From the Dean’s Desk I hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe holiday season. As we begin another year together, I want to thank everyone for their hard work in 2012. I am proud of the many successes we had last year and the innovative ways we solved the challenges we faced. I look forward to working with each of you this year. I know as we merge with Rutgers in July, you will continue to provide the quality services that have made us one of the leading academic dental institutions in the country. Happy New Year! A Message from the Dean It has been ϐive years since NJDS fourth‐ year students began participating in the CODE II program, and by all accounts things could not be going better. Short for Community‐Oriented Dental Education‐two, CODE II gives every senior the opportunity to spend two weeks treating underserved patients in a private‐ practice‐like setting. They go to one of the extramural clinics that comprise the school’s Statewide Network for Community Oral Health. All the students agree the experience is exceptional and invaluable. So much so, that many go back after their two‐ week stint to ϐinish treatment plans. “Our graduates tell us how much better off they are for having gone through the program,” says Nicholas DePinto, DMD, dental director at the Galloway site. “They say they are faster and more self‐sufϐicient than many of those they meet from other dental schools in postgraduate training. They have experience in a community setting and in treating a wide variety of patients, including many with special needs.” CODE II began when NJDS was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 2008. It is a spin‐off of the school’s CODE I program, piloted in 1994, which enables 11 seniors to spend their entire fourth year at an extramural site. Together both programs give all of NJDS’s soon‐to‐be‐graduates the opportunity to have a meaningful community‐based experience. Dr. DePinto explains that when the CODE II students arrive at the site, they go through a two‐hour orientation and then immediately begin seeing patients. They work with dental assistants in fully equipped, private operatories, where they see between four and eight patients a day. The students and patients are matched, based on the needs of both. For example, if a student has to perform two more root canals before graduation, he is assigned patients who need them. And seniors who are planning to go into a specialty, like periodontics, are scheduled to see as many patients as possible who need that type of work.
