St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. Our mission, as disciples of Jesus Christ, is to build up the Kingdom of God by leading, nourishing and serving the community in Word and Sacrament. FROM THE DESK OF FR. SZYMON KURPIOS APRIL 15, 2018 Today’s Gospel refers to the Resurrection of the Lord. Two disciples of Emmaus are going to Jerusalem and once there, while explaining how the Lord made himself known to them, the Resurrected Jesus appears in their midst. However, his presence is disconcerting. On one hand, it provokes a great fright to them as they thought they were seeing a ghost. (Lk 24:37). On the other hand, his body pierced by the nails and the spear, is an eloquent testimony that he was the very Jesus, the Crucified one. “Look at my hands and feet and see that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves that a ghost has no flesh and bones as I have” (Lk 24:39). Lord, show us the light of your face! sings the psalm of today's liturgy. Jesus then opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. It is quite urgent; it is absolutely necessary that the disciples have a clear and profound understanding of the Scriptures. St. Jerome tells us, “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ”. Understanding the word of God is not something we can manage privately, or within a gathering of friends or acquaintances. The Lord revealed the meaning of the Scriptures to the Church gathered in that Paschal community presided over by Peter and the other Apostles. They were appointed by the Master so that “repentance and forgiveness in his name would be proclaimed to all the nations”. (Lk 24:47). Therefore, to be witnesses to the real Christ it is urgent that, in the first place, the disciples learn how to recognize his Passion Scarred Body. An ancient author makes the following recommendation to us: “He, who understands that our Pasch has been sacrificed for him, has also to understand that his life starts when Christ died to redeem us”. Furthermore, the apostle has to intelligently understand the Scriptures, read under the light of the Spirit of truth spilled over into the Church. May you all have a blessed Easter season! Readings for this Sunday First Reading: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19 Second Reading: I John 2:1-5a Gospel: Luke 24:35-48 Jesus appeared to two disciples, though at first, they feared he was a ghost. Jesus ate with them to prove he was not a ghost. He explained that he had fulfilled the prophet’s words about him. He also explained that in his name they must preach doing penance for the forgiveness of sins. Readings for Next Week First Reading: Acts 4:8-12 Second Reading: I John 3:1-2 Gospel: John 10:11-18 Jesus speaks of a shepherd working only for pay, with no real concern for the sheep being well cared for.

Readings for Next Week

First Reading: Acts 4:8-12 Second Reading: I John 3:1-2 Gospel: John 10:11-18 Jesus speaks of a shepherd working only for pay, with no real concern for the sheep being well cared for. But Jesus is our shepherd and would lay down his own life for all those in his flock. God loves him for his willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of all God’s children.

ST. SEBASTIAN’S COLUMBARIUM AND TERRACE

217 Niches Purchased 227 Niches Available

110 Cremains have been Interred

The price of a niche is $2,500, which allows you to inter the cremains of two people. We have celebrated Mass at the Altar of our Terrace and Columbarium many times. If you have questions or have been thinking of purchasing a niche, call Donna McCarthy at 845-225-2079 Ext. 105, on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to schedule an appointment. For those not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word, which describes a collection of niches to house urns containing, cremated human remains. The niches are usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death. They are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a ‘churchyard’ and landscaped terrace. We pray that this holy ground becomes a final resting place for many of our loved ones.
