FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
We had a wonderful start to our week with our
Harmony Day Assembly. It was terrific to see how
many different nations are represented within our
school community and how lucky we are to be part of
such a diverse community. Grade 6 students Jawid and
Gayara spoke to the school about their country and
culture of origin and did an excellent job speaking
about their experiences.
We had an open day for prospective families last
Sunday, which was well attended. We have another
open day scheduled for Tuesday 24th of April, from
10-11am. If you know of any prospective families who
have pre-school aged children, please let them know
about our open day. We also offer personalised tours
at times that suit families.
Last week, we elected office bearers at our School
Council AGM. Josie Mack has been re-elected as
President, Janine Abbott – Vice President, Lauren
Brawn – Secretary, Justin Condely – Assistant Secretary
and Phil Cox – Treasurer.
Next week, our Grade 3 students head off to Camp
Curumbene. We hope that they have an enjoyable
time.
Enjoy this lovely weather.

HARMONY DAY AT SHPS At SHPS Everyone Belongs!
We celebrated Harmony Day ON Monday at Assembly. Harmony Day reminds us to treat everyone with respect, tolerance, kindness and inclusion every day. We can help everyone feel that they belong by doing our best to get along with everyone in our class and school. When we do this we are helping build a more peaceful world.
During our Harmony Day Assembly, we will heard some student migration stories and looked at the flags representing the countries our school families come from.
During the week are making Big Bunting in the courtyard at lunchtimes to contribute to the Swan Hill Community Arts Project: ‘BIG BUNTING’. This will be used to decorate Riverside Park on this Saturday 24th March at the community Harmony Day Festival.
Students have been busy making ‘Big Bunting’ at lunchtimes, with the help of Mrs Pryor. Our Bunting will be on display at the Community
Harmony Day Celebrations this Saturday at Riverside Park.

Think about these three words to help your child and yourself, be their most healthy and happy Eat more fruit and veggies Move more often Smile with friends, family and neighbours.
Getting good nutrition, good levels of physical activity and interacting with other kids and adults are important factors in the growth, learning and health of children.
Week 8 – International day of happiness 20th March This is a day dedicated to having conversations, taking action and spreading more happiness in our homes, workplaces, schools and communities. We all want to lead a happy life and want the people we love to be happy too. Our actions and choices can affect our happiness. What makes us happy has less to do with our money or possessions and more to do with our attitudes and relationships with other people. Visit http://www.actionforhappiness.org/ for more
Information.
This year we are learning how to be resilient and use our social skills to participate effectively in school and in the community.
We will be learning to manage our feelings and do our best learning. We are going to use the Berry Street Education as our framework. The Berry Street Education Model is designed with the following principles in mind:
-Every child matters, every day.
-Relationships are the most important part of school.
-Students who have good self-regulation skills will be successful at school and in life.
During Term 1 we are focusing on the domain of BODY. The BODY domain helps us to understand our bodies and feelings. It helps us learn to regulate ourselves so that we can be in control of our feelings and actions.
Our focus this week is on De-escalation. We are thinking about strategies that we can use when we feel heightened and need to find our centre. Some strategies that we can use include:
1.Go to a place where you feel safe.
2. Think about how you are feeling.
3. Use some self-regulation tools to help yourself to calm down .
It is important to have a plan organised before things go wrong. This plan can be called a Focus or Safety plan. By being prepared we can make sure that in the event of a challenging situation we are ready to act in appropriate ways. Decide on some possible actions they can take to ensure that things do not get out of control. It is important children know they can take control of situations that make them feel anxious or uncomfortable. They need to know we are there to help them when they ask and listen to their concerns.
