From Passion to PurposeCOMMUNITY:
2015 Annual Report
2
One of the most exciting new projects this year was the creation of Your Neighborhood Connection. A joint venture of Moravian Manor and Luthercare, Your Neighborhood Connection was formed to provide in-home services to residents on our senior living campuses and, as soon as possible, to expand our reach to those in the greater community. It was truly exciting to come together with a Lititz neighbor who shares a strong reputation and faith-based heritage. Our organizations have partnered well, joining resources as we share a vision of making the community stronger by providing wellness and independence for older adults.
Another new opportunity developed during 2015 was Systems Aligned in Learning (SAIL), the newly launched collaborative between Luthercare and seven other partners, funded by United Way of Lancaster County. Luthercare is serving as the lead agency, building on our model used for the Luthercare for Kids mentoring program that connects home-based child care

providers to resources and services. The SAIL collaborative will bring additional support to the children and families served by home-based child care providers, using highly accessible mobile delivery systems. This work with others created a partnership that goes far beyond what we could do alone. In the process, several new organizations became aware of us, our commitment and the work we do — and we became a more strongly recognized and regarded leader in the community.
Another indicator of our impact is the increase in Luthercare for Kids’ Professional Development training capacity, as we now have state contracts for on-site training in nine counties and throughout Pennsylvania using an electronic platform.
On the Operations side of the organization, we achieved significant movement in two very important areas: electronic health records and a triple-check process to ensure maximum Medicaid reimbursement. Health records prepare us well as we move into future relationships with
accountable care organizations through which Medicare funding will come to us. Both of these efforts, though not seen by the public, increase efficiency and allow us to be stronger and better stewards. When you combine these efforts with moving into a renovated, well-equipped administration building, Luthercare is better positioned for a flexible future.
We are currently completing the first phase of a major renovation to the fifteen-year-old Muhlenberg Apartment Building at Luther Acres in Lititz. A completely re-imagined first-floor common space area, which begins with the first steps in the door and continues to include new dining and gathering spaces, will enhance the experience for current residents and those who follow. The completion of corridor and common spaces at St. John’s Herr Estate in Columbia has also substantially enhanced the resident experience, and the new look and feel has helped us significantly strengthen occupancy in the apartment building.
Tremendous opportunities and challenges are a part of each year for Luthercare, and 2015 held both for us as we worked to bring our
mission to life each day. We recognize that organizations throughout our service area provide similar or even the same services, but for us, the difference is in why we serve and, we trust, recognizable in how we serve others. We are constantly aware of the giving and receiving nature of the work of social ministry, and we strive to increasingly engage participation in decisions and plans. More than providing passive care or blind leadership, we actively seek out what is best together. We also continue to be open to new ventures and avenues.
Our commitment to continuous capital improvement and avoiding deferred maintenance means Luthercare remains fiscally strong, and we are continually improving our communities for current and future residents. In 2015, we maintained organizational occupancy at just a fraction below budget, in spite of a near-doubling of turnover and attrition in Independent Living at both St. John’s Herr Estate and Luther Acres.
We reflect on 2015 thankful for many things — the continued support and partnership of congregations, residents, children and families, donors, volunteers, team members, business associates and friends, all of whom enhance and enlarge our mission. We are in this together. And we work, side by side, to reflect Christ’s love through service to others.
In service,
Carl R. McAloose President and CEO

Valente is active in nearly 20 local community organizations that share a common goal of helping those in need. Among them: PA CARES (Pennsylvania Americans showing Compassion, Assistance, and Reaching out with Empathy for Service members), the Kiwanis Club of Lebanon, the Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Community Health Council of Lebanon Valley and the Lebanon County Council of Human Service Agencies.
Whether it’s working with teen mothers, working with military families and services or serving on committees, Valente says her passion is to help those in need access the wonderful programs in Lebanon County.
“Working at Luthercare is the perfect fit for me,” she says. “The intangible benefits of working here — such as pride, satisfaction and accomplishment — are worthwhile reasons alone. But what really drives me is knowing that when we share our time and talents with others, we are solving problems, strengthening communities and most importantly, improving lives.”
Making ConneCtions. Building Community.
Valente believes Luthercare’s commitment to outreach demonstrates the organization's compassionate spirit. “That notion of caring has become a part of Luthercare’s identity and I couldn’t be more proud to be part of this family.”
“The services provided by CCIS have an enormous impact on the health and well-being of
our community,” says Valente, who is a Luthercare employee. “Lack of affordable child care is one of the major barriers to employment . . . CCIS assists families by helping them find quality child care programs
and additional resources that provide critical support.”
Valente says the Luthercare connection is important for CCIS, and the benefits are wide reaching. “In addition to my role with CCIS, Luthercare encourages me to be active in other not-for-profit organizations within the community. This involvement connects me to more people, which in turn helps me more effectively identify needs,” she says. “At CCIS, most families are identified through our established collaborations and word-of-mouth referrals, so the more I’m out there connecting, the more families we reach.”
"Every member of our community deserves the chance to lead a life without continual struggles. Our role is to connect them with the tools and information they need to set them on their way.”– Lorita Valente, CCIS
Director.
Child Care Information Services (CCIS) is a program of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. CCIS links lower-income families to quality subsidized child care and assists them in accessing needed community resources. Luthercare is the designated program administrator of the CCIS program in Lebanon County.

The musical power and beauty of an organ can raise spirits, lift hearts and inspire minds. With its rich, beautiful sounds, the organ can reach our deepest emotions. It can move us to tears, console our grief and enhance our joy. Perhaps because of its close association with worship, many say no other
form of music acts so powerfully as an instrument of both reflection and celebration.
It is for all these reasons that St. John’s Herr Estate resident Harlan Eye became the sole benefactor for the new organ now enjoyed by all St. John’s residents.
When Mr. Eye heard a resident committee had formed with the purpose of raising money and purchasing a new organ, he knew he found the perfect way
to honor his late wife’s love and appreciation of music. With his family’s enthusiastic support, he donated the full amount of the cost of the organ. Now, Mary Eye’s musical legacy lives on. Her passion for music continues connecting music lovers at St. John’s while giving her family an enduring reminder of her great fondness for the organ.
gifts that Connect, Inspire & Engage. ConneCting PeoPle through art
Lancaster artist and Luthercare's Artist-in-Residence Freiman Stoltzfus’s spectacular painting inspired by the Latin phrase "ex nihilo" — creation “from nothing” — adds breathtaking beauty to the lobby of the Luther Townhome Apartment Building. Since its premiere at a Meet-the-Artist event, residents have taken great pleasure in the magnificent three-panel painting and in knowing it is a permanent fixture in the Luther Acres landscape.
No one, however, expected that the site of the painting would become the popular gathering place for residents that it has become. “It’s an example of how art has the potential to ignite conversation, bridge gaps and create connections between people where there were none previously,” says Luthercare Vice President of Philanthropy & Community Engagement, Rev. William Snyder. “This very inspiring piece is proof of art’s unique power to engage people and connect them to one another.”
As more residents delighted in the painting’s beauty, two people discovered a way to bring even more life to this painting: lighting. Bruce and Diana Hill donated the necessary funding to purchase gallery illumination for the painting. “Beautiful art enlivens everything,” notes Snyder. “And,
of course, good lighting enhances that effect even more.”
ConneCting Children through Play
The well-being of a community begins with the well-being of children. The late Catherine “Katie” Bradbury believed that all kids deserve a childhood filled with the balanced and active play needed to thrive.
Katie began the Reamstown Before- and After-School Program after witnessing children waiting in inclement weather to enter their elementary school in the early morning hours. While the program has helped thousands of children receive safe, quality care both before and after school, her vision also included a playground — a vision she did not live to see fulfilled.
Last spring, Katie’s dream came to fruition when Luthercare for Kids dedicated a new play area at its Reamstown Early Learning Center. The play area incorporates two new, secured playgrounds with age-specific safety surfacing and equipment. The play area, named “Miss Katie’s Playground,” was made possible by a gift from David and Jean Bradbury as a tribute to Katie’s vision for the children of Reamstown.
Whether it’s enhancing life at a Luthercare community or making a donation that benefits area children, Luthercare's 'family members' — donors and supporters — step up and do what it takes to help people
reach their full potential.
Below are just a few examples of how generous Luthercare donors have played a role in helping people be healthy and thrive, connect with others and contribute to a better overall community.
friends of sPang Crest – ConneCting residents to enhanCed Quality of life
Residents, families and team members agree that the most popular place to connect in the entire Spang Crest community is the gift shop.
As part of the work of Friends of Spang Crest, roughly 30 volunteers staff the gift shop. Together they donate countless hours of their time along with thousands of dollars to benefit the residents and staff.
Over the years, the Friends have also provided items like a whirlpool tub, new electric beds and specialty wheelchairs, along with entertainment programs including a popular outdoor summer concert series, as well as support for much needed benevolent care.
unseen gifts
These are great stories about gifts we see, tangibly connecting people to others. There are many gifts, anonymous and noted, from so many people supporting scholarships, benevolent care, the nursing scholarship fund and life in general, that connect, inspire and engage people every day.
SAIL — Systems Aligned in Learning — was created to
ensure children have access to high-quality child care. Funded by a three-year grant from the United Way of Lancaster County, SAIL is a collaborative effort between Luthercare for Kids and five local agencies: the Library System of Lancaster County; Lancaster County Council of Churches; Fizika Group, LLC; COBYS Family Services and South Central Regional Key.
Through mobile delivery systems, the SAIL Collaborative supplies needed tools and training to home-based child care providers, empowering them to offer the same educational resources and counseling services as center-based preschools.
"SAIL is designed to help break the cycle of poverty by giving children the skills they need to succeed,” says Jamie Reichenbach, the Luthercare for Kids Coordinator of Mentoring Services. “It addresses the disparity of children from lower-income families who tend to
be in home-based programs and need access to the same quality resources and opportunities as their peers in center-based care.”
SAIL combines the organizational strengths of each collaborative partner to help children become socially and emotionally ready for kindergarten. The partners focus on essential components to healthy development and learning:
• Luthercare for Kids’ Mobile Mentoring Program is the foundation for SAIL, providing training and educational materials.
• Library System of Lancaster County provides mobile library resources, training in early childhood literacy and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) modules.
• Lancaster County Council of Churches facilitates nutrition training for providers and families and delivers bags of healthy food.
• Fizika Group, LLC inspires healthy brain development through physical education programs specifically tailored to home-based environments.
• COBYS Family Services uses interactive workshops to assist caregivers in creating learning-ready environments where children thrive.
• South Central Regional Key offers providers the resources necessary to achieve post-secondary credentials.
The SAIL program also includes monthly visits to review educational materials with home-based providers. Reichenbach says the visits cover a wide range of topics including effective business practices, how to conduct meaningful activities with children and understanding the complexities of state regulations.
Enthusiasm for the project is widespread. “In bringing together an array of Lancaster County community resources driven

toward a common goal, we are able to offer a wonderful program that will have a tremendous and lasting impact on our community,” says Reichenbach.
“This collaborative effort goes far beyond what we
could do alone,” says Sally Groome, Luthercare’s Vice President, Marketing and
Communications. “In the process, several new
organizations became aware of us, our capacity and our commitment to the children
in our region through high-quality early learning
programs.”
Currently, the group is working with approximately 20 home-based providers, but with over 100 in Lancaster County alone, Reichenbach acknowledges there is still much work to do.
“The SAIL Collaborative exists because we believe in kids,” she says. “We are all committed to doing everything we can to ensure their future is bright.”
All services provided through SAIL are free. The United Way Collaborative Impact Grant awards $207,000 each year during a three-year funding period to the SAIL Collaborative, for a total award of $621,000.

sPang Crest holiday food drive
Each year, the team members of Spang Crest, a Luthercare community in Lebanon, look forward to the Holiday Food Drive. This year, their enthusiasm netted 853 pounds of food to benefit local Lebanon County Food Banks. It was the most successful drive to date.
Spang Crest team member Kathy Long is the food drive coordinator who says the team members are always eager to help. "Some team members have stated over the years that the food bank has been a lifeline for people they know," she said. "Even those team members facing their own challenges are committed to giving and have stated, 'I may not have a lot to give, but I want to help someone in need.' To me, that's real compassion."
“I am very proud of the Spang Crest team and how everyone
pulls together for such a worthy cause,” says Spang
Crest Executive Director, Daniel W. Deitzel III. “This annual event not only provides food
and comfort to our neighbors in need, it creates a real
connection and close bond among our team members.”
The 2015 drive collected nearly 300 pounds more food than the previous year, and the team members have set a new goal for 2016: 1,000 pounds.
luther aCres turkey trot
The Second Annual Luther Acres Turkey Trot was held last November at Luther Acres, the Luthercare community in Lititz. Sixty-seven residents, team members, family members and a few furry friends came together
to get some exercise and collect food items to help the area’s less fortunate families enjoy a brighter holiday season.
More than 617 pounds of non-perishable food items and a cash donation were delivered to the Lititz Warwick Community Chest. Luther Acres' Wellness Center Director, Beth Bucher, organized the event.
As each of these efforts helped, in a small way, to alleviate suffering, they also created an immediate impact upon the lives of those in need. Luthercare is committed to working alongside those in the community seeking to find new and lasting ways to bring about an end to hunger and other forms of suffering in the lives of others.
CoMBating food inseCurity… Together. It’s hard to imagine in America there are people forced to make the choice, sometimes daily, between paying
a utility bill or buying food to feed their family. Often, young single parents need to work two or three jobs in order to make enough money to take care of their children. Even here in Central Pennsylvania, where one probably wouldn’t expect it, there are those who struggle with "food insecurity."
The USDA defines "food insecurity" as a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food. Hunger is an individual-level physiological condition that may result from food insecurity. In Lancaster County, it is estimated that 11.4% of the population – about 59,000 people – are food insecure.
At Luthercare, our team members, residents and families, along with other concerned community partners, continue to hear – and respond to – the needs of their neighbors and collectively set out to make an impact.

beyond – packaged over 30,000 meals!

st. John’s herr estate & Zion lutheran ChurCh food PaCkaging event
Inspired by the Bible verse John 6:35 in which Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life,” Pastor Traci Glover of Zion Lutheran Church in Marietta had an idea about how her parishioners could help feed Lancaster County’s hungry. The idea: Start a food packaging program based on a New England initiative called End Hunger New England.
With a lofty goal of packaging 20,000 protein-fortified macaroni and cheese dinners to deliver to area food banks, Pastor Glover knew she would need help and knew exactly whom to ask. Along with other partners, she reached out to Luthercare.
"[Luthercare] did not disappoint. They answered our call in full force by donating half of the $5,000 overhead cost and by
sending nearly 30 volunteers from nearby St. John’s Herr Estate, the Luthercare community in Columbia, to join Zion parishioners in packaging the food.”
Claire Storm, a resident of St. John’s Herr Estate, was an event volunteer. “The food packaging event was a wonderfully fulfilling way to help ensure our local food banks can continue to feed those who are hungry,” she said. “Equally important, I think it was also helpful in raising awareness about the issue of hunger. Unfortunately, it is an all-too-real problem in our community.”
Luthercare Director of Church Relations and Pastoral Care, Rev. Glenn A. Beard Jr., also volunteered at the food packaging event, packing meals and transporting St. John’s volunteers to and from Zion. He said the residents were very eager to
participate in the event and took their “jobs” very seriously. “Our residents know this kind of effort provides important temporary relief to those in need. They know that it is important to do what they can to reach out and provide support.”
Pastor Glover agrees that food packaging events and food banks are an essential part of the solution for alleviating hunger and improving food security, saying she hopes to do something like this again. “Together, our two organizations made a positive impact on our community and believe we can make an even greater impact next year.”
While the goal of this first event was to package 20,000 meals, the ambitious group of volunteers — ranging from ages 5 to 85+ — packaged over 30,000!
When it comes to achieving the important goal of
helping seniors remain safe, independent and healthy at home, two is infinitely better than one. And that is precisely why Luthercare and Moravian Manor have joined forces to create a new in-home services partnership – Your Neighborhood Connection.
Your Neighborhood Connection has begun providing non-medical, in-home supportive services to residents of Luthercare and Moravian Manor communities and will also be extending these valuable services to the greater community in 2016.
“Home and companion care is a preferred solution for many of today’s seniors because people are most comfortable in their own homes,” says Karen Pastrana, Executive Director of Your Neighborhood Connection. “Our services are designed to provide the assistance seniors need to ensure they can safely remain in their homes where they most want to be.”
Your Neighborhood Connection provides companion services such as assistance with household chores like laundry or meal preparation, transportation to and from appointments, help with grocery shopping and medication reminders. They are simple services that Pastrana says make a big difference in a person’s ability to remain living independently at home.
In addition to a wide range of companion care services, the organization also offers Companion Care Plus, non-medical personal care services such as assistance with bathing, dressing, hygiene and mobility. Your Neighborhood Connection also offers visits from a Licensed Practical Nurse, a service many other similar agencies do not provide.
Luthercare President and CEO, Carl McAloose, says the home care partnership with Moravian Manor supports the Luthercare mission of meeting unmet needs within the community. “We had been
looking for a way to reach beyond our walls to effectively serve area seniors,” he says. “Working collaboratively with Moravian Manor helps us achieve that goal. It also enables us to be better stewards of existing resources, while at the same time allowing us to provide a larger breadth of service to the greater community.”
J. David Swartley, CEO of Moravian Manor, adds that the partnership makes services available to local residents who choose not to move to a Continuing Care Retirement Community for a variety of reasons. “Your Neighborhood Connection has helped us reach a broader spectrum of individuals at a lower cost than if either of our organizations independently offered home care. Our vision is to work together to provide cost-effective home care services that support better health, better care and stronger communities.”
the Power of PartnershiP:Strengthening & Empowering Community – Together.
Today, there are more than 34
million individuals in this country
providing care to a friend or family
member. Caring for an aging loved one
while raising a family and balancing
a career can take a toll and change
family dynamics. Caregiving is highly
stressful – whether a loved one lives
down the street or thousands of miles
away. Your Neighborhood Connection
can be a valuable partner for those area
caregivers who need support from a
trusted organization.
Whether it’s assisting with household
tasks, providing transportation, or
preparing and sharing a meal, our
services offer family caregivers the
opportunity to spend more quality
time with their loved ones rather than
spending that time on chores. Our Care
Companions are available to provide
needed support for as little as a few
hours a week or daily to meet changing
needs.
A Partner for Caregivers
the Power of PeaCe of Mind
“By working together, Luthercare and Moravian Manor are empowering area seniors to be active participants in managing their health and well-being at home,” says Pastrana. “At the end of the day, there is no greater joy for a caregiver than to see how they’ve made a positive difference in a person’s life. For those we assist, you can see the sense of relief and the peace of mind they experience. That’s why we do what we do.”

$77,000 was raised for the
Luthercare for Kids Scholarship Fund
It was a beautiful day for golf on September 14, 2015, at the Bent Creek Country Club in Lititz, where 128 golfers spent the afternoon teeing it up for kids in support of the Luthercare for Kids Scholarship Fund.
Following the tournament, 170 guests attended a Celebration Dinner, creating an atmosphere of warmth and appreciation to thank those in attendance for their support to ensure that all children have access to high-quality child care and early learning experiences. Without the scholarships this outing provides, Luthercare could not extend the benefits of early learning to so many.
This year, Tee it Up for Kids! raised more than $77,000 for the Luthercare for Kids Scholarship Fund. After expenses, all net proceeds went directly to scholarships. This is a significant achievement and will go far in providing tuition assistance to the children whose working families are income-qualified – nearly 60 percent of the children attending our Luthercare for Kids Early Learning Centers. Our sincere thanks go to our event sponsors, individual donors and golfers who supported this exceptional event!

Donors who desire to create a personal, mission-related legacy often use a planned gift to accomplish their philanthropic goals. Each year, Luthercare is blessed to be the recipient of these planned gifts, given
through individuals’ final estate plans, charitable gift annuities, trusts or other giving vehicles.
Planned gifts can be designated to support a specific community – Luther Acres, Spang Crest or St. John’s Herr Estate – or a specific program – Child Care Scholarships or the Nursing Scholarship Fund – or be used to provide benevolent care or support the Evergreen or Benevolent Care Endowment Funds.
Contact Rev. William C. Snyder, Vice President, Philanthropy & Community Engagement, at (717) 626-1171 ext. 1644 if you are interested in discussing the options for making a planned gift.
We remember these individuals who included us in their final estate plans, and express our sincere appreciation for their vision and commitment to Luthercare for gifts received in 2015.

gifts-in-kind
We extend sincere thanks to all who helped bring our mission to life in 2015 through your
philanthropic support. Your gifts made it possible for us to provide $5.362 million in benevolent and uncompensated care to residents in our senior living communities and the children and families who participate in our Early Learning Programs.
The following pages feature the many names of those who are at the heart of Luthercare – our donors! Tribute gifts made through the Rejoice and Remember program and in honor or memory of loved ones throughout the year, planned gifts and bequests all come together to enable us to reflect Christ’s love through service to others.

Each year, Luthercare team members have the opportunity to make financial contributions in
support of those we serve through our Team Member Campaign. Our campaign theme – Together We Make a Difference – personified our core values of TEAMWORK and COMPASSION and exceeded our $35,000 goal. Gifts were directed to support each of our Senior Living communities, Benevolent Care, Luthercare for Kids Scholarships and Mentoring Program, Nursing Scholarships and In-Home Services. We are grateful for the generosity of each team member who gives so much of themselves in support of our mission.

evergreen soCietyThe Evergreen Society was established to recognize generous contributors who have made a planned gift of
$5,000 or more to Luthercare. These gifts can be made by naming Luthercare as a beneficiary in a will or final estate plan, through a Charitable Gift Annuity, Charitable Remainder Trust, or a gift of insurance, pension plans or other assets. Donors can direct these gifts to the Luthercare Senior Living community or program of their choice, or to the Evergreen Endowment Fund. The vision, loyalty and generosity of Evergreen Society members show a farsighted commitment to sustain Luthercare and its social ministries. The Friends of Lydia Society recognizes individuals who have provided long-term support to Luthercare. Lydia holds an important role in biblical history, as she was the first recorded Christian in the area now known as
Europe to be converted by the Apostle Paul. Her home became the place where the first church in Europe was subsequently established.
“… The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul, and she and her household were baptized …” (Acts 16:14-15 NRSV)
Luthercare is deeply grateful to the 139 supporters who have opened their hearts to the work of our ministry and have helped us extend care and compassion to children and families for the past 10+ years.
