M-Pesa helps to decrease the gender gap as well ...
It is estimated that the mobile gap in Kenya has decreased to only 7% today from 22% in 2010.
Most industry observers attribute this impressive performance to M-Pesa.
During expert interviews, academics, NGOs, and MNO executives explained that
M-Pesa was a catalyst to women owning phones. An extremely relevant and
valuable product, M-Pesa allows cheap and efficient money transfers, often from
sons or husbands working away from home to their mothers or wives. The cost
savings of cutting out middlemen, transport costs and fees, as well as the safety
and security of M-Pesa, are beneficial enough to justify the costs of mobile phone ownership.
