Medical gases are indispensable in hospitals. The health and the life of your patientsdepend on a continuous supply of compressed air, oxygen, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and vacuum. It is therefore essential that the Gas Management System operates reliably at all times – round the clock at 365 days a year. In this context, theAlarm Management System is of key importance.

The Alarm Management System (AMS) monitorsthe continuity of the medical gas supply, the performance and the operation of the GasManagement System and the quality of the medi-cal gases delivered. These safety objectives aredefined in the standard ISO 7396-1. In an emer-gency, the AMS must enable the responsible per-son to immediately identify the cause of a faultand rectify it before it adversely affects the medi-cal gas supply.We at Dräger are at your side as your competentand reliable partner when it comes to the plan-ning and implementation of your AMS. DIRECT FEEDBACK LOCATED

IN THE SUPPLY CENTRES Whether for medical gases, compressed air orvacuum: Local operating signals such as 'On/Off'or 'Fault/No fault' provide the supply centres withdirect local feedback on the current status of thesystem. The data is displayed on freely configura-ble LED panels that can be labelled as required(e.g. Monitor L or Monitor LL).

Keep an eye on your medical gas supply, round the clock and in all areas

As part of the Gas Management System, the Alarm Management System monitors the delivery of medicalgases from the central supply to the various points of delivery. Dräger offers scalable solutions that are ideallytailored to the size and emergency response plan of your hospital.

VACUUM SYSTEMS Medical vacuum plants use pumps to producevacuum required for extracting secretions. Theswitching signals from the pumps are processedin the control cabinet Medical Vacuum Control(MVC) and passed on to the the AMS by meansof an integrated data collector.

COMPRESSED AIR SYSTEMS In medical compressed air systems, air is com-pressed by compressors and prepared for medi-cal use. Data collectors record the operatingstatus of the compressor system, the conditioningof air for medical use and the condensate draindevices. The Medical Air Guard (MAG) moni-tors the purity of the medical compressed air inaccordance with the threshold limits from theEuropean pharmacopoeia. Furthermore, sensorscan be flexibly integrated in order to provide values such as volume flow, room temperatureand the dew point in the AMS.

CYLINDER MANIFOLD SYSTEMS Cylinder manifold systems supply the hospital withmedical gases. The Gas Control Station moni-tors the pressure in the gas cylinders and liquidtanks as well as the various intermediate pressu-res as far as the line pressure at the distributionsystem. An integrated Alarm System Interface(ASI) passes the data on to the AMS. Additionalsensors can be integrated flexibly via an AnalogInput Module (AIM) into the AMS in order tomonitor factors such as room temperature and gasconcentration in the area of the system.

TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT For a central overview, the signals from the medi-cal gas supply are summarised on a display in theTechnical Management office or in the hospital'scontrol centre. This may take the form of a simpleLED display (e.g. Monitor LLT) or a convenienttouch panel such as the Gas CommunicationCockpit (GCC 1000). Alternatively, the signalsfrom the AMS can be transmitted via a gateway tothe Building Management System, for example inorder to make use of the reporting functions offe-red by the control system.

PHARMACYThe GCC 1000 provides hospital pharmacistswith a convenient method of monitoring the quali-ty of medical compressed air from their office.The data from the Medical Air Guard and all sig-nals sent by the medical gas supply are transmit-ted to the mobile display unit. The GCC 1000offers special functions such as the collection ofdata and the observation and analysis of trendvalues in order to provide substantial qualityassurance evidence for medical compressed air.

PIPING NETWORK A pipeline system is used to convey the medicalgases from the supply centres to the wards and onto the patients. Here, additional sensors can bedeployed in different areas, for example in order tomonitor the line pressure or the gas flow. The cur-rent signal that reflects the measurements fromthese sensors is passed on to the AMS by meansof an Analog Input Module (AIM). The AIM canalso monitor whether these measurementsexceed or fall below the threshold limits and cantransmit corresponding signals to the AMS.

5 MONITORING OF CLINICAL AREAS The Area Control Units (ACU)monitor the medi-cal gas supply of the individual clinical areas. Sin-ce the shut-off cabinets in large wards are oftenlocated far apart, it is usually advisable to makeadditional alarm signals available in the centralward office or admissions desk (e.g. in the form ofa Monitor 3G or Monitor L). This ensures that thehospital staff is always kept directly informed.

CENTRAL MONITORING AND ALARM SYSTEM

WITH A WIDE RANGE OF FEATURES

According to ISO standard 7396-1, all GMSalarms must be displayed at a central locationthat is monitored 24 hours a day. The DrägerAMS helps you to fulfil this requirement by offe-ring you a method of consolidating alarms for theentire system or for certain areas, such as nur-sing wards or hospital pharmacists. As soon asone of the individual alarms is activated, the com-mon alarm is also set. This gives TechnicalManagement, for example, an instant overview ofthe entire medical gas supply and enables ser-vice work to be organised purposefully and with aminimum of effort.

Collective alarms are especially useful for transmit-ting signals to large control systems handling all ofthe hospital's building services. The control systemremains clear and uncluttered, and since there areonly a small number of data points that need to becreated on the control system, the effort is reducedconsiderably. At the same time, connecting theAMS to the Building Management System enablesyou to fully benefit from your control system's abilityto display, transmit (in mobile mode), store and ana-lyse your GMS data. The corresponding invest-ments in your building services pay off even more.

UNAMBIGUOUS AND TARGETED

ALARM MESSAGES IN ALL RELEVANT AREAS

With the Dräger AMS, alarms can be displayed on avariety of different display units: The signals areshown exactly where they need to be seen and noalarms are displayed to target groups for whom theyare not relevant. Alarms can also be sent to severallocations simultaneously, for example to the opera-ting room, the ward office and the technical depart-ment. This ensures that an alarm is received imme-diately by all persons concerned, withoutunnecessarily distracting any other members ofstaff.The colour-coded signal lights are easy to under-stand: Operating alarms are indicated in yellowwhile emergency alarms are indicated in red. Duringnormal operation, when no alarms are active, agreen LED remains on, so that any power failurewould be noticed. The Monitor LLT features a textdisplay for showing clear instructions. For example,it can be used to display the location of the alarmand the telephone number of the technician to becalled.

Intelligent networking technology for uncompromising safety

A closed network with its own protocol guarantees reliable data communication withinthe AMS. You can therefore rest assured that every alarm signal will be displayed at theintended location in accordance with the predefined signal priority.

PROTECTED DATA COMMUNICATION

IN A CLOSED SYSTEM

The Dräger AMS is designed as a closed systemwith its own cable network and used only for theGas Management System data. This eliminatesthe risk of errors caused by other data traffic andprevents interference from outside, e.g. hackerattacks.The system uses its own network protocol and nocentral computer for communication within thesystem, providing even greater reliability andsecurity. Each device communicates autono-mously within the network and performs additio-nal local functions as required (Local OperatingNetwork/LON). During startup, a configurationprogramme configures the devices in the net-work and ensures that there is always sufficientbandwidth available to transmit all the signals.All devices in the AMS are monitored to be readyto communicate. This is done by each displaydevice in turn sending queries to the device allo-cated to it as a data source. If no response isreceived, the display device shows a communica-tion alarm. This informs the user immediately sothat the cause of the fault can be traced.

VALIDATION AS A MEDICAL DEVICE

Because the GMS passes the gases on directly tomedical devices, it is validated as a medical deviceaccording to the Medical Device Directive. As anintegrated component of the GMS, the AMS musttherefore fulfil correspondingly high safety require-ments. The whole system receives CE certificationon site once it has been completly installed in thehospital.However, external sensors, alarm contacts and dis-play systems can be connected via interface modu-les such as the AIM in order to integrate the AMSmore flexibly into your hospital's building services.This opens up, additionally to the AMS alarm signalsrequired by the standard, various possibilities concerning the central monitoring, reporting anddocumentation of your medical gas supply.

READY FOR UNLIMITED OPPORTUNITIES

The AMS data is transmitted via a twisted paircable connecting the devices with one another.The sequence and branching structure of theconnections are of no significance for this sys-tem. This means that further devices can be con-nected without modifying the existing wiring,which saves both time and money. New featurescan be incorporated within the existing systemsimply by upgrading the network protocol.In addition, external signals can be received viadata collectors and AIM, to be passed on toexternal systems via a GMS-Gateway or a Moni-tor R. Data can also be converted to other net-work protocols so that existing systems, e.g. yourBuilding Management System or an OR panel,can be used for alarms to cut down investmentcosts.

Large-scale systems which would exceed the elect-rical transfer capacity because of the length ofcable (> 500 m) or the number of devices (> 64),are structured and extended by using signal ampli-fiers known as L-switches. This gives the AlarmManagement System the flexibility to expand alongwith the system to be monitored. There is no needto completely replace the system in the face ofincreased capacity or changes in requirements.

The Dräger Alarm Management System is much more than just an alarm system.Because a variety of different measurements can be included, it enables you to pro-actively monitor, analyse and optimise your medical gas supply.

DETECT WEAK SPOTS BEFORE THEY

TRIGGER ALARMS

In addition to the prescribed alarms and opera-ting modes, the AMS can also take and display awide range of measurements. This enables Tech-nical Management to monitor the readiness andperformance of the GMS in detail. By using earlywarning alarms and escalation alarms, faults suchas pressure fluctuations or the danger of com-pressors and pumps overheating can bedetected, localised and rectified before theyreach the alarm threshold. Further monitoringoptions make your medical gas supply safer andmore reliable. For example a suitable sensor con-nected via an Analog Input Module (AIM) canmonitor the O2 or CO2 content of the ambient airat cylinder manifold systems in the interests ofstaff safety.

By analysing the system performance, for examplebased on data from volume flow sensors, you candetermine the hospital's central consumption, theconsumption patterns of individual areas and anyinstances of misuse. This gives you valuableinsights that can be used to improve hospital pro-cesses. In addition, the performance data collectedprovides key information for assessing the scale ofthe supply systems required when planning newsections of the hospital.
