From Sue New Shade Sail

During the holidays, we had our shade sail installed over the quadrangle. This will make a noticeable difference to the temperature in this space, particularly in the afternoons. Therefore, assemblies during those very hot summer days will be possible now. The sail operates electronically and retracts quickly and efficiently. The quadrangle will be now more readily available for learning activities right through the year. Previously we have often conducted science activities and experiments on the asphalt here but these are weather dependent. Now we will be able to utilise this space regularly for science, maths and activities. The school successfully applied for a shade grant last

year and received $25,000 towards this project. We have added $17,000, which is money well spent. Painting During the holidays and the early part of this term, three areas of the school were repainted: the external windows and trims on the northern side of the main building the external windows and trims on the eastern end of the quadrangle the entrance and back foyer on the eastern side of the main building. These areas are now looking refreshed and much improved.

The focus on Saturday was ‘messy space’ at the south-western corner of our yard. Our three dads Chris Mitchell, Tremayne Todd and Vlas Gavnoudias appeared to be having great fun creating our messy space; they were also working very hard in freezing cold conditions! This project will be brought to fruition over three weeks with the experts and equipment on deck for the first two Saturdays and then a working bee where community involvement will be very welcome on the final Saturday. My sincere thanks go to Chris, Tremayne and Vlas for their expertise, time, effort and support shown for our school last Saturday. I am well aware that many children are very excited and genuinely looking forward to seeing what the messy space will look like, so am I! This space will not be available for children’s play until it is completed. New Double Storey Classroom We are hoping to receive a double storey (Mod 10) classroom in the near future; this will replace one of the existing Mod 5 portables. Once on site, the classroom will accommodate four grades. This will comfortably meet our requirements for 2018. We expect to hear news on this topic very shortly. Enrolments at Hampton Recently our Leadership Team, Education Committee and School Council have carefully considered the Hampton Primary School Enrolment Policy. We have had some interesting discussions on this topic. The revised policy will be uploaded to the school’s website very shortly. This policy will be reviewed annually. Please note the following points: we are determined to ensure fairness and equity are reflected in our enrolment policy and

actions we are equally determined to protect and maintain the facilities and play spaces currently

available importantly, we are adamant that the school ethos and community spirit is respected and

protected.

Therefore, the enactment of the HPS Enrolment Policy will mean: the current enrolment zone will be strictly observed details and addresses will be meticulously checked at enrolment current families who have a child eligible to start Foundation in 2018, will be able to enrol the

child at Hampton if families move into the zone for Hampton and later move out of the zone, subsequent

siblings ie future Foundation students will not be able to attend our school. This will be effective from the beginning of 2019

if families move out of the enrolment zone, their children already enrolled at Hampton may remain.

I am happy to discuss this matter in person with parents or interested members of the community if required. Please make an appointment through the school office.

Staffing I welcome two new staff members to our community: Megan Moore will be teaching Grade 2A on Fridays commencing this week. Megan is an

experienced teacher who is replacing Kelly Shoppee. Tom Prendergast will be teaching 4A commencing on Tuesday of next week. Tom is a

very experienced teacher who will replace Anne Coburn. Anne is taking some sick leave for the remainder of the term. I extend my best wishes to Anne for a speedy recovery.

I have decided to appoint a second Assistant Principal at Hampton, this position will commence at the beginning of the 2018 school year. There has already been strong interest expressed for this vacancy. Many of the larger schools in the local area have two Assistant Principals. There are numerous challenges and complexities in leading a large school; I am looking forward to utilising and drawing on the expertise of the second Assistant Principal. Parent Opinion Surveys Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training and conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at each school. The survey is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate, student engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey is accessible via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time from Monday 7

th August to Sunday 27

th August.

Approximately 20% of our parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. The online survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi. Survey language guides are available in a range of languages including Albanian, Bengali, Burmese, Cantonese, Dari, Filipino, Greek, Gujarati, Indonesian, Japanese, Karen, Khmer, Korean, Macedonian, Malayalam, Pashto, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Sinhalese, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Turkish or Urdu. The survey results will be reported back to our school at the end of September. The Education Committee, School Council and the Leadership Team will analyse the survey results and a summary included in the newsletter. Last year we used survey results to change the structure of our senior school and have straight grades. For further information, please contact John Painter or me at school or visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyparent.aspx Assembly Performances Well done to 1A who led the singing of the National Anthem at assembly yesterday. Congratulations go to Aloysius Beare in 1B who performed ‘Ukrainian Girl’ on the piano. Aloysius played this piece with considerable sensitivity. Academic Excellence Awards Congratulations go the following students who received academic excellence awards at assembly yesterday: Charlie Morgan from 1C for displaying a commendable approach to school and making

Coding

This semester has seen the implementation of the new Digital Technologies curriculum with a major focus on computational and algorithmic thinking. Students across all year levels at HPS are learning the basics of coding and programming using a range of visual programming languages. Year 1 and 2 students can be seen here working with the visual programming language 'Scratch' to create their own interactive stories.

Team Building in 1D

"Today we had to work together as a team to build a tower to hold a basketball." "It was tricky and we had to problem solve because we had to make sure the tower had equal sides to hold up the ball." "We used our listening skills to communicate our ideas with each other to make sure everyone was heard." "I really liked some of the creative ideas my team had." "We had to come up with a plan first and listen to each other’s ideas." "We made sure we were being responsible and sensible because that is good teamwork"

Science Week at HPS 14 -18 August, 2017 Momentum is certainly building across the school as we delve deeper into our Term 3 ‘Future Earth’ focused inquiries. Working through the ‘Define’ and ‘Discover’ stages of the Solution Fluency model, teachers and students are sinking their teeth into global issues that really matter. In the ‘Define’ stage, we have to clearly define what the problem is. We must decide exactly what it is that needs to be solved, and give proper context to the problem. ‘Discovery’ is the stage of research, gathering, and then analyzing, knowledge. It gives the problem context so that we can identify with it easier, and come up with the best solution possible. Each year level is tackling a slightly different essential question, centred on a whole school sustainability focus including:

From alien visitors to resources mysteriously disappearing, students at each level have been intro-duced to and engaged in their challenge scenario, are beginning to unpack new language and ask questions to better understand their role in the learning journey ahead. During our Science Week events (Week 5, 14th -18th August), Parents will be invited to participate and become a part of the learning journey with their children. By Week 5, students will be working through the ‘Dream’ and ‘Design’ stages of Solution Fluencies. In the ‘Dream’ stage, we open the heart and mind to possibilities and visions of a solution the way we wish to see it. This phase of Solu-tion Fluency is about imagination, extrapolation, and visualization. In the ‘Design’ phase we begin utilizing gathered knowledge to synthesize solutions. We create goals and milestones, assign roles, and create systems of accountability. We look forward to welcoming families into classroom to experience the learning and work alongside the children as they Dream and Design possible solutions to real word challenges. There are a num-ber of exciting year level and whole school events planned so make sure you save the date and stay tuned for next week’s newsletter updates! We know there are some amazing scientists in our school community and would love to hear from you. If you would like to be involved in our Science Week events, sharing your experience and inspir-ing future scientists, please contact Sue or Lisa via the school office. Sue Knight Principal

How can we best create a bright future?

What responsibilities come with knowledge of our planet and how we treat it?

Is Earth a lost cause? What can we do to save our planet? We live on an ancient land but in a young country, so where did our culture come from? What makes

someone Australian? How has climate change impacted on global immigration and what might be the

cultural impact?

How can humans make the planet sustainable?

How do our food choices affect our future?

How might I help my school environment?

SPORT NEWS

AFL Girls Footy What a huge day for the girls as 20 players travelled all the way to Bonbeach for the divisional AFL Round Robin for Girls. The Round Robin was played with some modified rules such as no kicking the ball off the ground and only 10 minute halves. There were 12 schools and Hampton first took on Lloyd Street Primary. Our girls played very well with the Jacob sisters, Giselle Buckley and Kate Godden doing brilliantly. We won convincingly 6.3.39 to 1.0.6. We next took on Malvern Primary School who were just massive - 5 or 6 girls that could really play well and they were strong, fast, had incredible distance in the kicks and were all brilliant marks overhead. They knew how to spread from a contest and won every tap out as if they had been practising for years. Our little girls were brave and tackled fiercely and for a while, we were in front - which was due to our sheer determination at the contest. However, we lost 3.2.20 to 1.1.7. Our next game was against a strong Cheltenham side who also had a couple of very savvy, strong players. They relied on these two players in particular, but Cheltenham had not come across the fierce tackling of the Hampton Girls. Every time one of the key players for Cheltenham got the ball, there were 2, 3 and sometimes 4 girls there to lay a crunching tackle. We ended up beating Cheltenham 2.3 to 4.1 and they were tough but we just tackled them hard and they could not utilise their big players. Our next game was to decide second place. The second placed team would progress to the regional competition along with first. We were to play Parkdale and the teams were evenly matched. We scored the first goal thanks to a great play by Daisy, but Parkdale were also relentless. They tackled as hard as we did and sometimes the game resembled rugby scrums with no team giving an inch. The half time score was 1.0.6 to 0.3.3 our favour. They came out and scored a goal to hit the lead but we hit back immediately. We scored a couple of points as the clock wound down to 3 minutes. Parkdale got the benefit of a good bounce and some missed tackles and kicked long. One of their players kicked it and it was marked about 5 metres out. She calmly slotted the ball through to give them a 3 point edge. We raced the ball up the pitch from the centre bounce but some skill errors stopped us progressing and everyone down on the ball. The last minute went so quickly as Parkdale made tackle after tackle to prevent Hampton getting close to their goal and the game ended with a win to the opponents. The final score was 3.6.24 to 3.2.20. The girls were gallant in defeat and I have a new appreciation of the toughness of some of our students. Great job girls! Anyway - we came third - A breath away from going to regional finals. Best players consistently all day were the Jacob Sisters, Kate, Megan, Giselle, Audrey, Alice and Sophie! Term 3 Bathers Collection!

The JSC is reaching out to all teachers, students and parents to help us with ‘Water Safety Vietnam’.

In Vietnam, drowning is the leading cause of injury related death among

children over the age of 1. This is estimated to be an average of 35 children per day.

Water Safety Vietnam’s aim is to significantly reduce the drowning death rate per 100,000 people in Vietnam. This is achievable by promoting the

opportunity for all children in Vietnam to learn swimming, survival and wa-ter safety skills, which will enable them to survive in a range of aquatic

environments.

Water Safety Vietnam teaches drowning prevention to young girls and boys. These kids don’t own bathers, so we are asking YOU to please do-

nate and help us collect any second-hand girls’ one piece bathers and boys’ board-shorts for ages 4-15.

Simply place your bathers in the big box in the front office by Friday September 15

th.
