Friends of the CollegeSouth’s annual Friends of the College Dinner was held Thursday, May 3, in the Brockey Center. This celebration recognizes donors who have generously contributed to annual scholarships and the students who receive those scholarships. It is a special evening for students and donors to come together and share what South is really about – community.

Welcome New Staff! Emily CummingsProgram Coordinator for TRiO Upward Bound and TRiO Talent SearchEmily was born and raised in the Los Angeles area and studied both studio art and communications at Sonoma State University in Northern California, and did graduate work at California State Long Beach. It was there that she discovered TRiO programs and became involved in increasing educational opportunities for students. She has experience in all aspects of the TRiO program including grant writing and research.

Gregory Dempsey Jr.Associate Dean, Enrollment ServicesGreg came to South after working in the Division of Educational Outreach for Eastern Washington University as the operations manager for their branch campuses, including South.

He managed all student services departments from student entry to exit, as well as working with the business community to grow BAS programs. Greg holds a Bachelor of Science in developmental psychology and an MPA from Eastern Washington University. Greg’s first day on campus will be Monday, May 21.

Steve MorganDirector of Facilities and Plant OperationsSteve has 38 years of facilities and maintenance knowledge and experience. For the past 10 years, he has served as the director of Facilities, Planning and Management at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California, where he managed college facilities, maintenance and construction, shipping and receiving, as well as college mail.

Bob GlattDean of Hospitality and Service OccupationsBob comes to South after 15 years with the Yosemite Community College District in Modesto, California, where he designed, developed, and implemented their accredited degree and certificate culinary arts program. His industry experience includes training as a chef, certification from the American Culinary Federation, and employment both as a chef and as foodservice manager. He also has a Bachelor of Science in agricultural management, with a minor in wine and grape production. Bob began his new position on Monday, May 7.

Nominated!South has been nominated in the 2012 Washington Best Workplaces competition held by the Puget South Business Journal. To make the finals (and possibly win!), 50% of our full-time employees (faculty and staff) must complete a short, anonymous online survey by May 24. Watch for the survey in your email and please follow the instructions and complete it in a timely manner. Even if we don’t win, the surveys will provide valuable data that can be used for accreditation and help make the college an even better place to work. Out of LockupFormer PSIEC director Joe Hauth sends thanks to all who supported him in the Georgetown Lockup for Muscular Dystrophy. He raised $865 in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Game Day!May is Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Come celebrate in the Brockey Center Wednesday, May 16 from 11am-2 pm. Learn the history and culture of various API communities by learning their traditional games. Food and refreshments will be served. Volunteers are needed for this event. Please sign up in the International Programs Office or the Cultural Center.

2011- 2012 League for Innovation WinnersSouth students Sarah E. Wong and Gilbert Tucker won First Place and Honorable Mention respectively in the Personal Essay category in this year’s League for Innovation Literary Contest. Sarah and Gilbert will receive their awards Thursday, June 14, at a ceremony held in the North Star Dining Room at North Seattle Community College. They will automatically be entered into the national competition held this year at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville Florida. Congratulations Sarah and Gilbert!

They are Certified!Terrie Shattuck, Kristine Dillinger, Bridget Kelsh and Alex Wagner passed the very difficult Certified Professional Horticulturist exam that was given at South March 21. Seventeen persons took the exam; eight of those were students in South’s Landscape Horticulture Program. The exam is administrated by the Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association. Attaining this credential demonstrates a high level of professional excellence.

All three winners are enrolled in Mary Lantz’s painting class. 22nd Annual Washington State Students of Color Conference South was represented by 19 students and advisors at the 22nd Annual Washington State Students of Color Conference held in Yakima, April 19-20. The event brings together more than 700 students from the state’s community and technical colleges and four-year institutions. It provides an exceptional opportunity for students to develop stronger academic and leadership skills and to explore multicultural issues in higher education with other students, staff, and faculty.

Metro Features SouthMetro bus routes moving through Seattle and the Eastside starting in mid-May will feature signs for South’s Heavy Duty Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, and Automotive Collision programs. These programs earned EnviroStar™ certification for demonstrating a strong commitment to environmentally responsible practices.

I always enjoy getting my catalog in the mail because I want to see the latest photograph to grace the cover. I know my neighbors in Southeast Seattle feel the same way. I don’t know if the same photographer(s) take all the photos for the city colleges, but South’s always seem the best!

NewHolly NewsResource Fair President Oertli addressed participants and our community partners at the 8th annual Community Partnership for Transition Services (CPTS) Transition Resource Fair held March 30 at our NewHolly Campus. Under the leadership of Joe Garcia, this is the college’s 13th year providing second chance opportunities to adults in transition from prison/jail. Since the 1999-2000 academic year, we have served over 7,000 clients; of those, 58% joined the workforce and 76% have remained out of jail/prison.

Summer ProgramsOn April 25, about 40 of South’s adult evening ESL students attended a “Get Ready for Summer” event at NewHolly. Ten agencies presented information on summer programs for families and children. Mayor McGinn made a brief appearance and gave a short, enthusiastic speech to the participants. This event is the first of its kind and is the result of the collaborative efforts of the social service agencies based at NewHolly.

South Hosts SkillsUSASouth hosted 60 high school students from around the state on April 13, as they competed for top honors in the SkillsUSA Washington state championships. Their knowledge and skills were put to the test in four hands-on competitions in automotive maintenance technology and collision repair. South instructors and program assistants organized the competitions, with more than 30 of our students serving as judges. Our industry partners, Snap-On Corporation, Dupont Performance Coatings, and PartsChannel, Inc. generously donated tools, materials, and equipment.

Academic HonorStudent veterans can now earn Grades & Development (G.D.) tee shirts for academic achievement. Gray shirts indicate a previous quarter GPA of 3.0-3.9, and black tees are awarded for a previous quarter 4.0 GPA. Student veteran David Diltz (L) conceived the idea and designed the logo, which is based on the concept of a bomb becoming a pen, and represents a veteran’s transition from combatant to student.

New Scholarship GiftsThe Foundation recently received a $20,000 gift from the Hill Family Foundation to support annual scholarships for South students. The Hill Foundation is supported by Harold and Mare Frances Hill. Mr. Hill became involved with South through the President’s Advisory Council.

Faculty Development AwardsThe Foundation recently awarded nearly $10,000 in Faculty Development Grants. Congratulations to the recipients: Howard Anderson and Doug Clapper – Transportation; Larry Angel and Rick Downs – College Transfer; Shireen Deboo – Library; James Lobb – Art; Marla Lockhart – Business Information Technology; and Tram (Joanne) Dang – Basic and Transitional Studies.

Foundation News

Holy Week of Giving Batman! To the Batmobile!South’s resident superhero James Lewis was called via Bat Phone to pick up pledge forms during the “Week of Giving.” Batman presented those who pledged with gift certificates for Bernie’s. Together we raised over $30,000 and counting. We also set a new record with 110 participants! Because of the generosity shown during the “Week of Giving, the Foundation recently awarded 26 high school students scholarships totaling $60,000!

This series will focus on how to provide a welcoming and safe environment for all underrepresented groups. The goal is to provide opportunities where individuals can gain knowledge and understanding to further equity and social justice for students and staff of underrepresented religious affiliation, social economic status, race, undocumented and more. Workshops will include current issues in Higher Ed, panels and interactive activities.

Workshops take place from 1:30 – 4 pm in the Brockey Center.

Web Help DeskThe Public Information Office (PIO) is implementing a Help Desk style ticketing system to track and handle all web requests. This tool is great at managing requests and assisting the follow through process. You no longer have to email the web manager directly as your request will be automatically placed in the queue. This service is available immediately. It can be utilized from your email by simply sending an email with a descriptive subject to [email protected] .

Please begin using this system immediately for all web page requests that include:

• Events, dates, times, and Information• Updates to documents• New links, concerns, broken links, expired

information and content• New web pages, photos, HTML forms• Web technology requests

This new system will facilitate more efficient expediting of requests.

You may still want to email the web manager directly for meeting requests, advice concerning South’s policy for creating web sites, and any other special web needs. Remember, “ssccweb” is for web requests only. Please continue to use “sscchelp” for helpdesk needs.

Update

March 6The victim parked his car in the South parking lot while he attended an information session on campus. When he returned, he discovered his vehicle had been hit and suffered extensive damage by another car. The victim’s vehicle had been parked just outside the range of the parking lot camera.

March 8Campus security responded to a call from the ESL department reporting that a student was the victim of a robbery at the campus bus stop. The student was approached by an individual who asked her for the time. When she used her cellphone to show the suspect the time, he grabbed it and ran towards the north side of campus. The victim was advised to call her service and shut the phone down.

March 12Security was called to respond to a report that a former student was disrupting students in the Auto Body Repair Center. The former student took off in his car, but first stopped to take a picture of another student’s truck. The Seattle Police Department was called.

March 15A student put his backpack down in the Brockey game room and shortly after it was taken by an unknown suspect. The backpack contained a debit card, which was used by the suspect that day. The victim was advised to cancel the card and call Seattle Police Department. The card was used for several subsequent transactions.

April 3A student parked his car in the South lot and proceeded to class. He believes he dropped his car keys, cellphone, and glasses on the way to class. The car was taken off campus by an unidentified suspect. Security cameras were able to capture the suspect’s car.

April 6A student placed her wallet in a locker in the Pastry lab. When she returned, she discovered the wallet was missing. A driver’s license, ORCA card, student ID, and debit card were missing. The debit card was subsequently used by the suspect.

April 11Two students were standing in the courtyard outside Bernie’s’ when the car alarm on one student’s car went off. The student noticed a vehicle backing slightly into his car. A woman got out and ran away before the student could speak to her. The student noticed there was some damage to his car and contacted Campus Security. Security noted that the woman’s car was a foot over the line and into the spot where the

student’s car was parked. The damage was limited to the bumper area.

April 11There was a report to Campus Security that two students were rolling a marijuana cigarette outside the Brockey Center. One student physically resisted being detained and was not cooperative. The student was released as his behavior was creating an unsafe environment. The two students left campus via the South lot.

April 14An attendee at a non-South event reported her laptop was missing. Campus Security checked the campus for the laptop but it was not found.

April 17Several lockers in Cascade Court were broken into and one locker suffered extensive damage. The locks had been pried open. Campus Security will contact the locker owners.

April 21A resident on the north side of the Arboretum contacted Campus Security and reported a large party going on in the Gazebo. Campus Security advised the caller to contact SPD and then drove to the Arboretum. He drove around the area checking for activity but found none. SPD arrived and encountered two individuals who appeared to be intoxicated. Neither student was detained after it was determined they were not in need of medical attention or were planning to drive their car home. One student took the bus home and SPD escorted the other to their residence. SPD did not issue a citation to either party.

April 25A student reported to Campus Security that the two tires on the passenger side of her car had been slashed. Campus Security brought the student to the automotive building and several students got the car back into driving condition. The parking lot security camera will be checked.

April 26Three lockers in the woman’s pastry restroom were broken into when the locks were cut. No items were taken, but other locks have been cut recently and several other lockers show signs of tampering. There are possible suspects, but they have not been positively identified.

Readerboard PoliciesSouth now has four electronic readerboards along 16th Avenue SW!

The Public Information Office is ecstatic, but no one is happier than Tom Tower. Thank you Tom for all those years you spent climbing up a ladder and changing the signs letter by letter, in all kinds of weather.


Guidelines regarding requesting announcements.

The readerboards are for college-sponsored and college-related events. Examples include student activities, job and information fairs, wine and garden events, and visitor/special guest welcomes. Sorry, we can’t put your birthday up there.

If you would like a readerboard announcement, please email Mary Kohl with the message wording including the name, time, place, and date of your event. Please provide as much notice as possible so your message can be scheduled in a timely manner.

There are only four screens so PIO makes judgments regarding priority of placement and rotation. Last-minute situations arise when an important meeting or event has been scheduled with very little notice, which may necessitate schedule adjustments.

No bells or whistles. Sorry, our official variance prohibits the use of electronic special effects like fireworks, wine corks popping, bulbs blooming, or the like.

411 on the 934 and EmailTick TockThe clock’s ticking on the old Seattle Community Colleges prefixes. Remember 587, 903, 526, 985, 763, 768, and 10 others? Their days are numbered. 934 is it!

What are we doing to notify our community?Late last year, we rolled out intercept messages for callers still using the old prefixes to reach the Seattle Community Colleges. The “courtesy connect” intercept messages advised callers that the prefix they’d dialed had changed to ‘934’, then the “courtesy connect” completed the call.

Beginning in early February, this intercept changed to one that advises callers of the prefix change, but doesn’t complete the call. This will further encourage callers to use ‘934’ to reach the Seattle Community Colleges, as they’ll be advised to hang up and redial using the new prefix.

What can you do?• If you haven’t done so already, please use ‘934’• Change your email signature to reflect the new prefix

and new email address: first name.last [email protected]• Let your students, colleagues, vendors, etc., know of

the change.• Change your contact information on any distribution

lists you may be a member of.

Does this change include fax numbers?Yes, fax numbers have also changed to the 934 prefix. You’ll want to change your fax cover sheet information to reflect the new number.
