Why Maps?We are all here on Planet Earth as explorers. That intense curiosity for discovery is

hard-wired into our being. Maps are the ultimate expression of the human spirit for exploration and discovery.

Maps also serve as a universal language of sorts. Think about it…you can look at a map created by someone from another culture and in another language, yet you understand the basics of it. Why? Because of the universal nature of its symbols, representation and context! It’s a powerful idea when you think about it…maps literally transcend manmade boundaries and express the commonalities we all share–our place on this Big Blue Marble zipping around through the vastness of the Universe.

The Mysteries of Time…Maps also reveal a relevant understanding of a location or region based on its

specific period of time.

We have a tendency to homogenize history in a way that makes it look like or reference like what we know and understand living NOW in the 21st Century. And it just isn't that way. As you time travel back through the years using maps as your guide, you discover the truth and reality of context that has already been written.

As an example, let’s travel back to 1800. Your family ancestors are sitting around the dinner table discussing the day’s events. What would they have talked about? For them, the United States had only been a nation for 24 years. Congress and the President (John Adams) were still meeting in Philadelphia, although rumor had it that they were moving to a new location in Washington, D.C.

Many spent most of their time farming: planting, weeding, and harvesting, and taking care of animals. Very few people went to school then and few could actually read. Roads weren’t roads like we think of them today. They were little more than dirt paths and used mostly for walking, donkeys or horses.

The area where I live in Pennsylvania.

The Hidden Revealed…For our ancestors in 1800, it is the beginning of a new century and they obviously

have no idea of the events to come that would impact and shape modern history…the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Louisiana Purchase, the invention of automobiles, telephones and camera.

Maps help us understand life “as it was” and provide context to the changes that brought us to where, and who, we are today! They demonstrate human progress, reveal long-gone locales and provide an orientation of “what was” in order to help us understand “what is.”

Perhaps you’re thinking, “Who cares! That’s all in the past and not relevant today!”

“Why would I care where someone lived 220 years ago? Good question! I will share one example as it relates to maps.

The map below is a small section of an 1895 map that shows the GettysburgCampaign from the Civil War. The dots on the map represent houses and farms thatexisted at that time. This is the area where I live and many of these dwellings no longer exist. If I were toexplore some of thesesites using a metal detector(with permission of course),what are the odds I mayfind period jewelry, coins, relics and more? Very good! But you cannot find what you don’t know to look for. Maps reveal that to us!
