ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE AND OUR LADY OF THE LAKE/MOUNT CARMEL IS A ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WITH THE EUCHARIST AS THE CENTER OF ITS LIFE. OUR MISSION, AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST, IS TO BUILD UP THE KINGDOM OF GOD BY LEADING, NOURISHING AND SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN WORD AND SACRAMENT. From the Desk of Msgr. Marchitelli January 3, 2016 Last week, while making my usual visitation to our school I passed by Mrs. Crawford’s classroom to see, and hear, the students going up to the front of the classroom and placing gifts in a box. Nothing unusual at this time of year and I assumed that they were part of a “grab bag” or a “Secret Santa”. This was different however as what I heard did not go along those lines. Instead I heard the students saying things like, “this is paper for a soldier to write home with”, or, “this is a gift for a small child who does not have what we have”. While I have taken license with the exact words, they were the gist of what was being said. I then asked Mrs. Crawford what was going on and she informed me that it was her custom to have the students give gifts without expecting anything in return. The recipients of these gifts would be soldiers serving overseas, senior citizens and sick children and the like. This was to show the students the true meaning of Christmas, to give without thinking of a return as Christ had given us the gift of His Birth and life everlasting. I could not have been more proud of those students, and their teacher, than at that moment. It is moments like that that I answer the question “why a Catholic School” education. The teaching of things besides reading and math and all of those other necessary subjects, it is the life lessons that we can speak of openly that make us different. This message from the pastor was supposed to be about the starting of a New Year, and I think that this does very nicely. That spirit of selfless giving, exemplified by the gifts of these children, is what we should be about all the year long. We take so much for granted in this life, all the thousand gifts God gives us daily. As we usher in this New Year, let us make a resolution; not to lose a few pounds, or to do this or that thing, but let us resolve to be more aware of the gifts that are around us. All that our gracious God has bestowed upon us and let us seek to pass that goodness on to others all the days of the year. READINGS FOR TODAY, THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Isaiah rejoices over the light and glory that will shine upon Jerusalem. MEN OF ST. JAMES

The “Men of St. James” come together for prayer and discussion to make what the Pope is calling for a reality here at St. James Church. It is also a place to re-kindle the fire that may have grown dim or just to meet other men who are also trying to be faithful Catholic men. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday’s at 7:00AM in the Carriage House. Come. “Open the door.” They called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith..." (Acts 14:27)

ST. SEBASTIAN’S TERRACE AND COLUMBARIUM

182 purchased - 270 Niches still available

Our Terrace and Columbarium are open. We have already celebrated Mass at the new Altar and have 89 niches engraved and interred. The price of a niche is $2,500, which gives you the right to inter the cremains of two people. If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, and would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Mrs. Maureen Larkin at 845-225-2079 at Ext. 105, on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word that describes a collection of niches to house urns containing cremated human remains. Usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death, columbaria are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a ‘churchyard’ or landscaped terrace. May the Lord who has blessed this project now be a final resting place for many of our loved ones.

(2) the blacktop and repair of the old parking lot at Our Lady of the Lake/Mt. Carmel. We will update the bulletin once each project is complete.

Please call Maureen Larkin in the Parish office 225-2079 x 105 for additional information.

Letter from St. James Confirmation Candidates Each Confirmation Candidate was asked to write a personal letter indicating their desire to be confirmed. Please pray for these young people as they prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

My name is Kellie Gavin and I am 13 years old. I have been going to St. James the Apostle School since preschool. I enjoy being with my friends and family, doing makeup, and just having fun in whatever ways I can. I like to go shopping with friends and I usually go out with them on the weekends, which is something that I truly enjoy any time we go. One of my best friend’s name is Heather, and we always go out during the weekends to see each other when we are not in school. My parents’ names are Christopher and Heather Gavin. I am one of six kids in my family in which their names are Christopher, Nicholas, Stephanie, Anthony, me, and my little brother Patrick. My school accomplishments are that I have been able to make it all the way through to eighth grade, while still getting grades that I am happy with. I like to push myself to the next level to try and reach goals that I have set for myself over time, like getting grades that are in the nineties or higher. In the future, I plan to always be able to continue pushing myself to reach my goals and follow what I want to do, and to be doing very well and be happy with it all the time. When I am older I hope to be a lawyer. I have many things that describe who I am that I wouldn’t trade for anything else in the world, because I am happy with who they make me.

I am a proud Catholic and it is something that I

take very seriously because I know that I will always believe in the one true God and know that he is always going to be the center of my faith. Being a Catholic is important to me because I know that no matter what I do or who I am, I will always be forgiven and loved by God. There is someone in my life that had given me an example of being a good Catholic, that is my brother Christopher’s girlfriend Karen. She is a good example of a good Catholic because she goes to Church regularly and she likes to spread her faith and inform people of it so they can be knowledgeable about her faith like she is. She inspires me with her faith and her will to spread it among others. She is an example to me because I want to be like her when I am older and even now, and be able to spread my faith and knowledge

Page 6: From the Desk of Msgr. Marchitelli January 3, 2016...2016/01/03  · usher in this New Year, let us make a resolution; not to lose a few pounds, or to do this or that thing, but let

about it to others. Being a Catholic is something that is to be taken seriously as a priority, especially to me.

In any subject, there are questions that some people still need clarification on, especially in the Catholic faith. One question that I have that is still unanswered is whether some people that were mentioned in the Bible were real people, or metaphors for other things, like sins or just things that we shouldn’t do and people we shouldn’t be like. I wonder this, because I know that in the Bible, there are many things that when you analyze them, they have a deeper meaning than what is written. Another question that I have is what happens to us when our souls are still in the ground, before Purgatory and Heaven. Among our Catholic faith, there are many other questions to be answered and that in the future, could potentially have answers that we just have not found yet.

As a Catholic, I feel that attending mass is a big

portion of keeping our faith a big priority. I attend mass every Friday (when school is in session), and every Sunday of the year. I can honestly say that I will continue to attend mass regularly, in order to prepare myself for my Confirmation. When receiving the Sacraments, I feel that it is extremely important to attend mass regularly, in order to stay true to your faith and be prepared for your Sacraments so that you can go even after you receive them. Mass is very important to our faith’s growth and ability to continue, because when we go to mass, we are participating and contributing to our faith. Mass is the center and stability of our faith as it grows and develops over time, as we become older and more informed about it.

I feel that Confirmation is one of the more

important Sacraments because when we receive it, we are truly entering into the Catholic community and we take on more responsibility to continue it and to be trusted to live our faith. I feel that I am ready to receive Confirmation because I feel that I have come so far in my practice of the Catholic faith, that I am fully ready and able to be trusted to take it with respect. This is a very important Sacrament to me because when I receive it and take on the responsibility of my faith, I know that I am truly devoting my life to my religion and I know that I will be able to continue it for the rest of my life. Confirmation is something that you need to know that you are ready to take your faith to the

next level, which is why I feel like I am ready to receive it. I think that I am fully prepared to take my faith to the next level, and become a real member of this religion and be able to take that honor responsibly. Confirmation is something that I feel is extremely important for everyone because becoming a member of the Catholic faith means that you know that you can be a participant of that faith.

I am proud of everything that I have

accomplished and done in my life, and I know that I am ready to achieve more. My next step of my accomplishments is to receive Confirmation. This is the next step, because I feel that once I have done so, I am on my way to furthering my Catholic faith. I plan to achieve many goals even after I receive Confirmation, but my main priority as of now is to receive Confirmation and prepare myself for what is to come in terms of my faith. Receiving Confirmation is like a gift or an award in my eyes because I feel like the only way that you should receive Confirmation is if you really deserve it and if you really want it. Otherwise, there is no point in receiving it and it is just a waste of time. I feel that I am ready for Confirmation because I know that I will receive it as if it is a reward that I had to work hard for. Everyone is deserving of receiving any of the Sacraments, as long as they are in it for their faith and religion, and will treat it with respect, just as they should with anything involving their faith.

Dear Parishioners,

Thank you for your gifts, cards, cookies, cakes and

Christmas wishes.
