“To become truly immortal, a work of art must escape all human limits:
logic and common sense will only interfere. But once these barriers are
broken, it will enter the realms of childhood visions and dreams.”

Letter from the Chairman & President
To our members, supporters, sponsors, and the communities we serve:
The year kicked off in January as Paint Made Flesh debuted
at the Frist Center and was accompanied by a sold-out
symposium on the opening weekend. After closing at the
Frist Center, the exhibition traveled to the Phillips Collection
in Washington, D.C., and finally to the Memorial Art Gallery
in Rochester, New York. The major symposium, presented in
conjunction with Paint Made Flesh, featured internationally
acclaimed scholars and artists.
In spite of economic difficulties, 2009
was a watershed year for the Frist
Center for the Visual Arts. There were
many reasons for this, but first and
foremost, the Frist Center Exhibitions
Department organized, presented, and
traveled two major exhibitions.
During the fall we hosted Twilight Visions: Surrealism,
Photography, and Paris, an exhibition exploring one
of the most intriguing creative movements of the
twentieth century.
“...it is our members, not our galleries or walls, who make museums.”
world-class art to our
region and inspiring
people to look at their
world in new ways.
As we move into an
exciting new year, we
take time to remember
that it is our members,
not our galleries or walls,
who make museums.
We appreciate your in-
volvement and support
and look forward to
seeing you often in
the year ahead.
Twilight Visions traveled to the
International Center of Photogra-
phy (ICP) in New York City before
opening at the Telfair Art Muse-
um in Savannah, Georgia,
in June of 2010. While at ICP,
Twilight Visions received an
excellent review from The New
York Times as well as the
International Herald Tribune.
These traveling exhibitions
increased the visibility and
enhanced the reputation of
our institution throughout
the national and international
art communities.
We cannot begin to thank
our members, generous
sponsors, patrons, trustees,
advisory councils, volunteers,
and everyone in the local
community who all make this
possible by supporting and
embracing the Frist Center’s
commitment to bringing

Corporate and Foundation Support
Last year we had the generous support of a number of corporations
and foundations. It takes significant resources to accomplish what we
do at the Frist Center, and we are grateful for the generosity of the many
who believe in the vision of our institution and the mission that guides us.
