Sacred Heart Day
Congratulations to the Sacred Heart school community. In celebrating our feast day and focussing on the needs of others, we raised $4,419.50. We began the day with a Liturgy of the Eucharist led by the children of the school and attended by family, friends and many pa-rishioners. Thank you to Mr Maher for preparing the celebration and the children. Also, thank you to Mrs Vinci and the choir for their beautiful singing and harmonising. After mass, while parents enjoyed the delicious baked goods prepared by the P&F, children went back to their classrooms to discuss how the fundraising from the day would benefit the community. They discussed that Caritas, LifeLink and the Loreto Sisters would use the funds to help needy people in the community and develop programs to improve the lifestyles of those who need support.
There was a general feeling of fun and frivolity throughout the school as all involved joined in games, competitions, raffles, crazy hair decorating, craft and enjoying food and drinks. The fair at-mosphere concluded with a money line where the houses Welch, Maguire, Wright and Maguire competed in lining up their spare coins to make the longest chain of money. A special Red Rooster lunch was organised by our school’s P&F and children enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with their parents at this time.
The afternoon continued with the an-nual soccer tournament where teach-ers, students and parish members competed against each other for the prestigious trophy and special pizza lunch. Congratulations to the Year 4 team who won! Our after-noon concluded with house activities where the children partici-pated in fun activities such as tug of war and dancing.
In order for an event such as Sacred Heart Day to take place, there is lot of organisation done beforehand. Thank you to Mrs Donna Bathols and the Sacred Heart Day committee of teachers, education assistants and office staff who began the organisation of the day months ago and have assisted teachers and their classes to prepare their stalls, ensuring the smooth running of the day. Thank you to every staff member and our P & F, who, at such a BUSY time of the school year, put their hectic schedules aside to guarantee our children and community had a fantastic day!
Sacramental Workshops and Parent Nights
Research has shown that children whose parents are engaged and involved in their chil-dren’s school, have a better experience of school academically, socially and emotionally, so it was wonderful to see a large group of parents actively participating in the Sacramental Workshops held last week for both First Reconciliation and Confirmation. Mr Maher (our Faith coordinator), classroom teachers and catechists worked together to present information regarding the theology of the sacraments and how this ties into life in the 21st Century.
The First Communion Family Day will be held on Saturday 5 August for ALL those children receiving this sacrament and their parents.
Staff Changes for Semester Two
At the beginning of Term 3 we welcome back Miss Lauren Shaw who has been on leave for the first se-mester of this year. As a school community we take the opportunity to thank Mr Callan Leach who has replaced Miss Shaw in her position as PE teacher. The PE position not only includes teaching the PE clas-ses in the school, it always involves the preparation and planning of sports carnivals, before and after school training and Active after school sports, so thank you for all these ‘extras’ Mr Leach. Miss Shaw will also return to the position of our Wednesday Kindy teacher and we thank Mrs Vinci for taking on this extra day in Miss Shaw’s absence.
Our 1W teacher, Mrs Debbie Cannell, will be taking long service leave for Semester Two and we wish her all the best for this time. We look forward to seeing Mrs Cannell refreshed and renewed in 2018. Miss Lauren D’Souza will be the Year 1W teacher for the remainder of the year. Please make Miss D’Souza feel welcome.
Practice Lockdown Today the whole school, including the ELC, were involved in an Emergency Lockdown drill. The purpose of the drill was to identify potential issues that may arise in an emergency situation. The staff and chil-dren did a fantastic job in moving to the designated safe areas with minimum fuss. Well done everyone on a positive drill.
Vanessa Alaniz Assistant Principal
We are pleased to have the RAINBOWS Programme once again at Sacred Heart this year. RAINBOWS offers children from families who have experienced a major loss, either through the separation/divorce of parents, through the death or illness of a family member, or who have experienced any other major family transition, the opportunity to meet in a
weekly support group of 3 - 5 students over a period of 12 weeks.
It has been found that when something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. If a parent dies or divorce occurs, not only do the parents grieve but the children do too. Due to their age and short life experience, children find it difficult to verbalise their feelings.
If you feel that your child(ren) may benefit from the programme, and haven’t already participated this year, please collect a consent form from Mrs Hall in the school office. Consent forms need to be signed by a parent before the child is eligible to participate in the programme. Please return signed consent forms to the school office by Friday 21 July 2017.
The sessions will be held at school during school time, with a trained adult working with each group. Our trained staff this year are Reita Wingard, Amanda Banks and myself as the co-ordinator at our school. If you have any queries or concerns, please ring the school office on 9251 3000.
Vanessa Alaniz Assistant Principal and Rainbows Coordinator

Staff will be involved in Professional Development on both 30 June and 20 July.
5km CHARITY WALK— CARITAS We are pleased to advise the final total of the CHARITY WALK which was done during Lent to raise awareness of the needs of others. In total we raised $6,374.50 which is a fantastic effort. $3,000.00 of this was sent to Sr Margie and the Loreto mission in East Timor on Monday and the bal-ance of $3,374.50 was sent to CARITAS yesterday. We are so proud of our students, and thankful for the generosity of the parents and friends who support them. Thanks also to the motivator, Mr Milne.

NAIDOC WEEK STARTS NEXT WEEK
NAIDOC stands for NATIONAL ABORIGINES AND IS-
LANDERS DAY OBSERVANCE COMMITTEE. It is a time
to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander his-
tory, culture and achievements and is an opportunity
to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Austral-
ians make to our country and our society.
This Sunday, a special Mass for Aboriginal and Torres
Straight Island Day will be celebrated. God speaks to
everyone in various ways through many cultures and it
is an opportunity for us to honour the spiritual beliefs
and faith of our indigenous community.
Sacred Heart Day Wow, what a busy day for the P&F and indeed the whole school last Friday, which kicked off with approxi-mately 100 people gathering for the morning tea, followed by the stalls and the Red Rooster lunches.
We are pleased to announce that we made a profit for the school’s chosen charities of $1,214.
Thank you so very much to our wonder-ful volunteers who contributed morning tea items, helped us with the stalls and to deliver the lunches. The day would not have run as smoothly or as success-fully without YOU, so thank you!
We have 50 bags of Fairy Floss remain-ing. If you would like to purchase any or all of these bags at cost price, please email the P&F on: [email protected]
Bogan Bingo We are pleased to announce that we made a profit of $4,008 from this hugely successful event. Not only was the night a financial success for our school but the positive feedback re-ceived from everyone who attended, showed that we have great community spirit within our school as well.
Forest Lakes Shopping Dockets Thanks to our very supportive families, we came 1st place in 4th Term 2016 and 2nd place in 1st Term 2017, as such we received Forest Lakes Forum shopping vouchers to the value of $1,000 and $500 respectively.

SPORT NEWS
AFL REPORT
A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Madaffari for leading the coaching, scoring and everything in between. Thank you to all the other par-ents who provided priceless help. You made the event possible and we really appreciate the time you have given up.
Well done to the AFL boys who fought so hard in every game, some-times against an imposing opposition. You are a very talented bunch and I suspect I may be watching a couple of you on the TV one day kicking the winning goal for the Dockers.
Mr Leach
SOCCER REPORT
Our soccer students continued to demonstrate why they were the team to beat at the recent Lightning Carnival with a strong performance in all their games. They have ended the season undefeated, beating some really strong school in the process. I am extremely proud of the fact that the team was not only competitive, but more so the level of sportsmanship on display at each game was admirable and a pleasure to watch. The student’s efforts not only reflected their capabilities and skills, but showed the amount of time dedicated to lunch time training, commitment to each other during games, motivation to do their very best and wonderful teamwork. A special thanks has to go to Mr Will Johnson who has been helping the students prepare for their games. Well done to all and congratulations on winning both the cup and shield for 2017.
We would also like to thank the P & F committee for the wonderful shirts they provided, which made us not only feel like champions but look the part.

SUSTAINABILITY – PLASTIC FREE JULY
Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of the problems with single-
use disposable plastic and challenges people to do something about it.
If you choose to take up the challenge, you’ll be joining over one million
people, world-wide, from 130 countries in making a difference. At Sacred Heart, we are passionate about re-
ducing the amount of waste we produce and are hoping to take up the challenge of “Plastic Free Term Three”
at school.
A problem... Plastics: break up, not break down – becoming permanent pollution are mostly downcycled (made into low grade product for just one more use) or sent to landfill ‘escape’ from bins, trucks, events etc. to become ‘accidental litter’ end up in waterways and the ocean – where scientists predict there will be more tonnes of plastic than
tonnes of fish by 2050 transfer to the food chain – carrying pollutants with them increase our eco-footprint – plastic manufacturing consumes 6% of the world’s fossil fuels
Every bit of plastic ever made still exists and in the first 10 years of this century the world economy produced
more plastic than the entire 1900's!
With solutions. Choosing to be part of the solution, you can act by: Avoiding products in plastic packaging (choose alternatives) Reducing where possible (opt for refills, remember your reusable shopping bags) Refusing plastics that escape as litter (e.g. straws, takeaway cups, utensils, balloons) Recycling what cannot be avoided
So…are you ready to take up the challenge?
Head over to http://www.plasticfreejuly.org/ and click on the “Getting Started” tab to see what you can do to
reduce your plastic use, and watch this space to see how to make a pledge at school next term!
