Wednesday September 20 2017 From Sue Buildings and Grounds Update Yesterday we had a number of contractors visit the school to discuss the timeline for the installation of a new Mod 10 double storey classroom. With the school holidays fast approaching, the department plans to commence work as soon as possible and hopefully during the vacation period. This means that the existing Mod 5 portable classroom, currently housing 3A and 3D will need to be packed up and emptied over the next couple of days. Please note the following: the two class teachers will empty their existing classrooms today the two grades will relocate temporarily to the eastern end of the BER building 3A and 3D will continue to line up in their regular line up position with the other Grade 3s in the mornings and after each break the old Mod 5 portable will be removed during the vacation period preparation of the area to receive the new Mod 10 building will commence as soon as practicable, hopefully during the holidays fencing will be installed during the holidays to secure this space the other grades occupying neighbouring portables will access their rooms from the southern side (oval end) to ensure safe access there will be no limitation on play space during the construction period the carpark will be closed during the construction phase, the contractors will require this space the old Mod 5 portable will be removed by a crane and the new Mod 10 will be installed in two sections over two days by a crane some of our children are going to be curious about this development which is perfectly predictable, yard duty staff will be particularly vigilant and children will be regularly reminded to watch the developments from a distance. We are excited that our long awaited classroom is finally arriving in the near future! Whilst there will be some short term inconvenience, in the long term we will have a brand new building with 4 state of the art classrooms. It will be lovely for our children to go into a new classroom with everything in pristine order! If parents have questions regarding the new Mod 10, I am more than happy to discuss these. Conversation and a Coffee with Sue Next term I will be scheduling a regular time for parents to come and have a conversation with me about any topic of interest, philosophical perspective or concern. This will be an informal discussion over a coffee. The first chat will be held on Thursday 12 October at 3pm. Subsequent chats will be held on: Thursday 26 October at 6pm, Thursday 9 November at 3pm, Thursday 23 November at 6pm and Thursday 7 December at 3pm. Please inform the office via email or phone if you would like to attend. I look forward to the conversation with any interested parents.

Whilst there will be some short term inconvenience, in the long term we will have a brand new building with 4 state of the art classrooms. It will be lovely for our children to go into a new classroom with everything in pristine order! If parents have questions regarding the new Mod 10, I am more than happy to discuss these. Battle of the Boots This year’s Battle of the Boots was once again strongly supported not only with dads donning their footy boots but also by family and community members. The atmosphere prevailing at the ground prior to, during and well after the match had concluded was terrific. The notion of the St Mary’s and Hampton dads joining forces to relive some of their footy memories, and for a few to make some new memories, whilst raising funds for Fight MND and the local schools was fantastic. This year, a total profit of $16,600 resulted! Each school will receive $7,000 and Fight MND, the focused charity for 2017, will receive $2,600. I extend my sincere thanks to the organisers: Steve Nelson, Narelle Britt, Gary Seignior and Mike Cahill and to all the sponsors, particularly

the Sandringham Community Bank. I am sure there are many looking forward to the challenge and camaraderie that the 2018 event will create. Assemblies Yesterday at assembly the Junior String Ensemble performed two pieces ‘Barrier Reef’ and ‘Shark Attack’. I extend congratulations to the members of the ensemble including: Mason Ma in 3E, Agatha Beare in 3B, Emily Arendsen in 3E, Zahra Jacobs in 3B, Jessica Lopez in 3B, Isabella Kalogeropoulos in 3B, Mia Suddes in 3C, Isabella Tranter in 3C, Mietta King in 3A, Isha Hoban in 3D, Alex Hill in PB, Gisele Rodguis in 2E, Rory Greenan in 2E, Avelynn Lawson in 2E, Lily Theuma in 2C, Jasmine Hadfield in 3A, and Dorothy Oakley all playing violin and Mandy Brook on keyboard, Traci Cenedese on guitar and Patrick Hill in 4C playing shark sound effects on cello. Academic Excellence Awards Congratulations go to the following students who received an academic excellence award at assembly yesterday: Georgia Thickins in 1A for being a voracious and confident reader displaying

advanced skills in comprehension and an ability to express and justify her opinions and consider the thoughts and perspectives of others

Kiwanis Build up Grades (BUG) Award Yesterday we had Oscar Barnett from 1B and Emily McNamara from 1C receive the Kiwanis BUG award at assembly. The awards were presented by Leah Raakers from the Brighton Kiwanis Club. Our school is fortunate to have the ongoing support and encouragement provided by Kiwanis. The recipients consistently displayed the following qualities and attributes during their Reading Recovery sessions with Judy Van Pelt and in class: a delightful and cooperative approach helpful and courteous manners diligence and enthusiasm being positive and diligent in completing homework persistence. Well done to Oscar and Emily! Art Trail Helpers Thank you to Art Captains, Zach Anquetil and Emma Watson for assisting with the Art Trail. Zach proved to be tireless and worked hard until the job was done. He was enthusiastic, extremely reliable, demonstrated great organisational skills and remained positive and calm. Zach gathered a fantastic group of helpers to swiftly take down the displays on Wednesday morning. Well done and many thanks to Louis Stefanovic, Nathan Gee, Harley Todd, Nic Karamitos and Oscar Kalogeropoulos.

Reading Recovery Well done to Zoe Sharpe who has made very pleasing progress with her reading and writing this term and has successfully completed the program in Reading Recovery. Zoe showed determination and a strong work ethic to do her very best at all times. Zoe’s sister Cara played a very helpful and supportive role in providing time each day to listen to Zoe read and to model reading for her sister. Having a cross age buddy to reinforce the learning makes a noticeable difference and when the buddy is your sister it is even

more special! End of Term The last day of Term 3 is Friday 22 of September. We have a final assembly commencing at 2pm in the BER for all grades. School will finish at 2.30pm on this day. Childcare will be available from 2.30pm however bookings must be made through Camp Australia. I wish all community members a lovely holiday period and hope that those travelling remain safe and enjoy every minute. I look forward to seeing community members on the first day of Term 4 which is Monday 9 October. Sue Knight Principal

We need your stickers back! As you know, our school has been participating in Woolworths Earn & Learn. The program has now finished for this year, so a big thanks to everyone who supported our school. We're now at the important stage of the program where the Sticker Sheets are collected and lodged as our Earn & Learn claim. We will then be able to get new educational equipment for our school. The more we collect, the more we can redeem. So this week, please send in your Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheets and any loose Earn & Learn stickers you may have. Remember to check your handbag, the car glove box or they may be stuck on the fridge. Every little bit helps. Thanks again for all your support!”
