Booming Spotify on sound footing with ad

Downloading is dead: long live 'streaming'. That's the message that global online

music service Spotify has been saying for over three years. As the Netflix of the music industry, the Swedish company

is booming worldwide. But is it fair to artists? And

can it persuade 'traditional' downloaders using iPhones and iTunes to ignore their stored-up digital collections and go with streaming?

"We firmly believe that what people really want is access over ownership," said Adam Williams, Spotify managing director for the UK and Ireland.

"But I don't think that downloading will disappear altogether. Don't forget, you still have people collecting vinyl. In fact, I think it's gone up 13 per cent in the last year."

Back-handed compliments to rival platforms aside, Mr Williams is on a mission to ramp up Spotify's business in Ireland. To this end, the company

has launched several new commercial programs for Irish firms who wish to advertise

on Spotify in Ireland. The pitch is as scary as it is

impressive.

"We know your age, your sex, the type of music you like and other things about you," he said, speaking to the Sunday Independent at Dublin's Web Summit.

"That's a very powerful proposition for certain types of advertisers who want to reach you. We're offering audio ads that target users who use the free PC streaming service, but not the premium mobile service."

One group which sometimes gives out about the

move to streaming is artists. Although Spotify does not

divulge exactly how much it pays per song to bands and music labels, one recent estimate calculated that it required 200,000 plays per month to earn a single person's

minimum wage. "To be honest, that really

depends on a lot of things," said Mr Williams. "It can vary according to which country it's in, the size of the market, the mix of free versus premium

plays and so on. But we very definitely offer a fair deal to artists.

"We give 70 per cent of what we take in back to rights holders

— and we will have paid over $lbn (€741,000) to music rights holders by the end of

this year. Don't forget that we're obliged to pay the licence holders, which is often a different

thing to paying bands or artists directly."

Not everyone is convinced though. Radiohead's lead singer, Thom Yorke, recently went on a rant about streaming

services, describing Spotify as "f**kers" who simply

want to "get in a way" of bands and their audiences.

"It's the last desperate fart

of a dying corpse," he said. "Spotify is suddenly trying

to become the gatekeepers to

the whole process." According to most industry

estimates, Mr Williams

and Spotify are pushing an open door. Although the company

does not give regional

breakdowns in terms of its user base, the service is booming

in Ireland. The advent of

4G mobile services with higher monthly data caps will

increase the appeal of Spotify and its streaming rivals.

"We're pretty confident that people are using us as a great way to get music they would normally not have the opportunity

of getting," said Mr Williams. "It's about access, not ownership."

Spotify is an internet music service that plays (or 'streams') music on demand to your

computer, phone or tablet. Most popular music is there: the company says that it has over 20 million songs.

It's free (with some ads) to use on a computer, while it costs €10 per month to use it (ad-free) on a smartphone.

Unlike rivals such as iTunes, the service does not 'download'

songs. Instead, it plays (or 'streams') them, in the same way that YouTube 'streams' videos.

TECH LUMINARIES GATHER FOR 'ONE HELL OF A PARTY'

ray ffl^ 3 m J ~ -It

CYBER CELEBS: Some of Silicon Valley's elite technology entrepreneurs were wined and dined by an A-list cast of Irish music and movie celebrities on the last night of Dublin's Web Summit last week. Bono and wife AM Hewson (above left) joined director Neil Jordan, John Rocha, 'Game Of Thrones' actor Jack Gleeson and Lisa Hannigan on a pub crawl with some of the most powerful digital industrialists on the planet, in town for the summit. Tech luminaries attending the elite soiree included techno-industrialist Elon Musk, Spotify's Adam Williams (top left), Evernote CEO Phil Libin (above right) and AOL CEO Tim Armstrong. A special dinner in Christchurch Cathedral was hosted by Skype founder Niklas Zennstrom, with food by Domini Kemp. Danny Carthy flying the country flag t is time to salute Danny Carthy of the folk group Fiddlers Green. For more years than I care to remember, Danny has been flying

the flag for more coverage of Irish music on Irish

national radio. While many have despaired at the lack of vision and respect by RTE for the many thousands of licence payers who love these genres of music, Danny

has fought the good fight down through the years.

Next Saturday, 9 November, Danny will speak at the

International Congress of Irish Studies between 2pm and 4.30pm at the Donnybrook

Room, Bewleys Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

"I will address the subject of how a minimum percentage airplay for Irish music could help to increase

awareness and help to create marketing, sales and employment for Irish songwriters, composers, singers and musicians.

"It could also increase the percentage of Irish royalties being retained by IMRO. It would at the same time play a major role in the support of Irish folk culture.

"I have made presentations to the joint Oireachtas

Culture Committee, Arts Minister Jimmy Deenihan, a number of Government TDs, the Department of Communications and the European Commission, and I have been given great support

by a number of very

high-profile people in the Irish music industry.

"Change is now necessary for the development of

a proper Irish music industry for all," says Danny, who

is highly regarded by many good friends in the Irish country music scene.

Danny Carthy brings common sense to his contributions and always speaks from the heart. He is truly one of the great troubadours

PREPARATIONS ARE currently under way in Dingle with the announcement that Other Voices - the world renowned music series that has been recorded in St James Church on Main Street over the past several years - will return to West Kerry on December 6, 7 and 8 for its 12th outing.

Other Voices, which has also hosted special editions of the series in New York, Derry and London, has seen some of the world's biggest names on the music scene perform in Dingle including the late, great Amy Winehouse, Jarvis Cocker, Elbow, The Frames, Josh Ritter and Ellie Goulding.

The news that multi-million selling singer/songwriter David Gray is set to return is causing great excitement, as is the confirmation

Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter

Patty Griffin was also confirmed for the lineup,

IYMAS 2014 IT'S that time of year again. We are looking for some local young acts to join our IYMAS 2014 team for a chance to represent

Waterford and ultimately win a professionally

recorded album for you and your local team produced by some of the Irish industries leading players. The Irish Youth Music Awards is an educational programme for young people aged aimed at creating teamwork and friendship at local level, while providing first contact work experience in a variety of subjects associated with the music business. The initiative

brings together some of Ireland's top music industry personnel

directly into contact with young musicians. This initiative has proved hugely successful and has been given a thumbs up from Hot Press Magazine, IRMA and IMRO, all of whom have been directly involved. The Irish Youth Music Awards is a community based youth music project

for teen bands and musicians aged 12-19 year, across the whole island of Ireland. It is a music led music based project which honours the most effective music projects run by groups of young people each year. The principal aim of IYMA is to give young musicians access to industry professional to benefit from their advice and knowledge. Judging is based on the entire

project from the band, to the crew, to the promotion

and approach to the competition. The overall champion region receives recording time in a studio, and they produce

an album of their own. Because the programme

is entirely youth-led, the young people involved gain entrepreneurial and leadership skills while doing something they are passionate about. Last year over 15,000 young people engaged in the initiative and it is still growing. Interested? Are you aged 12-19 years and are a solo artist, band member, rapper or musician and have two songs, including one original then you are what we are looking for. not into music but want to get involved? Don't worry it is not all just music. The Programme

also focuses on jobs from the music industry so if your into photography, sound or lighting engineering or poster making or even if you are not but would like to get involved there is a job for you. Francisco is based on the extraordinary writings of Captain

Don Francisco De Cuellar, shipwrecked here from the 'Invincible

Armada' of ships sent by Phillip II of Spain to invade Queen Elizabeth's England in 1588. Undertaking an incredible

journey across the North West of Ireland in an effort to return to Spain, De Ceullar gave a unique insight into Irish society at this time.

"Telling this story on radio has been an obsession of our team here at Ocean for a number of years and was a logical next step on from a series of documentaries we produced on the Armada", said Tim Collins, CEO of Ocean FM.

"This success reflects the wealth of artistic talent

based in the North West

and the value of the creative partnerships developed

by Ocean", he said. "Donal O'Kelly brought his unique genius and energy to the project along with talented actors Jaime Carswell, Darina Gallagher and Sorcha Fox", he said. "The musical score by Kila performed by Dee Armstrong, Colm and Rossa O'Snodaigh and Seanan Brennan

was exquisite and the sound production by Ray Duffy another vital ingredient".

"I would like to thank Producer Aisling Heraughty and

Assistant Producer, Peter Collins who worked tirelessly on

This is the second major drama award won by Ocean FM in the past month having

"We have had an extraordinary run of success in the past
