“See that one there? With the coloured flags? That’s the lion-taming room. And the big gold tent over there? There’s a maze inside made of marshmallow. If you get lost you just eat your way out!”

Daniel stopped then, fished a golden pocket watch from inside his grey suit jacket. “Blimey, look at the time! We have to open up!”

In the very centre of the Carnival of Wonders stood a wrought iron archway, hung with a familiar pair of rich red velvet curtains. When Daniel and Ellie pushed through them, the sounds and smells of the carnival, the music, the dusky caramel sky,

all disappeared, and they were standing in the shop front.

This had been the first part of the Nowhere Emporium Daniel had ever encountered, when he'd stumbled in accidentally off the street one day, and the sight of the uncountable number of treasures, the smell of dust and polish and old books, still made him smile, took him back to those exciting early days.

The changes he was making inside the Emporium were necessary. The place was too big, too hard to navigate and control,

but this was the one part he would never alter. It was perfect.

Grandad scoffed at me, then turned to fellow guest,

Mr Starkey. “Nice hotel, eh?”

Starkey suddenly started sniffing the air. “Ewww!

What’s that funny smell?” Then he screwed up his

face. “And what’s that awful taste?”

“Eh?” Grandad looked affronted. He sniffed his own

ghostly armpits. “Well, it is not me.”

Starkey leapt to his feet. His face turned bright purple

and his lips even purpler. His eyes bulged and his

hands flew to his throat. For a brief second, I thought

he was doing some kind of weird dance routine.

Grandad stared at him like he was mental.

There was a colossal choke, then Starkey’s mouth

started frothing.

He slumped back

down onto his

seat, and his face

fell forward into

his soup...

PLOP!And with that, he was still.

The whole restaurant stopped. Many, for one hushed,

stunned moment, thought it was a practical joke or

one of those weird theatre dining experiences. But

then gasps of shock went up from the other diners,

some of whom tossed their napkins aside and ran to

Mr Starkey’s table as they realised he wasn’t moving.

Grandad jumped to his feet and held up his hands. “It

was not me! It was not me!”

The first person to reach Starkey was the well-

groomed posh man who had laughed at us in

reception earlier. He’d been dining in the far corner

with his glamorous lady friend, who had changed into

an emerald green evening dress for dinner. The man

carefully retrieved Starkey’s face from

the soup and took his pulse.

“I think he’s dead.”

“Was that jerk for real?” asked Daffodil. “Are the two of us supposed to take on some giant evil corporation on our lonesome?”

“Jeez,” Charlie groaned. “My dad’s a criminal on the run and he wants me to follow the instructions of some glorified laptop he doesn’t trust.” He gritted his teeth. “I can’t do it. I’m just a kid.”

“If you were any more cautious you’d have your own shell.” Daffodil tapped her neck. “I say we talk to Nostradamus. I got a few choice words for him.”

“Don’t you dare!”

“You must be curious about what he wants us to do.” she said. “Or why you’re your dad sounded like this A.I. was in charge of him and not the other way round.”

“No.” Charlie flopped face down onto his bed. “No, I’m not. I just want this to go away. I want you to go away.”

Daffodil plopped down next to him. “You ain’t gettin rid of me that easy, Chaz. I want answers. Like, what are these ‘extraordinary abilities’ Nostradamus thinks you have? Can you fly? Breathe underwater? Run at super speed?” She nudged him conspiratorially. “You got a cape? Or d’ya just wear underpants on top of your jeans?”

“I don’t have any special abilities!” Charlie put the pillow over his head. “I’m completely average in every way.”

The girl wasn’t put off. “But you said you always come in fifth at sports. That sounds like you do it on purpose.”

“You’re a moron. Now sod off.”

“Nostradamus has us both over a barrel, my friend.” Daffodil jerked the pillow away and pulled him to his feet. “And your pop, too, from what I heard. I see how much you miss him and how protective you are of your mom. No matter how crazy this story seems, you can’t ignore it, in case he’s telling the truth.”

“How can you act so chirpy after what you just heard?”

“Cause, if I didn’t, I’d be like you.”Age 12+ | 198 x 130 mm | 256pp | 978-178250-517-4 | paperback | £7.99 | 16 August 2018

J. A. Henderson is an award-winning author for children and young adults. Originally from Dundee, he now splits his time between Brisbane, Australia, and Edinburgh.

A searing, sassy and smart-mouthed thriller — Christopher Brookmyre for teens

Age 12+ | 198 x 130 mm | 256pp | 978-178250-517-4 | paperback | £7.99 | 16 August 2018

It’s Only the End of the World

J. A. HENDERSON• Charlie Ray: like Alex Rider, just with more sarcasm and less patience

• Features one reluctant hero, a tough-talking heroine, a rogue A.I., an evil corporation and a sprinkling of almost certain Armageddon

• An adrenaline-filled thriller with plenty of black comedy where brilliant dialogue meets slapstick fight scenes in a teen take on Christopher Brookmyre

Charlie thinks he’s a pretty normal guy, until someone breaks into his room one night and reveals that everything he’s ever thought about anything is wrong. Jacked up with the Jekyll serum, he's almost super-human and probably the only one who can stop THE END OF THE WORLD!
