ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound.

Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence The current discipline of penance for the United States, in addition to the general character of the Lenten season, is as follows: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast (limited to one full meal) and abstinence from meat. Concerning the Good Friday fast, the Second Vatican Council teaches: “Let the Easter fast be kept sacred. Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection may be attained with uplifted and clear mind.” The other Fridays of the season of Lent are also days of abstinence from meat, but each individual may substitute, for the traditional abstinence from meat, some other practice of voluntary or personal penance. This may be physical mortification, temperance, acts of religion, charity or Christian witness. The obligation to abstain from meat binds Catholics 14 years of age and older. The obligation to fast, limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals in the course of the day, binds Catholics from the age of 18 to 59. Those who are younger or older may freely embrace these disciplines; however, Lenten regulations should never endanger one’s health.
With regards to the obligatory days listed above, there are frequent questions about the degree of the seriousness of the matter. The teaching of Pope Paul may be simply paraphrased: The obligation to observe, as a whole or “substantially,” the penitential days specified by the Church is also serious. People should seek to do more rather than less; fast and abstinence on the days prescribed, and works of religion and charity on the Fridays of Lent, should be considered a minimal response to the Lord’s call to penance and con- version of life.
Lenten Project of Prayer The beginning of Lent when we call to mind to the burdens Jesus suffered and the cross he had to bear for our sake. Beginning Ash Wednesday you will find small white paper crosses on the table in the gathering area. Take one home and reflect on your own personal burdens, prayer intentions or needs, write your prayer intention on the cross and return it to church in the empty basket on the table in the gathering area. Your crosses will be pinned to our large sanctuary cross and our community will pray for them throughout Lent during the Prayers of the Faithful. During Holy Week they will be taken down and placed at the foot of the cross throughout the Easter season. This is a very powerful, prayerful activity in which our entire community is asked to take part in by praying for the needs of one another. This is a perfect opportunity for our community to continually pray for our loved ones who are away from the church. HOMEBOUND MINISTERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING A CROSS TO THEIR HOMEBOUND PERSON AND PUT IT IN THE BASKET SO WE MAY PRAY FOR THEIR NEEDS.
Sacred Heart will be adding a Mass every Monday at 7:00am during Lent.
The Marian Movement of Priest Cenacle meets
Monday mornings at 9:00am in church to pray the rosary
and other devotional prayers. Please join us for
this hour of prayer for priests & intentions of the Pope.
