I have always thought of the pantry being a full servicefacility with the giving out of pet food as well as having a nurse to do blood pressure checking. Recently, we have had a representative from Sprintcellphone carrier giving out a free phone to those who qualified. The operation of the pantry involves the work of many volunteers beyond the actual pantry hours on Thursdays. Volunteers are present to help in receiving food on Wednesday mornings. Then, in the afternoon volunteers are present to make up the boxes which provides approximately half of the food a client receives. We have had students from Stagg High School assist in this work who needed their community service hours. I noticed that nine people from Savior Divine have signed up to help at the Chicago Food De- pository in Chicago. For the hours they volunteer there, the pantry receives credit toward our monthly delivery of food, which comes on the first Tuesday of the month. Pastor Marty

“Continuing Our Journey”

Families Blessed with Toys from Elsie’s Pantry

This year Elsie’s Food Pantry once again was able to give out toys to families with children. A thank you to those from Savior Divine who contributed to this cause. Also, the number of clients coming to the pantry has been on the rise. On November 21, 101 clients came for food. The pan-try has now surpassed 88,000 in the number of clients served since the pantry’s inception.

I have always thought of the pantry being a “full service” facility with the giving out of pet food as well as having a nurse to do blood pressure checking. Recently, we have had a representative from Sprint™ cellphone carrier giving out a free phone to those who qualified.

I noticed that nine people from Savior Divine have signed up to help at the Chicago Food De-pository in Chicago. For the hours they volunteer there, the pantry receives credit toward our monthly delivery of food, which comes on the first Tuesday of the month.

Reserve and Repair and Replace Funds

We are still in need of your special donations to these funds. Right now our finances are doing good thanks to special offerings from Thanksgiving and Christmas, but lat-er on in the new year we will need our reserve fund to help keep our financial com-mitments current. Also, if any repairs are needed, the repair and replace fund will help with those.

Pledges for 2020

We received 22 pledges totaling $55,658/yr. to the general fund and $3,920/yr. to the reserve fund. Thank you for your faithful support.

Terry LeGrand, Financial Secretary

Please read on…

On Sunday, 12/22/19, I sat there and watched people coming in and greeting each other with joy and love. We are such a wonderful, loving congregation. This is so spe-cial. I, myself have experienced this love and caring and it strengthens me for the week ahead. So, I want to wish all of you a Happy New Year and I want to tell you how special you are. God bless you.

Here Is A Riddle To Think About This Month (Answer To Come Next Month).

What does a Christmas tree eat with?

Here Is The Answer To Last Month's Riddle.

Why did the conductor let the turkey join the band?

Answer: He had his own drumsticks.

Why do we see a hymnal coming out of the chair?

A number of weeks ago we were given information on what to do in a hostile en-vironment situation. One of the important instructions that were given to us was to distract the person creating the problem. It was suggested to us that if we had the hymnals partially pulled out, we could more easily get to them to throw or just hit the aggressor with them, thereby giving people time to flea or even chase the person away.

It is scary to not find a sense of peace when you are worshiping and honoring our Lord, but the times have changed and we need to be prepared for the unu-sual and the dangerous.

The ushers are taking attendance each week in case we have to leave the building to go to a safe place. This attendance sheet would let us know if anyone is still in the building. They are also lock-ing the door again as a precaution to watch in case someone is acting in a suspicious manner.

Telephone Calling Service for Worship Cancellation

We are now in the winter season and due to any strong inclement weather, it may be necessary to cancel our Sunday worship. A tel-ephone tree has been set up to notify people either on Saturday or early Sunday morning that there will be no worship. If you have not received a call from our telephone tree in the past and would like to be put in our system, please leave your phone number at the church office.

Worship to Include a Children’s Sermon

Linda Good will be giving children’s sermons on the first Sunday of the month. Bring your kids, nieces, nephews and grandkids for their special time in the worship service.

Donating Devotional Booklets

We now know of a person who collects already-read devotional booklets and sends them to a mission for people that do not have access to these books. If you have books from “Christ in Our Home”, “Our Daily Bread’, “Morning With Jesus”, or others like that, you can bring them to church and put them in the basket marked for those items. By doing this we spread the devotions in these books to others outside of our church family.

Support our Food Pantry by Helping at the Chicago Food Depository

By donating hours of service for one day at the Chicago Food De-pository, we can get credit toward purchasing food for Elsie’s Pan-try. A few years ago, several members from the congregation did participate and this did help our pantry. You can find information about this organization at www.chicagosfoodbank.org.

Nine people so far have signed up to spend a few hours one day volunteering at the Chicago Food Depository in Chicago. This would be an excellent opportunity to experience the magnificent opera-tion that goes on at this huge facility. If you desire to go, please sign the sheet in the living room ar-ea. The date for actual volunteering is still to be determined.

Lots of Toys

Thanks to all those that donated toys for our food pantry clients.

You made it possible for these children to have a surprise at Christmas that they probably would not of had except for your generosity.
