I hope you have all been able to enjoy the unusually clement weather that has blessed us during early summer; it certainly helps to keep the spirits up. Having moved on from our spring events the committee’s attention focused on the recent Championship Show and accompanying health clinic which I am pleased to say ran smoothly. Thanks are due to our show secretary Rob Manley and the committee members and their families who attended. Thanks also for the donations of food, raffle and rosettes from members, which are much appreciated. We were lucky to have Mary Fish as our judge. She had some nice hounds to go over and awarded the dog CC and BIS to Lorraine Priestley’s CH Railside Pluto at Quickotic, with bitch CC and RBIS to Howie's Marksbury Wheedle von Jaegersmann, and Best Puppy to Gore, Almey & Dewey's Edenhill the Loyalist Soonipi. Hence Jago continued his remarkable successful run by gaining (I believe) his 29th CC and 20th BOB, so special congratulations are in order for Lorraine and Ian.

Unfortunately we received the sad news that two of the UK bloodhound fraternity have passed away since our last publication, Peter Smith and Janine Dymott and Jim Edwards from the USA. Please see the accompanying obituaries.

Rob and Ev are planning to hold another training day this year on August 26th so anyone needing a permit in time for the autumn trials should contact Rob to ensure space is available for them.

Some excellent show news, after a lengthy process Birgit Sluiter has been approved by the Kennel Club to judge the 2019 CH Show. It will be a nice change to have an overseas judge go over our hounds and we plan to include Champion classes for both dogs and bitches.

Our thoughts will now turn to the autumn with the trials and open show to look forward to. Enjoy the rest of the summer before the nights begin to draw in and thank you for continuing to support your Club.

Keith Long

Peter SmithPeter Smith, who moved to North Carolina a few years ago died on April 22nd. He will be

remembered by most of our older members for his involvement in thewell known Actaeon’s kennel with his wife Joyce (a former Bloodhound Club secretary). For many years they were based at Ringwood where they looked after Barry Bingham’s Barilla hounds and boarding kennels before retiring to Eccles. Peter was a very talented stage scenery designer and I have fond memories of his designing the Club breed stand for Crufts. The standard units provided by the Kennel Club are small and very ordinary but he devised ways of adding attractive usable space for us. I met him several times at a motorway service station as we decided on the design details, and to collect various elements as they were produced. The end result earned us breed stand competition winners in 1991 & 1993, and I am sure the only reason we didn’t win in 1992 was to give someoneelse a chance. The stand was head and shoulders above the others. The more studious among us will also remember the two volumes ofBritish Champions (1860 – 1991) that Peter produced in 1993/94. These have been invaluable

those who research the breed. Our thoughts go out to his wife JoAnn,family and friends.

Janine DymottMore recently we heard that Janine Dymott has died at a young

age. Although Janine had not been a member since 2011 manywill remember her attending trials and shows with Tony. She was good at craftwork and had a stand at our Millennium show selling handmade cards depicting bloodhounds. Although you may nothave known Janine that well, you would be unwittingly familiar with her bloodhounds which were used extensively for film work.

Probably most recently in the 39 Steps (with Rupert Penry-Jones). Our thoughts are with Tony, family and friends at this difficult time.

Health MattersThe number of owners requesting forms for hounds to be examined by their own vets’ has

tailed off over the past couple of years, and as it is a while since the last health clinic, we asked Rebecca Rowe along to the show to conduct a further one. The aim was to give a boost to the Bloodhound Health Assessment Scheme which is so important in helping us gain to data on the health of our breed, and to ultimately help get us removed from the category three register. The turnout was quite good with 12 hounds attending and the data gained will be used when we compile the annual health report to the Kennel Club. To compliment these, a further three forms completed by owners vets’ have also been submitted.

As reported earlier The Breed Health Plan contains only limited information from the UK, so the more information we can provide from our own studies the better. The second draft with additional information from both clubs has now been cleared for publication and although not perfect, is now at a reasonable starting point. As we gain more meaningful data the Plan can be adjusted to suit. Keith Long

JIM EDWARDS

Danbury NC James Wesley Edwards, Ph.D., died peacefully at home with his family on June 18, 2018. Born in Evansville, IN (1938); BA Evansville

College (1960); Ph.D. Utah State University (Zoology) (1964). He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs.

Laura Crossan Nicholson Edwards, of 38 years, who died on October 14, 2008. He was also

preceded in death by eleven Harley-Davidsons. Exceeding all of theexpectations in his life, he never caused physical, military, or political damage tohis homeland or to any land or peoples. As a Professor of Biology for 27 years (Salem College), he was most grateful forhis Zoology, Genetics, Human Genetics, and Evolution students, who at leasttolerated his humor. Additionally, his

contributions in the world of dogs, especiallyBloodhounds, are recorded, as are his

contributions, lasting a decade, to the AmericanKennel Club as Director - Judging Research and

Development/DNA Operations. His judgingassignments of many canine breeds included shows

throughout the United States; Stratford-Upon-Avon & Birmingham, England; the Netherlands; Bern, Switzerland; and Hangzhou and Beijing, China. He is survived by his son/family, FBI Special Agent Lance W. Edwards and Mrs. Melody Edwards (Sandy UT), grandchildren Wesley and Abigail; Mr. Sterling and Mrs. Erica Nicholson III (Danbury), grandson Mr. Sterling and Mrs. Stephanie Nicholson IV; Mrs. Taddy and Mr. David Nunn (Bluffton SC); Mrs. Sally and Mr. Arnie McCullers (Newport News VA), granddaughter Mrs. Riley Shaia (husband Dr. Wayne Shaia), and great-grandchildren Allison, Adam, and Nicholas (Richmond VA); grandson Mr. Ross and Mrs. Tara Bynam (Midland TX), and great-grandchildren Asher and Noah; and granddaughter Ms. Molly Bynam (Richmond). He greatly appreciated the continuing support of his family after the loss of his wife. He enjoyed a wonderfully pain-free life: arriving by C-section (his mother Letha Eunice led a similar life and died in 2005 at 109 years of age), professionally existing as an educator, retiring with specialties in family, purebred dogs, the derivatives of Pilsen Bohemia, and Harleys, and finally exiting painlessly without medical assistance when the spirits ran dry. Dr. Edwards frequently expressed his gratitude for all of his friends at the College, at the AKC, and especially in the world of purebred dogs – including a prince of this world, Mr. Wayne Cavanaugh. Continuing his lectures . . . he reminds us that Sir Bertrand Russell was correct . . . “When you die, you . . . “ (do your homework). Cheers. All the Best. His remains have been sent to the Medical School for the education of tomorrow’s doctors.Time to drink -- and celebrate your life!

TRIALSHere you will see Judge reports from earlier in the year. The next trials are organised by the ABB in the Pang Valley, country of the

Southern Shires Bloodhounds, in Hampshire. The ABB trials were last held there in Spring 2015, and this time their Novice starts on Monday 1st October. Their Senior is on Thursday 4th October, and is to be judged by Hermione Colby

The schedule will be available nearer the time at http://www.associationofbloodhoundbreeders.co.uk/

These are open to non-members for an extra £5, provided your hound has a Working Permit by September, and is over twelve months old on 1st October.

Winners in these stakes will be eligible for the next higher stake for the Club trials that start Sunday 21st October. Due to the Hunt, we can't start the Novice on Saturday so this will be held on Sunday 21st October, running to Senior on Wednesday. Senior will be judged on Wednesday by Rob Franks.

The Club's Autumn trials are being organised in the area of Somerset is known as Blackdown, east of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, north west of Ilminster, and north of the A303.

We have KC approval for the Special Stakes:Sunday 11th November: The Kelperland Trophy Stake to be held at

Geddington, Northants - Judged by Norman FosterSunday 27th January: The Millvery Trophy Stake to be held at

Ladybower, Derbyshire - Judged by Leonarda PogodzinskiWe also have the KC License for the Club's Championship trials next Spring. These are being organised by Colin Avery at Warnborough, Hampshire.

Novice starts Monday 25th February with Senior judged by David Scrivens on Thursday 28th, and Friday if required.

At its meeting in April the Club Committee agreed a couple of changes to the

Working Permit Procedure. This had been agreed between the ABB and the Club in the 1970s, so that a permit card issued by one bloodhound society was valid at the trials of both. In the interim, the changes came with some resistance by two members requesting stock tests. Rather than publish it in this Newsletter, at its June meeting, the Club Committee thought it best to confer with the ABB, to see if common wording could be agreed by both first.

Many thanks to the Bloodhound Club for inviting me to judge the senior stake. It’s always a pleasure to see the top hounds hunt.

My thanks to Keith Long and Jim Jennings for assisting, to the 2 line walkers Jo and Nick and to that landowners of the Grimsthorpe and Drummond Castle Trust for such a wonderful venue for the trials. The temperature was a bitter -2/-3°c plus windchill, and both hounds experienced blizzard conditions with a good covering of snow on their line. I’m not quite sure what crops were under the snow, but would hazard a guess at grass parkland, kale and plough.

Line 1 Houndsong Catillion handled by Duncan Robertson.(Line walked by Nick)

After a delayed start the hound hunted away from the flag, speaking to the line and making steady progress. After about 100yds we were hit by a snow blizzard with a strong tail wind. Hunting understandably slowed down but Malachi stuck to the line and finally, when the sun came out his progress did speed up. The line so far had been straight for ¾ of mile, then we passed some old farm buildings and crossed a large ditch, all of which was hunted accurately to the line, but by now, time was getting on and I had to leave for the next line. I was impressed by the way Duncan and Malachi worked together under difficult conditions. Keith stayed with them and latertold me the hound hunted well around the next large turn, but unfortunately missed a loop, ending up on the track where the cars were. At this point Duncan decided toretire.

The hound spoke true to the line so I awarded the Speaking Cup.

Line 2 Marksbury Panacea handled by Kevin Sands

(Line walked by Jo)

The hound dragged Kevin away from the flag, keen to get on with the job, making the first left hand turn and running the right hand side of a long ditch. The hound was very positive and quickly hunted his way across to some ponds. Here he negotiated a track, then took left turn, owning the line. All this was happening at a very fast pace and Kevin did well to keep up. The nextsweeping right turn was in snow covered kale, past an avenue of chestnut trees and Panacea seemed to love the kale and went even faster! We then came to a tricky right turn onto a track through a wood, the hound worked this out without trouble and hunted quickly into the next left turn. Then we were hit by a snow storm so bad we lost sight of Kevin and Panacea. The line clipped the left side of a line of trees , he overshot due to the tail wind and dire weather conditions, but within minutes Kevin brought him back and away he went again at a very fast pace. He continued to own the line over the last three fields, past a round plantation to a corner of the woodsand into the finish where the hound went straight into Jo for a good ID.

I am so impressed with how this hound hunted in such difficult conditions and the time of 1 hour 7 minutes was exceptional.

First prize and CC.

My thanks to the Bloodhound Club for inviting me to judge the Intermediate Stake at the Spring Trials on the Grimsthorpe Castle Estate in Lincolnshire. I was lucky to have the advice and experience of Rob Franks as my assistant and my niece, Sarah came along as an observer.

Grimsthorpe is a great venue for the trials, a well maintained estate with undulating parkland, mixed farmland, copses and tracks (and closed to the public). The challenge came from the weather - a bitter cold wind from the east bringing in flurries of horizontal snow. It looked as though the scenting could be seriously compromised, but our contestants were made of sterner stuff, resolved and determined, in true bloodhound fashion, to have a go.

The convoy of spectators gathered by the lake where geese congregated noisily to socialise and feed.

Ch. Trailfinder Kitchener handled by Rob Manley was first off. The route snaked like a wonky three leafed clover, back towards the start forming the first loop then, skirting a prominent copse and back out towards the tree -line and crossing a track following the edge of a wood to form the third leaf by looping back towards the lake. Kitchener was eager to go and settled quickly to the line pulling confidently on his leash and towing the handler along. They covered the first part of the loop of the line correctly but over shot the bend on the return missing out the loop around the copse. They headed down towards the spectators but the handler could see that this was wrong and brought the hound back up to the wood and hunted in to identify well. The line was completed in about 35 minutes which shows how much of the line was missed. I think considering the strong wind the loops were probably too narrow to be hunted with any precision. An enthusiastic and dedicated hound and credit to the handler for keeping up.

Next hound off was Sanft Dawn handled by Nick Sutcliffe. This line set off along the side ofthe lake into a large loop and back to cross the lake at a weir and out into a second loop against the line of a wood and back to a finish at the lake. A dark grey snow cloudrolled over us as we watched Dawn zig-zag in the drifted snow. She busied herself at her toilet a drop here and again and a bit more. Meanwhile the cloud opened up and

snow fell thick and fast. The wind drove the snow horizontally until it was difficult to look directly into it. Dawn trolled deeper from the flags and out of our view as the land fell away. We could hear Nick singing encouragement to her and he too move out of sight as the blizzard enveloped them. Slow progress was being made and I had to leave to get to the next line so Rob, my valiant assistant, volunteered to follow into the storm like a Captain Oates saying “ I maybe some time…

Rob later reported that the best bit of the line was yet to be and Dawn eventually picked up speed and completed her line with a classic jump up identification.

An enthusiastic Sanft Jaolene handled by Graham Cook was off to a fast start tugging on her leash and down past her flags andup the slope spot on the trail with the cold wind following her. At the top of the slope where the line was more exposed to the bitter cold wind the Jaolene turned into a strip of trees and a ditch which thehandler recognised as unlikely and brought her back to where he thought she last owned the line. Laid on again she took to the right into a large field. The line in fact went to the left but she certainly seemed to be hunting and was soon across the field along the headland. There were deer and hares around and thiscould have been her downfall. She made animpressive run up to a farm and across tracks despite the snow falling and darkening sky. It was time to get to the next line and we were pleased to see Jo the manager’s car coming to rescue us with the good news that Rob had started the next line off on time.

Marksbury Humility, handled by Christine Green, was making steady progress on her line when we caught up with her. We joinedRob just as Humility came to a check and Christine was trying to move her on. We waited as Humility came back again almost shrugging her shoulders as if to say “Nothing there , Mum” Head up and looking about she came up to the judges to tell us too. Try again- further on….. But to no avail. Had the wind not been so fierce and cold she may have been persuaded forward but the time had past she had lost concentration and interest. Christine decided to withdraw.

After a very welcome lunch we were ready for the last line of the day.Clearwater’ Emerald Sanft handled by Nick Sutcliffe were waiting at the flags, the

cold wind still blowing up a chill. Emerald started slowly making a methodical cast the wind coming from behind and gentle encouragement from Nick. The first loop

was enclosed by plantation and a ride and she followed the line accurately crossing the ride at thepoint of the wood and curving out into a second loop. The line turned southward along side thewood into the parkland and turning into the wind crossing a track and heading into the scrub to twist again towards the north and more open land then snaking back and crossing over another trackinto the deer park. They were gaining speed and confidence so Rob followed closely whilst Sarahand I took a short cut towards the finish to capture the identification. In the next field she lost the trailand hit the heel line but corrected herself and eventually made her way to the finish. The runner

had wisely chosen a good viewing point with a bit of shelter from straw rolls so we could watch the final

100 yards . This was a sparse and exposed stretch which Emerald worked slowly but accurately right up to the end but there was no overt greeting for the quarry.

Very impressive performances from each of the hounds considering the weather conditions. I had expected that any scent would have been blown away in the ice cold wind but these hounds had shown that there was still something there for them to follow. Also in human experience smells are reduced by the cold and released by the heat. So all this is difficult to explain. Scent remains fascinating mystery and the relationship between hound and handler is magical.

The prizes awarded were;1st Prize and Phil Stendela Memorial Trophy ;Clearwater’ Emerald Sanft 2nd Prize and Rescoria Trophy ; Sanft Dawn3rd Prize; Trailfinder KitchenerKevin Milligan Memorial Cup for best identification ; Sanft

Dawn.

Thank you to Rob Franks for his company and comments, to Keith Long and Jo Franks for their planning preparation and smooth running of the stake and to the contestants who made it all worthwhile.

We were privileged to hold the stake on the land of Ted Barclay, of the Barclay family, which has done so much to support Bloodhound Trials over the years. The land is arable, heavy clay, seriously clinging – I brought quite a lot of it back to Yorkshire on my boots! It was very wet underfoot and that, combined with a very mild day with a strong wind, made scenting very difficult.

Sadly, one of the two contestants, Joy and Graham Cook’s Clarence, could not come, having been operated on for bloat two days previously. Let’s hope next year, Clarence. The remaining contestant, Houndsong Catillion, better known as Malachi, had travelled all the way down from Cheshire with Duncan Robertson. There was a good turnout of spectators, including some new puppy owners who I hope will be the contestants of the future at Trials.

The line was walked with pinpoint accuracy by Ian Henderson (not easy in the dead of night) and was U shaped, with the outward leg heading directly north and the return element roughly parallel. A strong wind blew over the line from SSW, causing what scent there was to be blown about.

Malachi is a top class hound with the two essential attributes of drive, the urge to find scent, and nose, the ability to pick up even faint traces of scent. To these attributes can be added the priceless quality of voice; he speaks true when he finds the line and has one of the best voices I have ever heard in a Bloodhound. It is truly thrilling to see him turn onto a small patch of scent, throw up his head to speak to acknowledge the line and then drive on.

The line started behind the farmyard and went out on the newly seeded field, parallelwith a stretch of woodland. A large number of deer slots testified toa thriving local population of deer. Some were very fresh but Mally didn’t bother with them. He went off from the flags but right from the start, with the wind blowing the scent away from him, he washaving to cast and cast for very littlereturn. He must have covered most of the field in his casting but could find little. At one point I was standing on the runner’s footprints in the plough and found

one with Mally’s pawprint superimposed on top. Even when bang on the actual foot line he could not find any scent. So it was even more meritorious when he completely ignored a hare which got up on the line – as we allknow, it is easy enough to keep hounds steady when they are on a strong scent; it is when scent is poor that they can get distracted.

In spite of the almost complete lack of scent Duncan and the hound made slow progress in the generaldirection of the line, Duncan’s longhandling experience showing in the way he trusted the hound and allowed him to cast freely. However, after a mile it was obvious that both hound and handler were at a loss and Duncan very sensibly decided not to let the hound wear himself out for no return, and asked for guidance to bring the hound in. In fact, they had reached the point where the line turned and started to return, this time into the wind, and, once the turn had been made and the hound was working into the wind, matters improved and he was able to pick up enough snatches of the line to give the general direction. Scent was strongest at the crossing points from one field to the next and Mally accurately indicated these crossings and spoke to the scent there.

In the last field the hound spoke as we crossed into it and picked up a faint line. Casting and casting he found patches of scent, speaking true every time he found, and worked his way into his runner in just over 2 hours.

Very sadly, I was unable to award the trophy. Although the hound had worked and worked and showed himself steady with game, there just wasn’t the scent for him to own enough of the line to award the trophy. But for those of you wanting to watch a top class hound in operation, you could do no better than to follow Mally’s line when he competes at Trials.

My thanks to my assistant, Jill Harrington, whose boots seemed to acquire even more mud than mine did! And of course, to the Averys and the Millers who sponsor this trophy and make it such a special day in the Bloodhound calendar.

Judges report – Senior Stake Chesham 24th October 2017First of all I would like to thank the Bloodhound Club for inviting me. It’s always a pleasure to

judge at trials, and I think it’s an honour to be asked to judge the Senior Stake in the homeland of Trials as we know it.

Also a word of thanks to my assistants, Ian Henderson and Rob Franks, for their pleasant company and much appreciated support. And thank you owners and handlers, for entering and making this day possible.

Like almost all week, the weather was dominated by a cold wind blowing across the mostly barren fields, having a lot of influence on the scent.

The first line started on the top of a sloping field near King’s Ash Farm, going south in a double S-shape to end up at Strawberryhill Farm. Kevin Sands and Marksbury Panacea had a nice start at 08:30. The hound did a lot of casting in the first field, not surprising in these conditions. They seemed to pick it up, but ended up to low in this large field, and kept going along the lower hedge, while the line was much higher, nearer to the road. I almost had to call them back, because they were going towards the finish, but the handler saw us and came up the slope to the roadcrossing. After that, there was very slow progress in the next field; the hound seemed to be more interested in a Landrover, parked in an gap in the hedge along the road. Finally they crossed this field, went through the opposite hedge too low, into the wrong field. Moving along a hedge, and at the end of this hedge turning to the right, they managed to pick up the line again, thus cutting of a large chunk of the second loop of the line.

They went on very well, following the line around the wood, but then went off the line again , crossing the next hedge too low, went to the right hand side of the field, crossed the line, but went on to the end of this field, to come back down on the other side of the hedge. In this field, they picked up the line again, followed it correctly through this field and into the last field, but went up too high against the wind to the left side of the field, and walked into the finish, with no initial identification (the hound identified after some encouraging from the handler), in 1 hour.

The second line started near a crossroad, made a large loop around Baldwin’s Wood to the west, and then turned down again towards Arrewig Lane, and up again to finish at Old Brun’s Farm. Graham Cook and Rache Centurion made a nice, fast start at 10:00, casting well on the line, but then the hound went too far to the left in this field, and even left the field to riot on the road. Graham took him back into the field and they went along towards the gap where the line left this first field. The hound casted up the next field, more or less around the line, went a bit too far to the right but came back, found the line again, went through the hedge, turned right in the next small field and went correctly into the next big field. Insteadof going around this field however, they stayed on the left, went into the next field and found the roadcrossing, after skipping a large loop of the line.

The hound hunted well in the field after the roadcrossing, took the turn in the next field a bit too tight, and didn’t really hunt in that field. They went up to the road, crossed the hedge in the wrong place, but regained the line and showed some good hunting in the second last long field. Through the gap into the last field, we feared the team would turn right straight to the finish, but they went left to the hedge, and turned back from there to go straight to the line-up, skipping the loop in

Page 23: From the Chairman June 2018 - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com · 1 Cover by Farlap 2 Houndseeker Ad 3 From the Chairman 4 Health Matters 4-5 Obituaries 6-9 Club Ch Show Report 10-11 Ch

the last field. There was no real identification, after 1 hour 15 minutes. The third line on the map looked like a giant three-leaf clover around Longcroft on Shire Lane,

with a very large loop in the first two fields. Duncan Robertson and Houndsong Catilleon started at 11:35. The hound was speaking at the start, casting in front of the flag and moving along the line towards the corner of a small wood.Duncan called the hound off the line and took him into the first field, waiting there for the hound to find the line again. After some time he followed the hound towards the gap in the hedge next to the small wood mentioned before. The hound marked the line in the gap, but they went into the first field again along the right hand hedge, with the hound walking in front of the handler. At the end of this huge field, they went left, more or less where the line came out of thesecond field. About halfway, they went into the field again, looped left towards the hedge, crossing their own tracks, and went through the middle of the second field to the far end of this field, where they hit the line again. Slowly progressing, they followed the line, until they came at the point where the line went into the first field again. There they left the field and went onto a track, reappearing near the far corner of this first field. By this time they had spent 55 minutes to get through the first two fields, and I had to leave them to go to the next start. Rob took over from me, and he told me Duncan asked for the map there. I don’t know if the hound saw the map as well, but Rob told me that he hunted well on the line from there, speaking on the line.

Duncan told me afterwards that he didn’t think his hound was on the line from the start, because the hound didn’t speak after the flag.

Line number four started at Oak Lane, to go south with three large loops, finishing at Ashotts Lane near Chartridge Lodge. Matt Price and Monty Truffe Médiévale made a fast start at 13:00, went down the field on the wrong side, probably due to the windy conditions. Coming out of this narrow first field, they struggled in the second, large field. Finally they went on in more or

less the right direction, but the hound seemed to find something very smelly in the corner of the field, and hated to be taken away from there. They went on along the hedge, crossed the line without noticing it, went through a gate into a footpath, came back, and from there they went into the correct field, more or less following the line, but without any signs of hunting. About halfway the line, when we were getting bored following a hound that didn’t hunt, a deer got up in front of the hound, and the hound rioted on this deer. Suddenly a lot of action and excitement, with the judges interfering between the

deer and the hound. The hound was walked into the finish, without an identification, in 1 hour 10 minutes.

All in all, the hunting was not very good, with all hounds showing some working on the line, but also skipping large parts of it. I think the strong cold wind and the mostly barren fields did not make for good hunting conditions. I was very glad, however, to give Duncan and his hound the Pogodzinski Trophy for the hound speaking best to the line.

Thank you again! This day just proved that you can have an enjoyable day even when the hunting is not very good. Hope to see all of you again soon! Jan Grit Judge

Extracts from Kennel Club Breed Record Supplement AV1

The Kennel Club published its registrations quarterly, and supplies its breed societies with copies. With few exceptions, records for Bloodhounds have been included in our Newsletters over the years.

These Breed Record Supplements also include results of Health Tests, though these rarely include Bloodhounds. The edition published in February also includes a summary of the previous year, in comparison to previous years. For instance tables of statistics. There were 88 registrations recorded in 2017, as compared with 53 in 2016, and was the highest ten years: 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 114 60 55 59 50 51 74 77 53 88 .

Note that the entries in BRS AV1 include hounds born before 2018, and the table of yearly summaries refers to the date of registration not the date of birth.

The figures for registrations includes imports, and a steady flow of imported bloodhounds has contributed to the recent rise. These registrations have the abbreviation "IMP" after their name, with country of origin such as (imp, USA) or (imp, Can), where the country has their own kennel club registration system. The countries of Europe fall under the auspices of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, FCI, and the UK Kennel Club accepts these imports without restrictions.

An exception arouse in 2012, because of an import from Germany, which had a registration body independent of the FCI. The owner of a bloodhound import under this system had difficulties with registration here. Through the efforts of Leonarda Pogodzinski, the Kennel Club accepted the registration of this bloodhound, but besides the (imp,Deu) the name was post-fixed with three asterixes. This bloodhound subsequently gained three CC and became Ch. Khaled Purgatorio at Harvidene *** (imp,Deu)

The Kennel Club applies two asterixes to the first generation offspring, which in turn has one asterix for the next generation. The asterix of the recent Best Veteran and Reserve Best Bitch at our Championship Show, Ch. Houndsong Contradenza* and the Kelperland winner Houndsong Catillion*, dates back the the first outcross accepted by the KC in decades, also championed by Leonarda Pogodzinski.

This was a litter of the clean boot pack Readyfields Bloodhounds, and the first generation appeared in show rings under the Kingshart affix, notably Ch. Kingshart Countryman**. from Readyfields Rosie of Kingshart*** whose brother Readyfields Romper*** gave us Ch. Aspencade Eclipse of Kingshart** who sired the Kingshart M litter and Kingshart Middleman* appears as a sire in the BRS below.

The other source of the asterixes was another outcross, this time introduced to the KC registry by Leo in 2017 from the Four Shires Bloodhounds. Since "Four Shires" is registered with the Masters of Draghounds and Bloodhounds Association, the KC accepted the affix Quattroshire. We see in BRS AV1, the first generation for this outcross, with the Quattroshire G and H puppies marked **.

The entries for Bloodhounds published in May 2018 were as follows: . . . . . NS

I would like to thank the exhibitors for entering under me. It is always an honour to judge Bloodhounds. They have been my life for thirty years and In that time there have been many changes. Some good, some bad.

I would like to congratulate breeders and owners for the lovely bloodhounds I judged yesterday. Everyone sweet tempered, each had excellent clear eyes, each was showing in super clean condition. The puppies behaved like puppies as they should.

There have been times in the past when I have been quite shocked by what is being bred. We have very few breeders now but today they were all of a high standard.

Minor Puppy Dog 1 entered1. Cudlip’s Harvidene Discovery. A well grown on 7 month old b/t puppy. Obviously not the

full picture yet but exactly how he should be at his age. Beautiful refined skull, lovely length. He is surely destined for top honours. He gave his young handler a hard time but she coped well.

Puppy Dog, Junior Dog .No entries Post Graduate Dog 1 entered.1 Absent Limit Dog 1 entered1. Shaw- Browne’s Kingshart Middleman. A well boned well proportioned Blanket B/T. This

boy has super bone and a lovely correct head. He just moved slightly wide from the rear today.Open Dog 3 entered1. Cudlip’s Harvidene in the Getto. DCC. The new Contender. The new Kid on the block.

This b/t dog is lovely. His skull shape, furnishings, back length, top line..Everything about him is beautiful. He represents the Bloodhound Standard for a Dog Bloodhound . I do not think he gave his handler an easy ride..but I like how he sparkles with life.

2. Priestley’s Ch Railside Pluto at Quikotic. RDCC. Pluto and at least two of his litter mates show what good breeding really is. Pluto is a wonderful b/t dog from his lovely head, pleasing outline, elastic gait to his easy laid back manner. Being second to the DCC winner does not detract from the greatness of this dog. In my honest opinion he could still win the DCC anywhere but my winner just had the edge in that undefinable sparkle.

3. Jones’ Harvidene Devil in Disguise . A red dog with splendid bone and moving truly. His head could be slightly more refined but he looks like a proper bloodhound..he was unlucky to meet 1 and 2.

Veteran Dog, Minor Puppy Bitch No entries Puppy Bitch 1 entered1. Rowland’s Harvidene Mercedes at Castledee. A b/t very feminine puppy bitch. Quite mature

for a young puppy...she responded well to her handler, I liked her very much such a sweet expression. BP.

Junior Bitch 2 entered 1 Absent

1. Crabtree’s Maghullpaws Everest. B/t 14 months old. Always Interesting to see the difference in growth in different breeding. This pretty little girl is much slower to mature than either of today’s puppies and there is nothing wrong with that. She has a real bond with her owner and enjoyed her day out. Nice eyes, pleasing movement.

Post Graduate Bitch. No entries Limit Bitch 1 entered1. Marksbury Wheedle Von Jaegersmann. A nice b/t bitch with very nice angulation and top

line. Moves very well. Being slightly deeper in body would complete the picture for me.Open Bitch 3 entered1. Cudlip’s Harvidene Tender. BCC. BOB. b/t litter sister of my DCC winner .This is the best bitch I have seen in a very long time. She makes my heart race. She is just

lovely. Her head is just fabulous and so is the rest of her. As her brother represents the breed Standard for a Dog, in my opinion this Bitch represents the breed standard for a Bitch.

2. Howie’s Ch Marksbury Hessie. RBCC. B/t bitch. I have admired this girl before and going over her was not a let down. Really super bitch. Very unlucky to meet 1. It is nice to see such nice bitches in our breed again.3. Shaw-Browne’s Kingshart Roses Mimic. Eileen Peers (Cilgwri Bloodhounds)

Anglesey Canine Society. 5th May 21018. Bloodhound.

Thank you for the Anglesey Canine Society for inviting me to judge Bloodhounds. This was a new breed added to the classes at the show, after being asked to be added, so I hope it proved a success and they may continue to include Bloodhounds.

We are losing open show classes and these are a good place for judges to gain the numbers need to crawl up the judging list and for exhibitors to gain experience and practice with new hounds.

Thank you to my steward who bravely battled the wind as the ring was moved outside… didn’t lose to many things to the wind.

Also thank you to ‘The Bloodhound Club’ for the BOB, RBOB and BP rosettes, they were well received.

And a big thank you to the exhibitors for embracing a new show and turning up on the day for me to go over their hounds hope they thought the show was a nice venue and enjoyed the day.

face and type. Amble bone without being too heavy and maintaining that feminine air. Good bend to stifle, little straight in the chest, but hounds can change so much between 6 months and three years. In excellent condition. Good top line when standing and on the move. Just needs to settle in the ring, that will come with time and experience as only a baby. Very Happy to award Best Puppy.

KEEPING TRACKWe are currently in the midst of the long and painful process of buying a new home. We have

finally completed the “chain”, and found our lovely new bungalow cottage with land for the houndies. Now we are just stuck in the seemingly never ending legal process… As one can imagine, we have not had much time to spare since we put our house on the market at the end of last year. All the constant cleaning, gardening, and driving around the countryside looking for our new home has nearly killed us! Fortunately, I still have a lot of previous uncovered news, making this the perfect time to fully catch up with everything.

I begin these notes with the very sad news that Janine Dymott passed away in May. Janine and her husband Tony used to both hunt and show their hounds until they moved to the Isle of Wight some years ago. I was told that Janine had been ill for the past eighteen months due to her immune system not working properly, possibly caused by cancer. She spent long periods of time in hospital. After receiving new bone marrow cells six weeks ago, she seemed to begin to recover, but most sadly, it did not cure her. Janine was a lovely person and an excellent artist. Her special

a good top line and bend to stifle producing a strong profile, when standing. Coat in excellent condition, with good muscle developing, good depth and width of chest.

Good tail carriage when moving, moved with purpose a little unsettled at first but got better the more she moved. but needs tosettle down in the ring, this will come with time and experience. Both hound and handler will get more confident the more they exhibit and relax. Glad to award Best Bitch and Reserve Best inbreed.

2nd- Rowlands Castledee Secret Love.12 month old Black and tan, Correct bite good clean eyes, Coat in good condition and muscle

tone developing nicely. Again a nice feminine hound. Stood well giving a good profile, but didn’t have the strong profile of 1, close thing between the two, top line not a good as 1. But again hounds change so much at the year plus stage. Good feet, Good strength and depth to chest, helping the hound to move well, with drive, but a little unsettled on the move. But again a youngster and time and experience will help sort that out.

Open Dog 2 Entered – 1 absent1st Jones’- Harvidene Devil in Disguise.3 years old Red hound. Good strong masculine hound. Stands

with confidence, with ring presence and a strong profile but not over exaggerated. Stands over a good amount of ground. Good clean eyes, good length to leathers and correct bite. Coat in good condition good tight feet. Well-muscled helping the hound move with strength, power and drive on a nice loose lead, making it all look effortless, looks good standing and on the move. A pleasure to award Best dog and BOB..

Bloodhound greeting cards, which were often on display at our club shows, were amazing to say the least. She will be sorely missed. We send our sincere condolences to Tony and their family. Our thoughts are with you. I would like to thank Fiona Mackenzie and Duncan Robertson for letting me know.

From the 9th to the 13th of October 2017 the American Bloodhound Club held their annual ABC National Speciality week followed by the Northwest Regional Specialty on the 14th. It was held at the Silo Inn, Ocean Shores in Washington. It is always a wonderful week of Mantrailing, the Futurity to show off the breeders’ latest youngsters, Rally, Obedience, Junior Showmanship, Junior and Veteran Sweepstakes, Puppy Match, the glamorous Top Twenty Invitational, and of course the Breed competition. The fun that is had at this event cannot be described unless one attends it. Hounds and owners alike have a most enjoyable time. I will not be able to cover all the results but here are the highlights.

On the Mantrailing front, seven new awards were won. On the show front, the Futurity judge Wendy Musgrove awarded Best Puppy to Skipton’s Time And Treasure, bred and owned by Zac & Heather Helmer, and BOS to Nunya’s Let Her Work Like a Charm, bred by Stacey Poler, Yu Illarionova, Eva Dunkel, and owned by Janis Hardy, Sheri Whetstine, & Sarah Broom. The Best Junior In Futurity and the Grand Futurity Winner was awarded to Flessner’s Oops I Did It Again. She was bred and is owned by Bryan & Chris Flessner and Heather & Zac Helmer.

Judge Ellen Kroll awarded The Grand Puppy Sweepstakes Winner to the Junior Dog GCh Cornerstone’s Wyatt Earp. He was bred and is owned by Beth and Christine Vanselous, and is also owned by Marylou Olszewski. The same judge awarded Shirley VanCamp, Susan Carter & Heather Helmer’s GCh Ch Flessner’s International S’cess MTI Best Veteran in Sweepstakes, and he was bred by Bryan & Chris Flessner and Heather Helmer.

Camille McArdle judged the National and she awarded to GCh Cornerstone’s Wyatt Earp, and Best Of Opposite Sex to GCh Ch Flessner’s International Snapshot, bred by Chris & Bryan Flessner and owned by Chris Flessner, Heather Helmer, Susan M Carter & Shirley Van Camp.

Susan & John Hamil’s MBIS/MBISS Quiet Creeks Limited Edition won the Top Twenty Invitational, Select Dog ABC 2017, and Best of Breed at the Pacific Rim Regional Speciality. Many congratulations to all the winners above.

Ms Kathy A Forbes judged bloodhounds and she awarded Best of Breed to Susan Lacroix Hamil’s (owner / breeder) GCHG Ch Quiet Creek’s Limited Edition. Shelise Lientz’s Elphaba Cooter, that was bred by Beth Vanselous and Carla Blanchard, won Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex. Susan Carter, Shirley Van Camp & Heather Helmer’s GCHP Ch Flessner’s International S’Cess bred by Bryan & Chris Flessner was awarded Select Dog and Best Bred by Exhibitor in Breed / Variety. He went on to win third place in the Bred by Exhibitor Hound Group. Beth Vanselous, Mary Lou Olszewski (both owner / breeder) & Christine Vans’ GCH Ch Cornerstone’s Wyatt Earp received a first Award of Excellence. Many congratulations to all the winners above.

We spent a lovely day last this past summer when my dear Bloodhound friend Sarah Duke-Norris of Huntersinn Bloodhounds and her partner, Keith came to visit us whilst on holiday from South Africa. It was as if Sarah and I had never been apart and the afternoon passed far too quickly. Many of our senior Bloodhound members may well remember her. Sarah and I met in the very early 80’s when I travelled down to Durban to rescue one of my puppies, called Sniffer, from my very first litter. We had entered my SA Ch Red (I knew nothing about kennel names with that litter) in one of the Durban all breed championship show-weekends. Red was actually

liver and tan, but as a beginner I had registered her as a red instead of a liver and tan until I found out she was actually a liver. I had to change her registration details with the South African Kennel Union. They took it very well due to the fact that all the Bloodhound books I owned at that time were only in black and white and she was the first liver and tan to be born in South Africa.

A week before the Durban shows I received a frantic call from one of my show puppy owners in Durban. Lesley told me about Sniffer’s plight and I organised with her owners, who I did not know as she had been sold on without my knowledge, to take her back. It was after that experience that I had a contract drawn up requiring all my puppy buyers to contact me first if they needed to re-home their hound so it could be returned to me, and ever since then this has worked like a charm.

When we went to collect Sniffer she was locked in a tiny concrete courtyard, which was boiling hot! Durban is far hotter than Pretoria as it has a very humid tropical climate and it is a wonder that she did not die from heat stroke. She would have done so if it had been during the summer months. The winter average temperature in Durban is around 24 degrees Celsius. Sniffer was a lovely black blanket but was in an awful state and covered from head to foot in ticks. It was just lucky that none of those of ticks were of the killer type. Lesley and I were horrified so once Sniffer was in my car and I had her registration papers in my hands, we let them know how we felt about their treatment of her. It took veterinary treatment and many months of patient work to help poor Sniffer because she was afraid of people due to her awful experiences. In the end she became a happy champion show hound and search & rescue hound like her sister, Red. She went on to produce my first liver blanket that in turn became a top-winning hound in his day.

But I digress. I first met Sarah and her hounds at the shows. She had started with Bloodhounds at about the same time as me in the late 70’s. We immediately became firm friends and spent many great times together visiting each other with our hounds. We were able to spend much more time together in the early 90’s when their family moved to Johannesburg for a few years due to her ex-husband’s work. It was indeed very sad for us both when his term in Johannesburg ended and they returned to Durban. Sarah also ran the Durban branch of our Bloodhound Rescue for many years and joined our SA Bloodhound Club committee whilst living in Johannesburg. She bred some lovely litters and was very active in the breed.

In the early 80’s Sarah imported a lovely hound from the UK, though sadly I cannot remember his name or kennel, and later SA Ch Railside Bracken of Huntersinn from Tony and Margaret Higginbottom. My first import in the early 80’s was SA Ch Gloverndale Pretender of Scentall from Gloria and Richard Bird in the UK. These imports did much good for the breed in South Africa. Sadly, Sarah has not had Bloodhounds for a while now but she was over the moon with our four and so misses not having any. We spent a wonderful afternoon reminiscing and had many laughs. She hopes to visit us again in the future as her family still live here, which we look forward to.

Many thanks again to my contributors who help me immensely to write both “Keeping Track” and my Our Dogs Weekly Bloodhound breed note column. I must apologise in advance to all my readers that my next article for the Autumn Edition Newsletter may not be as long as this one due to our house move. Fortunately, I already have prepared part of that piece and if I have the time, hope to add to it before the autumn deadline. See you then.
