From the Dean’s Desk We have a great deal of exciting things to look forward to, as we head into spring. We will soon be wishing the Class of 2013 the best, as they graduate and move onto the next phase of their dental careers. We’re also greatly anticipating the completion of the new Brunsden‐Villa Pediatric Dental Clinic and the Delta Dental Special Care Clinic. We recently held the ofϐicial groundbreaking ceremony (see below), which made us mindful, once again, that we have some very dedicated, hard‐working people at NJDS, who helped us realize this dream. Many thanks again to all of our donors and all those who helped with this huge undertaking. Enjoy the delightful spring weather. A Message from the Dean NJDS Breaks New Ground Faculty, staff, alumni and donors celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Brunsden‐Villa Pediatric Clinic and Delta Dental Special Care Clinic on April 24. The day marked the realization of a long‐awaited and hard‐ won dream come true. In her remarks Dean Feldman said it was important to come together to thank the donors and to celebrate this milestone in the school’s history. “This groundbreaking is clear evidence that NJDS’s future is extremely bright,” she said. “We are continuing to move forward, developing innovative educational programs and providing even more care to the underserved citizens of our state.” Denise Rodgers, MD, president (interim) of UMDNJ, also spoke, recalling the many conversations she and Dean Feldman had about the need for a new facility. “This is ϐinally happening because of the dean’s resolve and the support of many people who are here today,” she said. “My congratulations to everyone.” Among the donors present were Drs. Cavan Brunsden,’79, and Nancy Villa–Brunsden,’89; Mr. Walter Van Brunt, Dr. Ronald Deblinger, Dr. Gene Napoliello and Dr. Gerald Sydell of Delta Dental of NJ; Marsha Atkind of the Health Care Foundation of NJ; and Drs. Milton Houpt, Glenn Rosivack, Evan Spivack and Justin Stone of NJDS. The new facility will have 35 operatories (nine for special care), a smart education/conference room, wider halls and doorways for wheelchairs and gurneys, and private reception/billing areas. The renovations are scheduled to be completed in the fall. April 2013 NJDS will offer free oral cancer screenings, as it hosts the Essex/ Passaic Wellness Coalition’s Annual Health Fair, on Thursday, May 9, from 9 am to 7 pm, on DLevel of the Oral Health Pavilion. Information on a variety of health topics and free cancer risk assessments will be available throughout the day. Take advantage of this opportunity to have a free screening. When oral cancer is diagnosed in its earliest stages, it is easily treated. Don’t be among the 7,000 Americans who die of oral cancer each year. Oral Cancer Screening Scheduled Above: Dr. Ronald Deblinger (l) and Mr. Walter Van Brunt of Delta Dental of NJ with Dean Feldman on the construction site Right: Special care pediatric dentists (l-r) Mark Robinson, DMD, Tomas Ballesteros, DMD, and Evan Spivack, DDS, in the soon-to-be special care clinic
