broncos: McDaniels brought in worst part of Patriots culture

rising star who had directed one of the most powerful offenses in NFL history as offensive coordinator for the Patriots.

Owner Pat Bowlen hoped McDaniels would bring a slice of Patriots culture to Colorado. Unfortunately, it was the wrong slice. McDaniels learned about life in the NFL from Bill Belichick, the Patriots brilliant, sinister genius.

Belichick has led New England to three Super Bowl titles. He’s also been exposed as a cheater. In 2007, the Patriots were busted for videoing the New York Jets’ defensive signals and fined $750,000 by the NFL. On Oct. 30, Broncos video coordinator Steve Scarnecchia violated NFL rules by taping the San Francisco 49ers practice in London. He offered the tape to McDaniels, who insists he refused to watch it. Is that believable? Scarnecchia and McDaniels worked together at, yes, New England. They are close friends.

In the end, Bowlen appears to have found McDaniels denials unbelievable. McDaniels

has few friends in Colorado, and Monday he lost the one he could not afford to lose.

Rodriguez responded to the former Boy Wonder’s demise with an impromptu, jubi-lant dance on the side of the road.

calhoun: AFA coach worked for Broncos in past

Now, there’s plenty of spec-ulation he’s on the list of candidates for the Broncos’ head-coaching job, which opened when Josh McDan-iels was fired. A Broncos spokesman said it’s “way too early” to speculate on candi-dates.

Calhoun, who is on the road recruiting, did not return messages Monday night. Monday morning, be-fore McDaniels was fired, he was asked about being as-sociated with head-coaching openings.

“Don’t pay any attention to it,” Calhoun said. “If you’re all in, in regards to recruit-ment, and helping your cur-rent guys prepare for their bowl game and all the other things ... that’s peripheral stuff that fortunately you don’t have to be a partici-pant in.”

There are reasons the Broncos-Calhoun rumors make sense, for both sides.

For the Broncos, they could hire a coach with impeccable character who would help the team move on from a videotaping scandal. Unlike big-name coaches on the market like Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden, Calhoun would be in owner Pat Bowlen’s salary range, and he would probably not command full personnel control. There’s a familiarity with Calhoun among the Broncos’ highest brass.

Calhoun says he loves Air Force, but a chance to be an NFL coach might be too tough to pass. If Calhoun left, former Air Force and current Texas A&M defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter is the likely favorite to be his successor with the Falcons.
