Portals – Definitions and Examples A Web site that offers services to

entice Internet surfers to use the site as their main "point of entry" to the Web. Typically, a portal will provide a directory of links to sites, a search engine, and other services such as free e-mail, or filtering and blocking options for parents. (www.media-awareness.ca)

The higher education version takes the form of the ubiquitous “one-stop,” merging student services, personal organizers, courses, schedules, and the like. (Partnering in the Learning Marketspace)

Portal Engines Are the software

“engines” or “tools” that are often used to construct portal sites. The System is evaluating a number of portal engines. Including those from Sun, Oracle, and Novell (MnOnline will be using Oracle’s).

What is RightNow? RightNow is an on-demand customer service tool

that is engineered to support an organization’s interaction with customers. This support can take the form of voice, email, and Internet.

The System has established a perpetual license to RightNow to currently support: MnOnline, ISRS, PALS, transfer, D2L and potentially virtual reference tools. A number of campuses are currently considering using RightNow to support their student interactions.

Brief history….. The eStudent Services group (predates MnOnline

Council) has been working with the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications on their national efforts to promote electronic students services.

This cooperative effort has lead to the development of an “audit” tool that focuses on the content and level of student services provided and the adoption of a series of web page “standards” that identify the basics for information to be included on the various campus web pages (e.g. last date updated).

More info?Sample standards - Academic Advising Lists address? Full address for academic advising

office/contact (not an individuals address) with zip code.

Lists phone Number? Local phone number, not just an 800 number, with area code for academic advising information.

Lists fax number? Local number, not just an 800 number with area code.

Lists e-mail address? E-mail address for the service should be listed or a method for sending a message.

Lists hours of operation? Offers one-on-one access to advisors? Institutions

have developed different approaches to direct communications between advisors and students. Some provide advising via email and assign each student to a specific adviser; others develop an advising pool with one or more advisers "on call" at any time to respond to all students' email questions. In some places, advisers have established online chat rooms to provide opportunities for live or asynchronous discussions of students' questions.
