FOLL BOARD MEMBER NEEDED
In June the Friends of Lewiston Library Treasurer’s
position will be vacant. This is a board position and
MUST be filled to ensure FOLL will continue to exist
after May 31st.
FOLL was founded in 2003 by Lewistonites who
wanted to make sure Lewiston would have a library
and to provide it with funding & assistance as needed.
PLEASE seriously consider assuming the treasurer’s
position. Doing so will ensure that FOLL can contin-
ue to provide our library with funding for needs, pro-
jects, additional programming and events for the
community.
FOLL NEEDS YOU!!
BOOK REVIEW
The Magician’s Lie Falling under the
spell of a deceptive performer By
Greer Macallister
Fiction/Historical Fiction/Debut Fiction
Set in the early 20th century, poet Greer
Macallister’s haunting first novel is a compelling mys-
tery. One night in Waterloo, Iowa, the Amazing Arden,
one of the first American female illusionists, mesmeriz-
es her audience with the classic “saw through man in a
box” trick. On this particular night, she decides to use
a fire ax rather than a saw. Was she simply altering her
illusion, or carrying out a murder? And the man in the
box? Is the slain man really her husband? Detective
Virgil Holt is determined to find the answer.
Macallister’s painstaking descriptions of the costumes,
technique and trickery involved in Ada’s work as an
illusionist are unparalleled. Readers who enjoyed Wa-
ter for Elephants or The Night Circus should pick up The
Magician’s Lie and get lost in the mystery of magic.
Isabella The Warrior Queen The
Queen who Made her Mark By Kristin
Downey
Nonfiction/Biography & Memoir
From “Game of Thrones” to The Pillars of
the Earth, popular culture offers up medie-
val stories where royals grab for power, where crucial
alliances are built between church & state, where im-
portant people suddenly fall over dead after a sumptu-
ous meal, poisoned by a hidden rival. But this world
did, in fact, exist, and the subject of Kirstin Downey’s
fascinating new biography, Isabella: The Warrior Queen,
maneuvered through it with unlikely and thrilling suc-
cess.
Most have heard of Isabella and Ferdinand, the mon-
archs who commissioned Columbus’ famous voyage,
but what is less widely known is that Isabella ran the
kingdom while Ferdinand merely signed the papers.
Downey is a brilliant storyteller. Despite the difficul-
ties posed by a limited and inevitably incomplete ar-
chive, she writes with eloquence and intensity about
Isabella’s life. And readers will quickly see why she
chose to write about this medieval queen, whose life
often seems pulled from the pages of a novel.

A Wolf Called Romeo By Nick Jans
Nonfiction/Science & Nature
Nature writer Nick Jans first spotted the
large tracks of a wolf while cross-country
skiing near his home in Juneau, Alaska, in
December 2003. Two days later, while
relaxing in his hot tub, he caught a glimpse of the ani-
mal itself. Nick raced out to see him, and soon he
and his wife, Sherrie, became infatuated with the
beautiful black wolf.
So did many others. The wolf was exceptionally
friendly, appearing frequently and frolicking with dogs
strolling with their owners in the shadow of the
Mendenhall Glacier.
The Jans were so infatuated that they cancelled a Christmas vacation on a Mexican beach, preferring to
stay to see this newcomer. One day Sherrie named
him Romeo, and the name stuck. A Wolf Called Romeo
is Jans' love letter to this wild creature who touched
their lives
