Happy New Year Friends, I trust you had a wonderful holiday season and 2017 was a great year. The holidays are a special time of the year to reflect and to be thankful for all the blessing we have received.
All of us here at the Friends of the Army Women’s Association would like to take this time to thank each and every one of you! You all are the reason why we do what we do. We can’t thank you enough for your support.
Your continued confidence and trust in our team makes the museum the place it is today. We are so very thankful to have the privilege of being your friend and a supporter of the Army Women’s Museum.
Great things are happening this year and we can’t wait to share them with you in the coming months. I look forward to hearing from you over the next few months and hope to see you in the fall. In the meantime; I wish you good health and best wishes for a wonderful 2018. It’s going to be a BANG of a year!
Sincerely, Delinda Creal President

From our Museum Director… Things have been as busy as ever at the museum. The design of the new galleries has been moving at a brisk pace! It is a very exciting process, especially to see the plans begin to develop into models and elevations of the exhibit components. The museum’s galleries will close to the public on May 1, 2018 and will remain so until early October. This is to allow for the removal of the existing exhibits, installation of new carpeting, installing the new exhibits and completing the lighting plan. The museum will remain open for programming. A new art exhibit will be installed as will a few temporary exhibits in the foyer area.
Plan for a November 2, 2018 grand re-opening of the galleries. It will be an exciting day as the museum ushers in a new era in its long history of interpreting women’s contributions to the Army. Below, you will see some of the exciting design features in the gallery schematic.
~Dr. Françoise Bonnell, Director
Five New Galleries
Each of the 5 galleries will have an entry pillar. It will include the title, a timeline and an introductory text. They are 9’ tall and obelisk-shaped.

Every year the Army Women’s Museum supports students across the country with their National History Day projects. What is National History Day you ask? It is an annual national contest that encourages students to conduct historical research on a topic of their choice and enter their findings at local competitions. The winners of local contests can advance all the way to the national contest held at the University of Maryland at College Park every summer.
A theme is chosen for the contest each year. This year’s theme, Conflict and Compromise in History, lends itself particularly well to sharing the story of the Women’s Army Corps. The AWM staff has been inundated with requests for information from students from seven different states. Some students and their families have traveled from places like Pennsylvania and New York to visit the museum in support of their projects.
The students are completing their projects now and beginning to enter local competitions. Fingers crossed their hard work will take them to the top where they can continue to share the incredible history of Army women.
Museum Education reaches across the country!
These 8th graders made the trip down from New York to do research at the Army Women’s Museum for their NHD Project.
Educator Amanda Vtipilson and Archivist Ali Kolleda were interviewed via Skype by two 7th grade students from California about WACs in World War II.
Education and Outreach will continue during the museum’s renovation!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
To the right: The museum was part of a Fort Lee WWI Centennial living history event. Ron Bingham led the program and arranged for dozens of re-enactors who set up “camp” in front of the museum. Hundreds of people attended this living history event, ending with a retreat ceremony at the flagpole.
Holiday cookies baked by Mary and sent by Betty to the museum to share with Soldiers. Quartermaster and Ordnance AIT students enjoyed having a little bit of "home" while here at Fort Lee through the holidays.

PRESERVE THE LEGACY CAMPAIGN
FAWMA's fundraising campaign in support of the Museum's transformation officially has reached 25% as of Dec 31, 2017. The initial phase solicited donations from individuals and various military associated organizations. We have collected $76,468.00 in donations towards our goal of $300,000. As you can see, we are a bit behind in receiving donations and need your help in attaining our goal. Any donations are appreciated as we believe supporting the Army Women's Museum is a worthwhile cause. We believe preserving the legacy of women's courage and sacrifice helps in building character and strength in our young men and women and shapes them into future leaders. FAWMA will begin the next phase of fundraising by approaching foundations and corporations. A major requirement is life-casts that will be set on a pedestal striking a pose that every person visiting the museum will remember. Each figure costs about $15,000 and the museum has plans for five, for a total expense of $75,000. We also need support for the Women in War panels and Memory Benches that will be part of our Museum Reflection Garden. We will be asking you...our wonderful supporters to consider monthly giving and planned giving opportunities. Our hearts are in this fundraiser because we believe honoring women's contributions helps to build a stronger future. As a reminder, while the museum receives funding from the Army, it also relies on FAWMA for support to fund certain exhibits, hosted events for veterans and retirees, and other day to day expenses. Help us Preserve the Legacy.
