TLMs for children with special needs and aids and appliances

The following services are being provided under this project:

Physiotherapy/Speech Therapy.

Society has made provisions for Physio and Speech Therapist for CWSN adopted by

the society .Three visits of each in a month is facilitated and they belong to reputed

centers. Besides these experts our special educators are well trained in the mentioned

fields. The main aim is to make a sound body system of these CWSN’s as they are

physically weak. Tips are also given to the volunteers/parents/guardians of the children.

Thus in the year 2013-2014 a total of 24 visits were made by these therapists.

Parents Counseling/Meeting.

Every month one counseling program me for the parents of CWSN is organized where

the aim is to reduce the stress/ depression felt by these parents/staff in the process of

up-bringing these children. The problems are jointly discussed and some solutions

found .Parents also reveal their success stories resulting out of the counseling. These

discussions act as a feed back to us hence this activity is regularly organized. This year

12 meetings with the parents were organized and some healthy solutions to the

problems were brought forward.

Vocational Exposure.

We introduced this activity in the year 2010 where in we have provisions for different

vocations such as candle making, stitching, making of sweet boxes, pickle making, art

of painting etc .One vocation continues for a week. Thus four vocations in a month and

the child is open to the choice of choosing his/her ability and in due time be self reliant.

We are in the process to decide for delivering these services to those children who are

not enrolled with us. We are accredited to vocation institute of NIOS (National institute

of Open Schooling) under ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India.

We are getting satisfying results as exposure of these activities is performed with the

help of experts in the field of disability and vocational education.

Yoga Camps.

These yoga camps are organized once a week by an expert yoga teacher. The parents

of these CWSN’s are much satisfied as the yoga exercises act as therapies easing the

mind and body tensions of the child making them more concentrated in skill

development works.

Excursions/ Tours.

The focus here is on learning through entertainment. This program me is monthly,

where the CWSN are taken to a temple, a hill area, a school where there is a playing

facility with other normal children; besides taking them to a town such as Simla, Solan,

Chandigarh, Baru Sahib (educ.Inst.) etc; a joint picnic is also organized with the help of

other NGO’s in Simla. This gives our children a sense of belongingness and self-esteem.

Academic Achievements.

Subjects like Math’s, Science or English are difficult subjects for an CWSN to

understand but still these subjects have to be understood at their level therefore we are

facilitating teaching – learning with modern design teaching aids to the children. Though

all the children do not follow the same aid, some learn at a good pace, others are quite

slow. We conduct quarterly evaluation for academic and non – academic activities and

send the whole process to DIET (District Institute for Educational Training).

Admissions to Government Schools.

In the year 2013 – 2014, our NGO successfully admitted THREE PWD

students to different government schools.

Facility for M/R Certification.

With efforts from our NGO mental retardation (M/R) IQ is now possible( with the

permission of District Authority ) through a competent private practitioner who assists

with the medical board for one day / month so that the parents/ guardians can avail this

IQ testing facility for their children if need be. .This year we assisted more than

_____10___ parents in assessing and certification of CWSN.

Pension/ Scholarship Benefits.

Government is providing numerous facilities for people with disabilities (PWD) but due

to lack of education the rural mass is unaware of these schemes. From time to time we

Page 13: From Director’s Desk: Ganpati Educational Society (GES ...ganpatieducationalsociety.org/webdocs/Annual_Report 2014.pdf · From Director’s Desk: Ganpati Educational Society (GES)

organize door to door campaigns wherein we counsel the parent/guardian and make

them aware to different government schemes. As a result people come to our office or

call us to know further details.

Services to Other CWSN’s.

Since the last two years we have started providing home based services to CWSN’s

who are not enrolled with us .This was decided due to a continued pressure from the

community.

Additional Activities.

A. Self help skills of basic daily use such as eating, brushing, bathing; shoes

wearing, dressing etc are handled so that the child becomes self-reliant in

handling daily issues.

B. .Concept Formation: Money identification, naming and matching, generalization

and similarly identification of the colors in daily use.

C. Cerebral Palsy patients are given special emphasis as they are unable to handle

even a spoon or a glass of water. The general exercises teach them to perform

their motor actions with perfection..They are helped in hand functioning,

Page 14: From Director’s Desk: Ganpati Educational Society (GES ...ganpatieducationalsociety.org/webdocs/Annual_Report 2014.pdf · From Director’s Desk: Ganpati Educational Society (GES)

E. From the year 2009,we started the facility of an day care centre to those

CWSN’s who belong to nearby villages as it becomes more convenient to

pay individual attention to these children .Our special educators are

prompted to prepare their own teaching learning material as per the

concept and difficulty level. Size of the models is kept big for easy

discrimination; ready made models are purchased for those which are not

prepared easily .Other writing materials are given to the children for home

exercises.

F. Training of special educators; wherein short term courses / workshops

organized by various organizations such as RCI, National Trust, CRC,

National association of Blind, New Delhi etc for enhancement of

professional skills. Special educators are prompted to go for higher

studies. 8 programs on various aspects of disability were attended by our

special educators in Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Punjab, Delhi and

U.P.

G. In center based group activities we try to involve each child according to

his/her capacity. We celebrate festivals such as Depawali, Holi, Dushera,

Rakhi etc at our center along with the CWSN’s and their parents.

IGNOU Study Center. Activity No. 4.

Page 19: From Director’s Desk: Ganpati Educational Society (GES ...ganpatieducationalsociety.org/webdocs/Annual_Report 2014.pdf · From Director’s Desk: Ganpati Educational Society (GES)

This program was initiated in the year 2010 with the prior permission of the Education

Department , government of India .As it is entirely need based , now in the year 2013-

2014,after the implementation and the successful results achieved, we can say that this

activity was rightly chosen and put into practice.

The reasons for selecting this program in particular are as follows:

1. Our NGO is already the field of disability and vocational courses including ITI

therefore a continuous pressure of the local level committee (LLC) to open an easy

method of studying for normal students.

2. The geographical situation of these mountains is such that it is not possible to have

senior secondary or higher education universities in every town and going up and down

to a particular campus is not feasible monetarily and time wise.

3. There are about 25 Gram panchayats of three assembly constituencies to be

covered.

4. IGNOU studies are home based studies and anyone at any time of his/her life can

pursue them .We also have regular classes for the students if they wish to come with

their problems. Normally students of nearby villages come to us regularly to attend the

classes

5. Lastly, as one of our NGO’s objectives is to also to re-habilitate the rural youth; the

IGNOU study program is the cheapest and the easiest forms of education that our

Indian Government has presented. We as an NGO act as positive guide liners for the

rural and poor children and youth.
