T he 2010 CWA season is in full swing and the racing is HOT this year, with exciting youngsters debuting in most regions in which CWA is represented and surging up the top10 standings. This issue features meet reports and ads featuring these up and coming stars, and it will be very exciting to see many of them meeting head to head at this month’s CWA National in beautiful British Columbia. Yes, by the time this issue hits the newsstands, there will be less than two weeks before CWA’s big annual event. This is RFF’s second time hosting the national, and as a regular attendee of this special club’s meets, I am confident they will only outdo themselves. The annual match will be held at the beautiful parklike setting that Linda & Steve Buchholz call home, and will be judged by Karen Lee of Surrey Hill whippets. After the match, Karen and Linda will be copresenting “Whippets 101,” a discussion on structure and the breed standard for old and new whippet fanciers alike. Finally, the racing promises to be spectacularly competitive and possibly only overshadowed by the quality of the camaraderie and of course the FOOD! If you haven’t yet sent in your entries, there is still time (barely) to get them in before the catalog deadline! Preentries close August 11th, and for your convenience, an updated version of the National meet flyer, with fillable entry forms, is included in this issue. Appropriately enough, the next issue of Line & Lure will be our annual National issue, with results, photos and critiques from this premier event. The special ad theme will also be National brags, but regular advertising is always welcome. The deadlines for ads and other submissions will be September 15th. T he 2010 CWA season is in full swing and the racing is HOT this year, with exciting youngsters debuting in most regions in which CWA is represented and surging up the top‐10 standings. This issue fea‐

tures meet reports and ads featuring these up and coming stars, and it will be very exciting to see many of them meeting head to head at this month’s CWA National in beautiful British Columbia.

Yes, by the time this issue hits the newsstands, there will be less than two weeks before CWA’s big annual event. This is RFF’s second time hosting the national, and as a regular attendee of this special club’s meets, I am confident they will only outdo themselves. The annual match will be held at the beautiful park‐like setting that Linda & Steve Buchholz call home, and will be judged by Karen Lee of Surrey Hill whippets. After the match, Karen and Linda will be co‐presenting “Whippets 101,” a discussion on structure and the breed standard for old and new whippet fanciers alike. Finally, the racing promises to be spectacularly competitive and possibly only overshadowed by the quality of the camaraderie and of course the FOOD! If you haven’t yet sent in your entries, there is still time (barely) to get them in before the catalog deadline! Pre‐entries close August 11th, and for your convenience, an updated version of the National meet flyer, with fillable entry forms, is included in this issue.

Appropriately enough, the next issue of Line & Lure will be our annual Na‐tional issue, with results, photos and critiques from this premier event. The special ad theme will also be National brags, but regular advertising is always welcome. The deadlines for ads and other submissions will be Sep‐tember 15th.

I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting some new ones from all over North Amer‐ica in just a few short. See you in Abbotsford!

Who would think that we could get 23 local dogs to our race meet, but that's what we did. Of course, the 9 FTEs (First Time Entrants) on Saturday really helped. The Wyndsor Clan dominated the high point both days. In one high point it was all Wyndsors and Dewey. If I was him, I'd feel a little intimidated. Jean's Miss Bennett took first place both days, Miss Jane came in third on Satur‐day and second on Sunday. Don McGuire's Tiger came in 5th on Saturday, 6th on Sunday and was high score show champion both days. Congratulations to Don and Tiger. Mr. D was our high score veteran both days, coming in fourth on Saturday and third on Sunday. Rounding out the top ten on Saturday were some seasoned runners: Bessie, Miss Darcy, Hallie, Ellie and Sage.

I'm thinking with a little practice those FTE's who weren't in the top ten will be soon. Guin's TJ learned to run in a straight line and made great improvements over the weekend, moving up from 15th place on Saturday to 7th place on Sunday. Other dogs that did well were China, Sage, and Suzu. Rick was a very happy camper on Sunday after Tanner had a little box training, you

should have seen the look on Rick's face when Tanner ran right into the boxes. Rounding out Sun‐day's top 10 were, Bessie, Sage, Tiger, TJ, Hallie, Suzu and Luna. I want to thank all those people who came out to help without dogs to run, Todd, Donna, Ed, Mary Jean, Russell, Emily, Lynne Armstrong, Maryann and Robert. You guys are like gold ‐ no platinum, you’re very precious. You make the difference between a smooth running meet and one that's not so smooth. I'd also like to add a special thanks to Todd and Brad. Todd for doing an excellent job as the lure operator and Brad for being the equipment man and box operator. Thanks for making this such a great weekend of racing.

Sunday match line‐up: #1 Ellie, #2 Luna, #3 TJ, #4 Suzu

Saturday match line‐up: judge Debbie Knutson with #1 Tiger #2 Ellie, #3 Hallie, #4 TJ

We had excellent participation in both of our fun matches. Unfortunately, our Saturday fun match needed to be held on Sunday due to heat and the exhaustion of the people. For Saturday's fun match we had the following 11 dogs entered Miss Bennett, Miss Darcy, Miss Jane, Mr. D, Tiger, Hal‐lie, Tj, Ellie, Sage and Tessa. Debby Knutson did a great job filling in for Emily Uyehara. Sunday's fun match had the following 12 entrants Tanner, Tiger, Miss Bennett, Miss Jane, Luna, TJ, Ellie, Suzu, Bessie, Tessa, Sage, and China. I have to say, all these dogs did a great job after running for two days. I'm sure they'd rather be at home on the couch rather than trotting around in a circle and looking pretty. ‐ Kellee Livingston

ROCK‐N‐ROLL WHIPPET ASSOCIATION OBERLIN, OHIO June 12/13, 2010

Dawn broke into a gray overcast day for us on Saturday. It was very humid. Thunderstorms were predicted but we did luck out in that department. Still the competitors came! Saturday we were inconvenienced only by a short drizzle that had some people put their rain jackets on for less than 10 minutes. We had a LGRA meet in conjunction with ours. The Whippets ran first Charlotte took com‐mand showing why she will be number one Whippet of all time in CWA. Paige (almost a senior) had to battle Tanner and Stretch for the first high point race. By the last high point race was a close one it gave the ARX points to Tanner 3 and Indie 1. The NARX points went to Charlotte 3 and Paige 1.

Brimstone owned by Carol Weber was top dog in the conformation match on BOTH days!!! We know the Mountans were “smiling” as Brim had recently finished his AKC breed championship. Saturday’s conformation judge was Kaleena Low‐ther. She awarded first

place to Brim, second to Charlotte owned by Fred Luehrs, third was Stretch (who picked up a DPC leg) owned by Carola Beranek, and fourth was Indie owned by Debra Borton. Sunday the sun tried to shine but it remained humid. The clouds managed to squeeze a few drops out but no jackets were needed. Best of all no dogs were stressed by the heat. Charlotte again leads the way to win the meet and 3 NARX. But second place was up for grabs!! Paige got hit at the end of the cheap high point race and came up lame. Well Ziggy came out shining! All that work Ule and Con‐nie did with him looks like it has paid off! That gave Ziggy 3ARX and 1NARX with the last ARX point going to Tanner! Sunday’s conformation judge was Ed MacMillan. He also awarded first place to Brim, second to Charlotte, third went to Tanner, picking up a DPC leg, owned by Craig & Sarah Jef‐ferds and handled by Mary Beth Arthur. Fourth place went to Latch, owned by Cora Miller and handled by Susan Bolduc. I would like to thank everyone for coming and helping RnRWA and LARK put on a successful meet hope to see a few more of you next year! ‐ Carl Morgan, President RnRwa and LARK

GOPHER STATE WHIPPET RACING GROUP COKATO, MN July 3/4, 2010

Gopher State Whippet Racing Group held its annual Fire‐cracker Races and this year was a very successful and en‐joyable weekend of racing. The weather cooperated this year and except for a little early morning rain on Sunday conditions were dry for racing. Being July, it was a bit warm, but a nice breeze on Saturday really helped keep the dogs and humans cool. The track at Mary Huff’s property was in excellent condi‐tion which made for a great running surface. Mary spends many hours grooming and watering her track and we lo‐cals sure appreciate it as she also holds frequent practices at her home. With plenty of shade and water close at hand the racers have all they need for healthy racing. On Saturday we had 21 entrants with one FTE and no pup‐pies. Top honors were taken by Mary Huff’s Minnie D with Charlotte taking second set of NARX points. Ziggy and Tanner rounded out the top four slots. Ziggy’s 4 ARX

points were enough for him to earn his ARX title and Tanner earned 2 more points towards his. Con‐gratulations to Connie and Ule for the fine performance of Ziggy. This is also a good time to give a big thank you to Connie for operating the lure for both days of our meet. While I don’t run the lure, I know it must be tiring to have to take on that responsibility two days in a row. In addition to the lure operator, I want to thank Fred Luehrs and Ule James for taking on box responsibilities and for Mary Huff and Jan Siehndel for doing most of the foul judging and helping with the board and scoring. I even ended up taking a few turns as foul judge and was able to improve my skills of seeing through binoculars. Fortunately, all the runners behaved themselves this weekend. Our Saturday conformation match was judged by Lexie Rogers and she had a nice group of 14 to choose from. After putting the entrants through their paces, Midori, owned by Irene Mullauer took

first place and the DPC credit. Johnny, Simmer and Sly where also awarded placements. As many of you know, Lexie has been involved with whippets all her life as her grandmother Carol Juelfs and mother Cassie Rogers have produced many fine whippets in their Affinity line. Right now Carol and Cassie may not be as focused on new puppies as usual, as they have a new grand and great‐grand baby to look forward too as Lexie is due to have her baby in mid‐August! I wonder at what age chil‐dren start junior handling? [Can never get the new generation into the ring too soon!] Congratula‐tions!! On Saturday we also held a raffle with proceeds to support both our local club and raise funds for the CWA national plaque fund. I am happy to report GSWRG was able to donate $55.00 to the plaque fund. Thank you to all who supported the cause by purchasing tickets and donating prizes. While Sunday started out a bit damp, the rain was all gone by inspection time and it turned out to be a sunny 4th of July. It was a warmer day as we did not have the breeze of the day before. But with shade and water, and a bathroom in an air conditioned house, we all survived and even enjoyed be‐ing outside. On Sunday we had 22 entrants with one FTE. The meet was won by Fred Luehrs’ Charlotte who earned another 4 NARX points. Ziggy took second place and the 2 NARX points. Tanner was in 3rd place and the 4 ARX points he earned put him within one point of his ARX title. Jamie earned 2 ARX

points and also her ARX title. Jamie is owned by Juliet Morris, who was happy to have Jamie earn her title on her home turf. Jamie was the only girl in a litter of 8 or 9. Jamie’s brother Buckley was an FTE on Saturday and ended up 5th in the meet on Sunday. In addition to the ARX title another local dog earned his title on Sunday thanks to his perseverance and the support of his owner, Christine Canard, in entering Henry in our meets. Henry earned his TRP and we all were so happy for him and Christine as Henry our perennial Turtle Award winner. Henry may not race down the track at top speed, but he runs and he has a good time. I believe that Henry and Christine remind us of what should be the main focus of racing, namely allowing your whippet to have fun and do what comes naturally to them.

On Sunday Jan Siehndel judged confirmation and she had a very nice group to inspect and work with. After some serious consideration Jan chose Jamie for 1st place, with FTE Da’Vi, Winston and Sly tak‐ing 2nd through 4th. Jamie earned the DPC credit. After a second day of delicious potluck food, thank to Barb for organizing the food and prize table, everyone helped pick up around Mary’s yard before heading back home. Thanks again to everyone for taking part and for pitching and taking care of all the tasks that need to be done. Even with a smaller meet, we seemed to have enough help for line judging, catching, taking down, etc. I know I had a good weekend and I hope everyone else did too. ‐ Steve Shimer

July 10/11, 2010

I began the day by reminding some our attendees and participants that many people paid over 30 dollars apiece on summer days at water parks to be as wet and soaked to the skin in their shorts and t‐shirts as we were when we began the day. Saturday was a day of rain up until about midway through the fourth program. Nobody died of jungle rot, but it was nip and tuck there for awhile. On Saturday we had.... 24 Adults, and One Pup

1st‐‐Ziggy Stardust of Windsor ARX (4 NARX) "Ziggy" 2nd‐‐Licketysplit Fate to the Wind ARX (2 NARX) "Faye‐Faye" 3rd‐‐Windflight's Route 66 F.Ch.‐‐(4 ARX) "Cruz" 4th‐‐Ch. Mariner Diablesse I Can't Believe It's Not Butters‐‐2 ARX "Augie"

were our four top finishers and ARX/NARX point winners. Pup‐‐ Miss Peacock in the Study "Peacock" Match judge Karen Planchak of Lanaken Whippets:

1st‐‐"Augie" 2nd‐‐"Josephine" Ch. Whippoorwill Mystic 3rd‐‐"Vendome" DC Diablesse Vendome Says Surrey Hill LCM 4th‐‐"Peacock"

Despite the weather problems, it was a good day of racing and our match was well‐supported. We had two nice contingents of new dogs from Mystic Run and Licketysplit and they did really well! Even the ones who started out unsure about the whole running in a straight line down the track thing had it really fixed in their brains. It was wonderful to watch dogs who were green progress throughout the day. Sunday, the Licketysplit crew was not able to return, but we had one new good addition in Teresa Fancone and her very enthusiastic show champion and experienced lure courser, Spanky. The rains pulled out and left some muggy, hotter weather in their wake, but nothing that the dogs and the stal‐wart MAWRA crew and their guests could not handle.

Saturday match line‐up: judge Karen Planchak with #1 Augie #2 Josephine, #3 Vendome, #4 Peacock

First, I want to thank Brigitte and Playdate group for introducing so many great new people to racing and our club. Steve Damron came today to lure operate even though his Faye‐Faye was nursing an injured toe after her great racing day yesterday. And Brian and Fran from Playdate are just the great‐est...came both days to help. Their boys Charlie and Marcel are awesome match racers. Fran turns out to be a talented line judge and Brian helped all over the place with whatever was needed. Melanie Merrion was a big help yesterday. Kudos to Maryland Playdate‐‐you guys really have gotten good at all of this!! I want to also think everyone who came, and also Carl and Ule‐‐our out of the area guests who worked so hard in key roles this weekend. Racing is a very convivial activity. If you're used to lure coursing or showing, you are just pretty much dealing with your own dogs and either going home or staying based on whether you won or lost. A race meet is a team effort. Everyone has to pitch in, so we all can take pride at the end of the day in having worked cooperatively to bring off an official event where all the dogs had a wonderful time doing one of the things that is a traditional and his‐toric purpose of the breed. As we help each other, we learn and grow as fanciers and get to know our fellow owners and exhibitors outside the pressure‐cooker cauldron of the AKC show ring. We had newer participants this weekend‐‐Bheki and the Licketysplit crew for Saturday, Teresa Fan‐cone for Sunday with her AKC Bench Champion whippet Spankie, and Annie Andrews and the boys (and one beautiful champion momma dog) of Mystic Run for both days. I have to say, I really enjoyed watching some of these dogs who had only box trained a little but had coursed a lot progress from slow breakers who were swinging wide off the track like coursing dogs to true racers who were com‐ing out fast and running straight down the middle. I think we found some new talent and it was excit‐ing to watch them get the hang of it and progress. Meanwhile, the owners were learning the various tasks of the race meet. Linda Solano's dog was in heat this weekend, and she came out and served as a line and foul judge. She is a great member with exceptional team spirit. We really have to thank her a lot for that. Terri DeLuca our trophy chairman had a nice assortment of prizes for us each day. I got a chair AND a bird feeder, and I can't say that every day I go to a dog event. Carl and Ule did the box, Steve and Carl did the lure with help from Kristen. I boxed dogs until my arms were black and blue. Terri and I were the "box bitches" and we were awesome. Brigitte and her crew did a great job of sorting through close finishes at the line. Today's top 5 in the meet were:

1st‐‐Ziggy 4 NARX 2nd‐‐Stretch 2 NARX 3rd‐‐Bomber 4 ARX 4th‐‐Augie 2 ARX 5th‐‐Cruz

Wow, it was close. So close. Augie and Cruz think Bomber needs a good squashing, but Bomber got clean and clear out of the box in a few races where big points were on the line, and that's how it went.

We had an awesome puppy‐‐Mariner's Chubby Hubby "Bacon". Watch out for this one...he's going to be sizzling when he starts racing in competition. He picks up speed coming down the track like a run‐away train. In the match, judged by Annie Andrews, she found the following:

1st‐‐Stretch 2nd‐‐Bomber 3rd‐‐Ziggy 4th‐‐Maura

Never let it be said Annie Andrews doesn't know what a good running dog looks like because she found the top three in the meet for her top three in the match. Personal thanks from me to Teresa Fancone for handling Maura in the match all the way to her place‐ment. I know it's not Teresa's thing, but she did a great job. We had two sets of birthdays this weekend. Yesterday, Bomber and his sister Darla turned 1. Bomber celebrated by running a 14 on Saturday and a 17 on Sunday. I thought he would be good eventually, but am surprised he was this good this soon. Sunday, Pivoine who races as "Yaha" turned 8, along with her brother Riggins, who no longer races but did get to pounce on the bunny a few times. Yaha completed 4 programs on Sunday with a 7. She has 12 week old pups and was spayed the next day so made the most of her opportunity to complete a race meet at her age. It was a pleasure to me to see such close racing and so many good box breaks and the new dogs get‐ting better with each program. This, to me, is what CWA racing is all about. Close racing between breed‐typical dogs of comparable pedigree who can really test each other as they improve in their experience and conditioning. ‐ Karen Lee

RACING FOR FUN ABBOTSFORD, BC July 24/25, 2010

This weekend would be the first sunny meet this year for RFF, and by the end of it I think we were all wondering why we complained about the rain. With that said, it was still very nice running weather although a little on the warm side. Lucky for us, a nice breeze kept up all day keeping both hounds and owners reasonably cool. We were able to connect some hoses to the school and fill some wad‐ing pools for the dogs to cool down after the race. Saturday started bright and early. It was time for us to do a practice run for the Nationals since the meet was held at the same location that we will be using in August. After much discussion on which end the boxes will be placed a decision was made and we started to unload the gear and set up the field. Note to self bring more sun shade, there can never be enough! We had 22 dogs and one puppy, to start the meet. It was a fireworks "who litter" show down with the whole litter attending the meet. It was going well with all dogs, running hard and fast in such warm weather. Then in the third program the whole "who litter" was in the same race. I think everyone was taking bets and holding their breath to see who would win. But litter sister Reba had other ideas.... no one told her that she had to play nice with the brothers. Unfortunately for Marshall he took the brunt of her ummm... bad behavior, and with the distraction Daltrey was able to sneak in and beat them across the line. With the third program done we broke for lunch to fill our hungry stomachs and try to find some shade. Lucky for us we have expert hamburger chef Randy and assistant chef Karen to keep us all happy and fed, also a big thank you to them for bringing the water cooler both days. Once again there was also an awesome spread of food with plenty of salads and desserts to choose from. The pot luck winner was Margaret with her chocolate krispie treats. Once lunch was over it was time to re set the board, get the dogs dressed and get back onto the field. The temperatures were warming up so we were all looking forward to wrapping things up. The final race was a close one with Marshall taking the lead followed by brothers Daltrey and Fred, sister Tina, brother Milo, and uncle Donald.

Saturday match line‐up: judge Aaron Swepston with #1 Branwen #2 Pete, #3 Tanzy, #4 Smoke

Marshall was the meet winner taking the top points to finish both his ARX and NARX title. Brother Daltrey took the second set of ARX and NARX points. The match was judged by Aaron Swepston from Roy Washington. First place went to Brannwen who won her first DPC points with the win. Second place was our puppy racer Pete, third was Tanzy, and fourth was Smoke. With the match over it was time to pack up and head home. Day two started sunny and warm, luckily there was still a nice breeze to keep the temperature from getting too hot. We had 23 dogs and one puppy to start the meet. With the field marked from yes‐terday setup went quickly. Cooling pools were set up and many canopies put up for shade. Today also had some very nice close runs, which kept all the line judges on their toes. It was an‐other brown dog show down with Daltrey leading Marshall across the line today. It seems to be a pattern with the brothers to trade wins from day one to day two. Sister Tina also had a very good weekend doubling her average from the last meet. FTE Ozzie, who is very noisy at the boxes, also had a good first meet running well in the crowd. Lunch was an event to remember. There was a lot of good food to choose from, excellent hamburg‐ers cooking, and lots of deserts. To top it all off Barb brought out an ice cream cake to share with everyone to celebrate the AC/DC litter’s birthday. It was amazing to see that it was still a cake con‐sidering the temperatures. Today’s meet winner was Daltrey who took the top points and finished is ARX and NARX titles. That’s two brothers finishing in six meets and on the same weekend! Marshall took the bottom set of NARX points and Fred took the bottom set of ARX points. The match was judged by Jade Swepston from Roy Washington. First place went to Smoke, second place was Branwen, third Tanzy, and fourth place to Donald.

And with the match over it was time to hand out the prizes and pack up the field. I would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting the meet with their entries and their hard work. Big thank to the box operators Randy and Steve and also to the lure operator Peter. Thanks to the Swepston family for both foul judging and judging the match. Also a thank you to the line judges Jennifer H., Linda B, Ellen, Beth and Nancy. Thank you all for coming out and lending a hand where you can — we can’t do it without you. I know I am looking forward to helping host the Nationals in August. It should be a great weekend of showing, racing and eating some amazing food! Come on out for a great time in beautiful British Columbia. Jennifer Szabo RFF Race Secretary
