From Les Cayes

Jim Rabb (the younger) and I are in Port au Prince as I write this. We've survived the round trip from Port au Prince to Les

Cayes and are uncomfortably stationed at the Best Western, Petionville.

I say uncomfortable not because the rooms aren't plush, they are, not because the food isn't good, it is, not because we aren't

safe, we are. We are uncomfortable because all those things are true and like the rich man in Jesus's parable about the poor

man lying at the gate where the dogs licked his sores, we have the means to purchase our way to comfort, satisfaction and

ease.

You can't get away from that dynamic here as easily as you can in the states. For one, the income gap isn't quite so palpable

stateside. You have to get in your car and hunt for it a bit. Another is that the depth and breadth of poverty in Haiti is truly

stunning.

So we've talked about compassion, partnership, responsibility, history, and moral call to action. As we drove yesterday the

phrase "right the wrong" kept coming to mind. The wrong contained in our historic isolation of Haiti from the world economy.

The wrong contained in our historic and current exploitation of Haitian people. The wrong contained in our gross over

consumption of resources. The wrong contained in our obliviousness to people in need. The list is long and broad.

The right? That has been a troubling prospect over the years not only in Haiti but in our own neighborhoods and communities,

our own places of work and households. But, as people of God, or people of moral courage we must continue to seek it out,

the right.

For Epiphany, right now it has taken the form of creating an entrepreneurship incubator where thirteen students have signed

on in partnership with us to learn and explore ways they might become self‐actualized, independent, small business owners

impacting their community, their lives by their good will hard work and perseverance. That seems right to me in some small

way.

We need mentors. We need capital to invest in their ventures. We need people to teach and evaluate business plans. We

need folks that want to right a wrong and do something courageous.

I want to share more about this trip, this moment in time. I hope you have I'll teach our, or when I do just say yes and see

where it might go.

Epiphany will host a booth at the Candler Park Fall

Fest, Sat‐Sun 9/30‐10/1. This annual, weekend‐long

festival (in Benno's neighborhood!) includes live

music, adult beverages, food trucks, a children's

Parish Weekend

Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

We will worship together, play in the glorious mountain air, take

in the beauty of fall, share our stories and deepen our

relationship with God through our parish family.

Artist Statement

“I consider myself a representational figurative

painter: my work concerns the people, places and

things I care about. In my practice, I undertake

projects in drawing and painting with differing

goals, of varying ambitions. Some large multi‐figure

canvases consume years. In my still life and

landscape pictures, I exercise the power of

observation and the play of light on color. From the

complexity of nature, I abstract color, light, shadow,

and form to interpret in paint what I see before me.

On some occasions the challenge resembles a wild

ride, on others, the process is pure delight, and in

some moments, a sense of peace pervades every

brushstroke. I hope that you enjoy the colors, the

feelings, and the meaning that I find in painting and

interpreting the everyday objects and places

included in this exhibition of my work. I think of

them as "small good things," to borrow the words

of the late great writer Raymond Carver.”

L ife Line Screening Saturday, November 18 at Epiphany

Once again, Epiphany is hosting a Life Line Screening which is open

to the public. However, Epiphanites have the opportunity to

register early and receive a discount.

Life Line Screenings scan for potential health problems related to:

blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal

aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of

the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease;

atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to

stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women,

used to assess the risk of osteoporosis.

experience (and also equipment!)

so we can get away from the

tedious bottling process. But

whatever recipe, and then

ferment, keg, and store in the

undercroft (the sort of crypt

below the organ), with an eye on

coming Epiphany social events,

The Reclaiming the Bible class visits pivotal stories

and themes in the Bible, noting God’s passionate

interest in humanity and all creation. Each session

includes facilitated group engagement with a

scriptural passage, lively discussion, and even a

Epiphany 101

Wonder why Epiphany is like it is? Why we do what we

do? What this space is all about? Join us at 10 a.m. July 23

& 30 and August 6 & 13 in the Choir Loft. We’ll talk about

what it means to be an Episcopalian, what makes Epiphany

particular, how and why we worship like we do, and our

service inside these walls and out. You can attend any

and/or all, but each class is independent.

Confirmation Class

Per the Catechism in the Prayer Book: What is

Confirmation? Confirmation is the rite in which we express

a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from

the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands

by a bishop.

Confirmation classes will be held on Sunday afternoons

from 1 – 3 p.m. for until October 22.

Confirmation is open to any adult or youth seeking to

know more about the Christian faith as the Episcopal

Church has received it. We will discuss prayer, scripture,

church history, sin and redemption, ethics, the BCP,

worship and liturgy, the three‐legged stool (tradition,

scripture and reason), and more!

The Incarnation Fall Journal

Visit epiphany.org to read from the staff about

‘incarnation’, that is, what it might mean for God to

inhabit flesh, and most specifically the person of Jesus. We

want to invite you to think on God in the Flesh this fall, in

our worship, our stewardship, our formation, and in our

parish life. We want to make the overt connections

between how and why we gather to that radical notion

that God is in the midst of us‐‐in the flesh.

Wednesday Night Bible Study

Led by the clergy, we read and have a free‐ranging

discussion about the upcoming Sunday scripture

church. These little booklets are for you to take home. A

donation is requested, but if you don’t have the means at

the time, please feel free to help yourself. There is a wide

variety of well written and thoughtful short booklets. We

hope you will use this resource in your daily devotions,

St. Francis Animal Blessing Sunday, October 8, at 5 p.m.

All pets (and people!) are welcome (properly

restrained pets, please) at the 5 p.m. Eucharist on

Sunday as we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, who

was born in the 12th century and is the

patron saint of animals and the environment. It is a

popular day for pets to be “blessed.” Reception to

follow: Animal crackers for people, People crackers for

animals!

Holy Baptism

The sacrament of Holy Baptism will be offered on All

Saints’ Sunday, November 5, for adults, infants and

children. If you or a member of your family desires to

be baptized, please contact the parish office at

Altar Arrangements & Sanctuary Light

Altar Flowers: Each Sunday, with the exception of Lent, flowers are placed on the high altar area. There are occasions when

the church takes on a more festive look such as Christmas and Easter. Flowers are offered “for the Glory of God and in

thanksgiving or in memory of a person or event.” Parishioners offer altar flowers as a visible sign of acknowledgement of

God’s presence in their lives. The color and selection of flowers is based on the appropriateness of the liturgical season. More

than one person or family may sign up for the altar flowers during the same week.

Sanctuary Light: The Sanctuary Light is a visible sign of the presence of the Blessed Sacrament held in reserve in the

Tabernacle. It is the tradition of our faith that parishioners make an offering to acknowledge the memory of a loved one in his

or her life—especially appropriate during the week or day of an anniversary date of someone’s death.

Weekday Worship

Tuesday Morning Eucharist is celebrated at 7 a.m. A group of men gathers for breakfast and discussion afterwards and

typically are on their way to work by 8 a.m.

A Noonday healing service is offered on Wednesdays followed by Eucharist.

Hurricane Relief

Episcopal Relief & Development works closely

with church partners after disasters, equipping them

to meet needs of those most vulnerable in their

communities. Currently, our staff is responding to

areas devastated by multiple Hurricanes, and watching

developing tropical storms. Because of our strong diocesan

partnerships, Episcopal Relief & Development is ready to

assist in the recovery of the impacted areas for as long as

necessary. You can help provide critical relief to affected

communities by donating to our Hurricane Relief Fund. To

Epiphany is collecting diapers and wipes to support

MedShare's response to flood victims of Hurricane Harvey,

Irma, and monsoons in South Asia. A collection box is in

Food Pantry Drive for Emmaus House

September is Epiphany’s month to provide food for the

Emmaus House Food Pantry—is a mission of the Diocese

of Atlanta located in Peoplestown, a low‐income

neighborhood just south of Turner Field. Please place your

Refugee Update

Our Refugee family from 2016 has exciting news!

Yaser has opened his own tailor shop at 112 Church

Street in Decatur, open Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3

p.m. He was an excellent tailor in Syria and is glad to

be back working in his profession.

A thank you

Did you know that students from Lovett School have

been staying overnight once a year at Epiphany while

doing volunteer work around Atlanta for well over a

decade? Once again, there were here earlier this

month and here’s is their note to us.

Dear Church of the Epiphany,

Thank you for the generosity of allowing our students

and chaperones to stay at Church of the Epiphany

overnight. Despite many setbacks resulting from

the remnants of Tropical Storm Irma, Lovett's 2017

SING (Service Initiation for Ninth Graders) was still a

great success! I encourage any feedback you would

like to provide regarding our stay.

Approximately 185 Lovett freshman

students volunteered all over metro Atlanta. Some

activities they helped with included: working with

organizations that help refugees, working in

community gardens and community food

banks, cleaning up historical parks and

cemeteries, feeding homeless veterans, organizing

medical supplies for overseas shipping, landscaping

for the elderly, working with the elderly in assistant

living/rehab facilities, as well as many many more

service projects.

Again, thank you and we value your continued

support of the Lovett SING program.

Atlanta Veterans' Acupuncture Clinic offers free acupuncture

for veterans and family members to relieve stress, insomnia,

PTSD and pain Mondays at Epiphany from 6‐7 p.m. No

Haiti Meeting takes place at noon on the 2nd Monday of every

month in Jones Hall. Anyone interested in our partnership with

the Bishop Tharp Institute, a college of the Diocese of Haiti, is

welcome to attend.

Meeting Night: Committees meet 2nd Mondays from 6‐7:30

p.m. We gather in Jones Hall, pray together and then go our

ways. Committee Chairs, please be sure to let your committees

know each month if they are meeting.

ECW Meeting: The Episcopal Church Women meets 2nd

Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. to make sandwiches for Emmaus House.

The program starts at 11 a.m., with potluck lunch to follow.

Community Pop‐up Studio

The Community Pop‐Up Studio for Practicing the Pastoral

Arts is open and ready for the season of balance and

equilibrium and consistent cycles of sun and moon. For the

Holy Comforter Episcopal Church and the Friendship

Center is a diverse worshipping community in the heart of

Atlanta that seeks to restore all people to unity with God

and with each other. The Seedtime & Harvest Gardens &

Greenhouse is a supported employment program of The

Friendship Center, an inclusive community that promotes

the mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing of adults

marginalized by mental health challenges and by poverty.
