Kyla Bonney and Trevor DurbidgeDeputy Principals

Year P-2 messages with Mr DurbidgeIdeas, Ideas and more ideas… everywhere you go in the juniorclassrooms, students are being inspired to share their greatideas for stories. Teachers and students need to becongratulated for their enthusiastic start to our school’s longterm focus for improvement in writing.

Many of our teachers, at this early stage of our work on writing, are taking the opportunity to model for our students, how todraw out ideas for stories from the everyday stimulus aroundus. A common practice of teachers is to ‘think aloud’ andexplain to students the thought processes going on inside theirown heads as they draw out ideas for stories from stimulus likephotographs, pictures, artefacts, story books and just simpleeveryday occurrences.

I have enjoyed seeing just how inspired students are to write. This is what we need, students wanting to share. While it mightseem strange, a lesser focus on perfection with conventionslike spelling and punctuation allows our students to be moreinspired to ‘get their ideas out there!’

Keep it up kids, you are doing great.

Rock and Water : Year Four

All students in year four are currently participating in theeducational program Rock and Water. Each class teacherworks with our chaplain Tony to deliver this program.

The aim of the program is to build a Rock and Water Person. This is a person who is aware of their own qualities and who hasthe courage to follow their feelings, who is willing to discovertheir own path and who will be able to manage theresponsibilities and challenges they encounter on their waythrough life. This program is designed to be run as a wholeclass as it focuses on common language, and a commonapproach, to life - the tough immovable rock attitude versusthe mobile, communicative water attitude. The students learnabout the importance of choosing when to be a rock person(strong in your situation) or when to be a water person (moreflexible and moving). A social application, for example, would bein conversations there are at times when you need to be strongand hold your values and beliefs; and there are times when itcan be just as effective to hold on to your values & beliefs butallow for others who think differently to you.

This program aims to develop rock and water people. Bothtraits are needed.

Each class will engage in a small number of lessons across thenext five weeks. The concepts covered in the lesson are thenreferred to and practiced in the classroom and playground.

Year 6 Grip Leadership Conference

A couple of weeks ago, all of the year six leaders wentto a Grip Leadership Day. There were lots of schools withamazing leaders. We were placed in a hall with assignedgroups of chairs for each school. While we waited for theaction to start, we were given a little booklet to completewith lots of fun activities to do in it. Finally the showstarted. It was very humorous yet we still learnt a lot and itwas great meeting students from all of the other schools.I think it was a fantastic experience and hope all of nextyear’s student leaders love it as much as we did!

March Writing Challenge

This month’s writing challenge is a fun one.Have you ever spilt some tomato sauce?Stood on a packet of ketchup and watchedthe bright red liquid paint the new timberfloor? The challenge this month is to write ahumourous short story entitled “The Tomato Sauce”. Bestof luck everyone and Mrs Kelly, Mrs Lowry and I can’t wait toread the next lot of entries.

NAPLAN

I wanted to take this opportunity not only to inform you of thedates of this year’s National Assessment Program: Literacy andNumeracy (NAPLAN) tests, but to also share our philosophyabout the tests. While we often hear a lot about the negativesof such testing, we do believe that we should use the datawe receive on our performance as best we can. As such,

we always pay attention to the details in our school scores. However, this does not mean we get involved in the business ofoveremphasising the importance of individual student scores ona once-off test. We look for patterns of achievement that mayraise important questions about how we teach certain aspectsof literacy and numeracy and develop plans on how to addressthese.

Rest assured that we have a balanced and level-headedapproach to NAPLAN. Although in Years 3 and 5 students willdo some practise leading into the assessments, this is mainly toprepare them for the conditions they will face in the test. Theseinclude having to write a piece without teacher guidance withina strict timeframe, or answering multiple choice questions at aquick enough rate to attempt all the questions in the test. Asmuch as possible, we strive to make sure the tests themselvesdo not create an air of importance greater than that of anyother assessment we undertake with our students. That is, weconsciously aim to reduce the pressure associated with theNAPLAN testing week. If your son or daughter is feeling anxiousabout the tests, assure them that we only want them to do theirbest and if they do we will be very proud of them. Also, pleasefeel free to talk to your child’s teacher about this.

NAPLAN Dates for 2018:

Tuesday 15 May – Language Conventions and WritingTestWednesday 16 May – Reading TestThursday 17 May – Numeracy TestFriday 18 May – Catch up day for any students who wereabsent

ICAS Tests

Usually our school offers students in Years 5 and 6 a chance toparticipate in the ICAS tests (with additional cost of $5-$10 pertest) which are international tests run by the University of NSW.Unfortunately, this year half the tests that we normally offer aspart of this are scheduled in the NAPLAN week and as such wewill not be offering them. We will consider the options for theseagain in 2019.

The Lonely Friends

One stormy dark morning I was in thehailing rain all alone. Matilda was walking inthe rain with me and then we saw this oldrusty castle.

We knocked on the door and suddenly the door opened by itsself. We stepped in and the doors slammed shut behind us. Wegot locked in. We got scared so we walked quietly around thecastle we found a window so we jumped out the window. I fellin a deep dark bush.

Next I ran out of the bush next he ran and ran then he ran intoa tree and bumped his head. There was a rustle in the bushesa lion jumped out. The lion roared he got terrified, he screamedhe ran along. The lion chased him away to the wall of the castle.

The Camping Trip

Mike wanted to go camping even though the weather wasstarting to turn. He entered the forest with all of his campinggear and started to look for a spot to camp. While he waswalking he thought about turning back because the forest wasvery gloomy. His desire to go camping was too strong soinstead he kept walking through the dark forest. Mike found anarea and began to set up his camping gear. Once his camp sitewas set up he decided to go exploring through the forest.

While walking through the forest Mike came upon a wobblyold bridge. The sky was beginning to turn grey and as he wasabout to walk across the wobbly bridge he heard a rustling inthe bush. Mike heard a loud crack of thunder and saw a flashof lightning. All of a sudden a ferocious monster jumped outfrom the bush and started growling at Mike. The monster hadrazor sharp claws and red eyes, with pointed teeth and hornsas sharp as blades. In an instant, Mike realised that he was allalone and in a very bad situation.

Mike ran for his life over the wobbly bridge and turned back tosee the monster hot on his heels. As the vicious monster wascrossing the bridge, Mike who had safely made it to the otherside started to swing the bridge from side to side. The monsterlost his balance and fell off the bridge all the way to the bottomof the canyon. Never to be seen again.

The plane landed with a loud screech, eeeeeeeeeeerrr! Zackand Zoey had just landed in Egypt and were getting off theplane, stretching their sore legs after the long flight. They tooktheir shoes off to feel the crusty golden sand tickle their feet.Zack and Zoey were about to set off on a camping trip when inthe distance they noticed a huge, sandy Pyramid. It looked as ifit was glowing, like shiny treasure! They set out to find a campsite close to the glowing Pyramid.

Suddenly, Zack stepped on shiney golden booby trap thatmade the floor fall into red boiling hot lava. Zack and Zoey triedto run away but they kept on going down. Luckily, Zack had agrabble hook in his pocket.

Zack pulled Zoey up to the roof because she had a knife inher pocket. Zoey started cutting through the crusty roof of thepyramid. Then Zack’s grabble hook snapped but when theywere falling, Zoey got her knife and threw it at the lever thatcovered up the lava. They had just enough time to fix Zack’sgrabble hook and shot it up so Zack and Zoey could get out. When they finally made it out they went straight to the jet andflew home.

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEHAVIOUR

Week 9

In the lead up to parent teacher interviews, we will be askingyour children to reflect on how they manage and takeresponsibility for their learning. We are doing this to assistthem in developing the school value of Commitment. At BBSSCommitment is where we encourage our community to achievetheir personal best through perseverance and commitment tolearn.

In an age appropriate way students will be asked how they thinkthey are going with respect to the amount of effort they areputting in towards their learning and if they think their behaviouris the best it could be. They will also be asked to set a goal fornext term, what would they like to get better at, how will theydo this and how will they know they have been successful?

Parent Tip: Be sure not to miss the opportunity to talk with yourchild’s teacher. Parent teacher interviews provide a fabulousopportunity to connect in with the school and discuss how wecan both support your child as they learn and grow.

Week 10

In the last week we will be revising and celebrating the threeschool expectations; Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learnerand what that means in each classroom. Each classroomteacher will have been actively working to learn somethingnew every day about each child; it is just what our fabulousteachers do. They have also been working explicitly to teachthese expectations to your children. Conversely, your child willhave learnt more about their classroom teacher and what theyexpect over the last ten weeks. Through the development ofthis great partnership between student and teacher, manywonderful experiences have occurred and now it is time tocelebrate. This week at parade, The Spirit of Bli Bli will beawarded to students who have consistently displayedoutstanding dedication to our school values and who havefollowed our school expectations.

What’s News in HPE

With Term one quickly drawing to an end it also means ourSchool Cross Country is not far away. All students from Prep– Yr 6 have been working hard on improving their fitness byparticipating in running training, Beep tests, HIIT (High IntensityInterval Training) sessions and games. It has been great seeingall the red sweaty faces and enthusiasm of the students to wantto do similar activities again the following week. Some studentshave even taken some of the fitness training ideas home andare making the rest of their family “get fit” with them. Fitness/running training will continue for the remainder of the term.

Over the past few weeks students aged 10-12 have beentrialling for District selection in a variety of sports fromSoftball, Netball, Soccer and Rugby League. Good luck to allwho participated. Once trials are complete and teams havebeen selected I hope to name some of our students in makingthese teams.

Parenting after Divorce and Separation

This brief online survey is still open to interested parents -

https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/pads

Separation and divorce can be a stressful and challenging timefor parents and children. It can put children at risk for emotionaland behavioural problems, poor academic achievement, andongoing relationship problems. Parents also may alsoexperience increased depression, anxiety and stress.

It is important that families have access to evidence-basedpreventative interventions. Researchers at the University ofSouth Australia and The University of Queensland aredeveloping an online intervention to support parents during thistransition. They are encouraging parents to have an input intowhat is important to go in the program and what their needsare.
