jacket is Thursday, May 31!

Thank you to everyone who joined me at Town Halls last week. It is an exciting time to finally be talking about the reality of replacing our hospital Inpatient Unit with new construction, as well as creating a new RiverView Clinic, Crookston Campus, that is right-sized for the services we provide.

Beginning this issue, Chris Bruggeman, who is the operational and logistics coordinator for this important project, will provide briefings of activity you can expect in the upcoming weeks. Our campus will become increasingly more active as we gear up for a fall project start.

Last, thank you for your ongoing participation in our feedback surveys as we strive to be the best place to work. We have not yet received the group’s comments or data from the Best Places survey, but we were notified that the RiverView team rated this a Modern Healthcare Best Place to Work 2018!

Exceptional People providing Exceptional Care for Exceptional Outcomes.

Building Project News This week our architectural partner (HGA) and construction manager (Mortenson Construction) will be on site to conduct Schematic Design meetings. User groups that have been involved in planning will have the opportunity to bring the unit and room designs a bit further. Working with full-scale room mock ups, our team members will be able to validate room sizing and location of key equipment and items in hospital and clinic exam rooms. You will also start to see some vendors working both in the hospital and on the grounds. For example, several flags went up on our property and neighborhood Tuesday as OtterTail begins preparations for relocating some overhead power lines. We expect to have mechanical, electrical, and plumbing firms on site next week to get preliminary information about the project and we will have a survey crew from Widseth Smith Nolting on site next week to perform survey work of our property and boundaries.

RiverView Once Again Recognized as One of the Best Places to Work RiverView Health has been selected by Mod-ern Healthcare as one of the 2018 Best Places to Work in Healthcare. The complete list of this year’s winners, in alphabetical order, is available here. Modern Healthcare will publish a special supplement featuring ranked lists of all the win-ners along with the Oct. 1st issue.

“Whether on the frontline or in the top office, healthcare employees witness moments that can either inspire or dishearten them. That can take a toll on an individual and healthcare organizations must take extra steps to ensure that highs and lows during the workday don’t impact engagement or performance,” said Modern Healthcare Editor Aurora Aguilar. “This year’s best places to work, voted on by the employees themselves, exemplify what it takes to maintain dedication and satisfaction among its employees and that is the key to good patient care. Congratulations to this year’s winners and we look forward to celebrating with you in September.”

“We have such an amazing team here at RiverView, committed to the collabo-ration it takes to nurture a great workplace,’’ shared RiverView President/CEO Carrie Michalski. “When we ask for feedback, our team responds, candidly. We are not a perfect organization. We are a learning organization. We are humble about our imperfections, committed to learning, open to new ideas and new processes. We are not afraid to try something new as we strive to attain excellence. Keeping a place on Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work list is a testament to our learning from the team’s feedback in 2017 and using that to further improve. The journey continues every day.’’

This award program identifies and recognizes outstanding employers in the healthcare industry nationwide. Modern Healthcare partners with the Best Companies Group on the assessment process, which includes an extensive employee survey.

RiverView will be honored at the 2018 Best Places to Work in Healthcare awards gala on Thursday, Sept. 27th at the Renaissance Dallas.

Food Shelf Volunteers Needed MonthlyRiverView employees have a scheduled time to volunteer at the North Country Food Bank every third Thursday of each month, alternating between 5 PM and 3 PM. If you volunteer, plan to participate for 60 minutes and wear closed-toe shoes for safety reasons. Contact Kari Moe at ext. 9211 to sign up to volunteer.

The following is a list of volunteer opportunities remaining for 2018:

• June 21st, 3 PM• July 19th, 5 PM• August 16th, 3 PM• September 20th, 5 PM• October 18th, 3 PM• November 15th, 5 PM• December 20th, 3 PM

Laura Trousil is the Employee of the Month for MayIt takes a strong team to get a busy practice running smoothly, but that’s what has taken place in the spine practice of Drs. Hamid Abbasi and Sunny Kim.

Beth Bray, PFS, is quick to credit Laura Trousil, LPN, with much of the credit for making the practice strong, saying: “Knowing the legwork and brainwork it took to get this practice running this smoothly, I feel like Laura definitely deserves to be recognized for all of her ongoing efforts!’’

Thanks to comments from Bray and Amy Seaver, director of Clinics, Trousil was recently recognized by being named RiverView’s Employee of the Month for May.

Trousil started at Riverview in February 2015. She initially worked nights in the Care Center until August 2015 when she transferred to the East Grand Forks Clinic to be Jean Gullicks’ nurse. When Gullicks retired in December 2015, Trousil started as a float in the North Clinic. She worked with Angela Salveson from June 2016 to February 2017. Since February 2017 she has been Dr. Kim’s nurse and began working with Dr. Abbasi in June 2017.

The child of a father who was civil service Air Force, Trousil moved around a bit growing up. She lived in Minot, ND, for the longest stint. She received her LPN from Rasmussen College, Moorhead. She and her husband, David, were married in 2015. They have two children: Henry, who will be three in August, and Lyla, 10 months.

Although Trousil was on maternity leave for the team’s Rapid Improvement Event, Bray says Trousil “welcomed the changes that we had made in her absence. She took those changes and made them work even better, always looking for the next thing that would make all of our lives easier to do this complicated work.’’

And of her honor for her dedication to RiverView, Trousil shared: “I am grateful every day to work with a dedicated and caring team that continually strives to provide exceptional care to our patients.’’

Below are additional comments made in Trousil’s honor:

Laura is very committed to the clinics and the spine practices with both Dr. Kim and Abbasi...Laura has improved many processes making less room for error and improved patient care. She has created standard work for processes and procedures and also developed check lists to make sure each step is completed. Laura accepts any challenge and is very positive and optimistic...I hear over and over from colleagues of Laura’s how things have improved drastically since she has been working with Dr. Kim and Dr. Abbasi. -Amy Seaver, Clinics

When we took over the spine practice with Dr. Abbasi and Dr. Kim it was a lot of learning for a lot of people...She (Laura) worked extra hours trying to figure out how to make the practice run smoother. She implemented filing systems to make things easier to find. She asked for as much information that I could give regarding diagnostic criteria. She took work home with her in order to be sure that she was ready for clinic for the current week as well as being prepared for the surgicals the next week. She did all of this without a complaint or expectation of a pat on the back from anyone...She still to this very day is looking at was to constantly improve and evolve an already smoothly running practice. This not only shows dedication to her providers and teammates, but to our organization as a whole. -Beth Bray, PFS

April Waters Receives Autism Spectrum Disorders CertificationRiverView Occupational Therapist April Waters recently completed her Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) certification, arming her with research-based information to provide specialized training and resources to assist parents, caregivers, and other professionals to effectively care for individuals with ASD.

Waters is the only Rehab Services therapist with this certification. She said the training educated her on several different evaluation tools to measure the skills and abilities of children with ASD, as these individuals often are unable to complete standardized assessments.

“My sole purpose of completing the autism certification is to develop the tools and skills needed to effectively assist individuals with ASD,’’ Waters shared. “With the skills that have been taught to me, I now feel more educated in effectively assisting these individuals to develop the necessary skills to live meaningful lives. Also, living in such a rural environment, the necessary resources are not always readily available. With this certification, I can now assist families who face the everyday struggles of ASD and provide them with tools to increase skills and abilities.’’

Waters provides services in Crookston and East Grand Forks. For more information, call Rehab Services at ext. 9463.

Tips for a Healthier 2018RiverView H.E.A.L.T.H. CommitteeGuard Your Sleep for Better Brain Health

What in your life is worthy of protection? Your family, no doubt. And perhaps material things like your home, car, and meaningful family heirlooms. How about your sleep?

In fact, guarding your sleep may be one of the best ways to help your health. Research links sleep deprivation with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and decreased immune function. And a preliminary new study shows that losing a single night of sleep may cause an Alzheimer’s-related protein called beta-amyloid to accumulate. This does not mean that you’ll get the disease from one night of insomnia or interrupted sleep! (If that were the case, anyone who has raised a child would be on the road to dementia for sure.) But it adds to existing evidence that chronic sleep deprivation could raise your risk of dementia. Protect your sleep like the health treasure it is with the following steps:

• a regular bedtime and wake time that allows for sufficient sleep• limiting or avoiding caffeine in the afternoons• limiting or avoiding alcohol near bedtime• a wind-down ritual an hour before bedtime in which you dim the lights, turn off your screens, and do something

relaxing, like take a warm bath, practice gentle yoga, or do some deep breathing.

Ground Broken to Add Space to RV Clinic FertileGround was recently broken to increase the square footage at RiverView Clinic Fertile.

The addition, done in partnership with Hanson Chiropractic, will allow for two additional exam rooms, a larger procedure room, a more spacious nursing alcove, bathroom and an additional provider office. “RiverView is very excited to be working with the Hanson family in expanding their footprint in downtown Fertile,’’ shared Carrie Michalski, president and CEO of RiverView Health. “As a tenant, we were in need of additional space. This expansion will allow greater flexibility for RiverView to have multiple providers working together in the clinic. As our team expands, we are eager to bring additional providers closer to our patients in the Fertile region and having additional exam rooms and provider work space makes it possible.’’

The project is expected to be completed in August. Watch for an open house once the project is complete!

14th Annual Golf Classic Proceeds to be used for Inpatient UnitIt’s almost time to tee-it-up for the 14th Annual RiverView Foundation Golf Classic! The Golf Classic will be held Monday, June 11th at Minakwa Golf Club, Crookston, and looks to be another fun event for a good cause.

“RiverView Foundation counts on our friends and business partners to help insure that we can continue to provide necessary access to quality health care services in our community,’’ said Foundation Director Kent Bruun. “With past stakeholder support, the Foundation has raised over $320,000 in the thirteen-year history of this event which has effectively supported priority initiatives focused on providing exceptional patient care, always.’’

According to Bruun, funds raised from this year’s Golf Classic will be desig-nated for RiverView’s most current need, an upgrade of the Inpatient Unit.

“The Inpatient Unit portion of the building has served our community well since the 1950s, but its age and limitations are recognized as a growing concern,’’ Bruun shared. “The time is here for a retirement of the space and for our hospital’s renewed investment in an improved Inpatient Unit that will enhance care and better accommodate the needs of our patients, their families and our clinical care team.

“Together we can accomplish anything we set our hearts out to do. Please consider joining in this growing movement of giving for the benefit of our local hospital and the wellbeing of our community.’’

This is a popular tournament and player spots are limited. If you are interested in participating as a golfer or sponsor, please contact Bruun at ext. 9249. You can also benefit the Inpatient Unit project by dropping your donation at the Foundation office near the RiverView Cafeteria.
