on “da stoop”, looking in.

I’m working on my 3rd year here at FCCC and it keeps getting better. As the year gets planned and events start happening, it amazes me how many different types of events we host. As the weather gets warmer we start moving outdoors onto Harry’s Patio and on the Members’ Terrace. Stayed tuned for the new menus, new drink specials and freshly rested staff.

I hope everyone has a great month, and I look forward to seeing you at the club.

From the Mats

With the freezing cold and snow over the last few weeks of February we have had to move Blackheath’s greens aeration dates. The greens will most likely still be frozen the first week in March and doing an aeration will do more damage than good. Therefore, Blackheath will be closed for aeration from March 30th to April 3rd and will be open on the originally scheduled dates of March 2nd – 6th.The Divot Day’s schedule will also change slightly. The first Divot Day scheduled for March 3rd has been changed to March 31stdue to all of the snow we have received lately. Please note thefollowing updated schedule:

• Tuesday, March 10th Blue Heron • Tuesday, March 17th Marsh Hawk • Tuesday, March 31st Blackheath The finishing touches are being put on the Golf Shop remodeling. Come by and check out our new look!

We will be extending the sale in the golf shop until March 8th. Most of our women’s and men’s apparel are 50-70% off in addition to discounted 2014 Pro V1 and Pro V1X golf balls, $50 off all golf clubs in the shop with the exception of putters, and a discounted shoe display with Footjoy, Ashworths, Adidas, and Nikes.

As a reminder, we will also have our annual shoe cleaning service from March 1st to March 15th this year. Have your golf shoes cleaned complimentarily while having the golf pros help you find new spikes if needed.

See you on the links,

Member’s YearbookClub Management and the CCMA have been working diligently to update the member’s Yearbook for 2015. It is now available on the member’s only homepage above the Club Calendar for you to view and save for your records. The member’s Yearbook is a comprehensive handbook that details membership benefits, Club associations and committees, provides contact information, and outlines the rules and guidelines of Ford’s Colony Country Club.

In the next few weeks we will begin the process of applying a green colorant to the fairways. Not only will this give visual definition between the fairways and rough, but the colorant also absorbs more heat than dormant Bermuda grass. This warming causes an earlier greening of the fairways, which in turn gives us a longer growing season.

Please don’t forget our Bent grass greens aerification schedule this spring, as it has changed: Marsh Hawk will be closed March 16th through March 20th and Blackheath will be closed March 30th through April 6th. Mr. Zivica has been kind enough to head up “Divot Days” on the following dates: Blue Heron March 10th, Marsh Hawk March 17th, and Blackheath March 31st. THANK YOU Mr. Zivica and to all who plan to participate.
