Owner Pat Bowlen hoped McDaniels would bring a slice of Patriots culture to Colorado. Unfortunately, it was the wrong slice. McDaniels learned about life in the NFL from Bill Belichick, the Patriots brilliant, sinister genius. Belichick has led New England to three Super Bowl titles. He’s also been exposed as a cheater. In 2007, the Patriots were busted for videoing the New York Jets’ defensive signals and fined $750,000 by the NFL. On Oct. 30, Broncos video coordinator Steve Scarnecchia violated NFL rules by taping the San Francisco 49ers practice in London. He offered the tape to McDaniels, who insists he refused to watch it. Is that believable? Scarnecchia and McDaniels worked together at, yes, New England. They are close friends. In the end, Bowlen appears to have found McDaniels denials unbelievable. McDaniels has few friends in Colorado, and Monday he lost the one he could not afford to lose. Now, there’s plenty of spec-ulation he’s on the list of candidates for the Broncos’ head-coaching job, which opened when Josh McDan-iels was fired. A Broncos spokesman said it’s “way too early” to speculate on candi-dates.

Calhoun, who is on the road recruiting, did not return messages Monday night. Monday morning, be-fore McDaniels was fired, he was asked about being as-sociated with head-coaching openings.
