July - 2014 From the Desk of Chairman Dear Friends, Greetings! Additional leading practices include thorough integration into overall project-delivery processes, technology support for workflow and data requirements, and, when feasible, use of the same systems across all parties. Strengthening teamwork through behavioral change management: Change management is associated with communications, training and other forms of assistance people need to understand how changes affect their work and the project's end goal. Communication needs to flow in both directions, not only from the project leader through the organization. Lower-level people need to be encouraged to speak up when they sense potential problems. To avoid rework and delays, organizations need to assess, approve and communicate changes to relevant parties before proceeding with those changes. Working closely with operations: The earlier operations personnel are involved, the better chance of building assets that can be operated as planned and completed closer to schedule. Integrated Information Technology: Data needs to be captured at the first point by the most appropriate person or system, updated as needed and shared in forms that work for project teams as well as operations people. An end-to-end approach helps avoid unnecessary data migration headaches and speeds delivery of the asset to operations. IT systems can be designed to identify potential problems and reduce costs. Finally, the Commissioning / Startup phase assists in the delivery of a project that provides a safe and healthy facility; optimizes energy use; reduces operating costs; ensures adequate O&M staff orientation and training; and improves systems documentation. In this context, IIChE-BRC is planning to organize a one day seminar in the mid of Sep-2014, which will focus on various ways for smooth commissioning & flawless startup. Looking forward for your continuous support. Warm regards, K. Sudhakar Chairman

July - 2014

From the Desk of ChairmanDear Friends,

Greetings!

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all of you and especially my fellow members for successful completion of our center's activities in 2nd quarter of this year - a major one being technical seminar on “Trends in Design of Process Equipment internals”.

In today's competitive environment, and looking at the scale and complexity of projects, I would like to share my views on overcoming the challenges for effective delivery of capital projects in Oil and Gas industries. Few of the improvement elements are;

1. Comprehensive and rigorous advanced planning

2. Improving the transition from the construction phase to a producing asset

3. Developing and retaining talent

Talking about the above item no. 2, below are the several ways to improve delivery results:

Effective leadership:

Good leaders play very important role in effectively managing the transition from capital projects to operating assets. Leaders should follow an integrated project management methodology, including guidelines and tools. They should keep track of performance data on projects, as well as more systematic use of KPIs to monitor delivery.

Configuration management:

Configuration management is the process of developing and verifying the consistency of physical and functional attributes with design requirements. The original designs for components of a project are likely to change well before the project is completed and transitioned to operations. Any changes in the design need to be logged, with information properly structured. Inadequate configuration management undermines quality, increases costs and delays commissioning of new assets.

Additional leading practices include thorough integration into overall project-delivery processes, technology support for workflow and data requirements, and, when feasible, use of the same systems across all parties.

Strengthening teamwork through behavioral change management:

Change management is associated with communications, training and other forms of assistance people need to understand how changes affect their work and the project's end goal. Communication needs to flow in both directions, not only from the project leader through the organization. Lower-level people need to be encouraged to speak up when they sense potential problems. To avoid rework and delays, organizations need to assess, approve and communicate changes to relevant parties before proceeding with those changes.

Working closely with operations:

The earlier operations personnel are involved, the better chance of building assets that can be operated as planned and completed closer to schedule.

Integrated Information Technology:

Data needs to be captured at the first point by the most appropriate person or system, updated as needed and shared in forms that work for project teams as well as operations people.

EVENTS ORGANIZED

We are delighted to inform you that Indian Institute

of Chemical Engineers, Baroda Regional Center

(IIChE – BRC) had successfully conducted a one

day national seminar on “TRENDS IN DESIGN OF

PROCESS EQUIPMENT INTERNALS” on 26th

April.'14 at Hotel Express Towers, Alkapuri,

Vadodara.

The program provided good insight to latest

developments in Column internals, Reactor

internals & Filtration technology and was also very

helpful in clearing doubts of many participants in

these areas. The seminar also focused on major

technological breakthrough; recent advances

being mainly reflected in increasing both

mechanical and process design flexibility.

The developments in column internals and reactor

internals are needed to preserve its pre-eminent

position in the field of separation / reaction. Further,

as there is an ever increasing demand for more

energy efficiency, higher requirements for

operational & maintenance flexibility and better

approach towards safety, this gives the boost to

improve Distillation / Reaction processes and from

time to time breakthroughs are made which move

this technology to a higher level of sophistication.

In this time of globalization of all aspects of human

life, with less ground left for small undertakings,

faster innovation cycles are an imperative. It is our

belief that a more effective utilization of resources

available within this proven, industrial users /

collaborations formula will help us to respond

successfully to challenges for faster technology

developments in the field of design of process

equipment internals.

The faculties for this seminar were technical

experts from operating companies (IOCL and RIL),

Engineering consultancy (Larsen & Toubro, Linde,

and Quanta Process), Column internal / filter

vendors (Sulzer, Pall filters). The seminar was very

educative as well as useful in understanding recent

developments in various fields of design,

engineering, operation. The participants included

professionals from design, engineering,

operations, maintenance and project execution

field. Overwhelming response and positive

feedback was received regarding this seminar.

FORTH COMING PROGRAMS

With your support and encouragement, following

programs too are planned in this quarter:

1) Half day Safety program at L&T-Knowledge

City on 25-Jul-'14.

This program is aimed to give introduction to

international practices of performing several

special HSE related studies during design /

engineering phase of a project. L&T will share their

experience of working with international Clients

including Shell, Total, Adnoc etc.

In this regards, we invite IIChE members to also

share their experiences about HSE in design /

engineering by presenting appropriate case

studies.

We also invite members to attend this program,

which will give an insight on various special HSE

studies. The program will be hosted by L&T-

Chiyoda and there are no fees for participation.

Please send your nominations to participate /

attend this program to IIChE-BRC secretary before

15-Jul-'14.

2) One day National Seminar on effective ways for

smooth commissioning and flawless start-up of

project during mid of Sep-'14.

Transition from the construction phase to a

producing asset is very important step for safe

delivery of any project. This phase assists in the

delivery of a project that provides a safe and

healthful facility; optimizes energy use; reduces

operating costs; ensures adequate O&M staff

orientation and training; and improves systems

documentation. However, there are many

challenges associated with Commissioning and

startup activities. In this context, IIChE-BRC is

planning to organize a one day seminar in the mid

of Sep-2014, which will focus on various ways for

smooth commissioning & flawless startup of

project.
