    FRIENDSOF ASHBY(FOA)PRESIDENTS REPORT

2010 Summary and Plans for 2011

2010 marks the second year of operation for Friends of Ashby Primary School(FOA). FOA helps to build the Ashby community and enrich the learning

environment for the schools children through social events, fundraising and theengagement of parent volunteers.

In 2010 Friends of Ashby engaged in a variety of activities to meet these goalsincluding: the Pako Festa (parade and stall), Thomas Fun Run Stall, Trivia Nightand Silent Auction, Mothers Day and Fathers Day stalls, Lets Get Growing LivingFundraiser, the Art Show, Gaga Pit Art Cards, Leaf Your Mark, the Pako ChristmasTree and UCI Bike, Teacher Appreciation activities, Classroom Support Team andclassroom support activities, Family Information Forms and Class Friendship lists,Tutti Fruitti Thursday, Coffee Hours and Movie nights, School Signs, Sick RoomLinens, School grounds work, Grant Application development, Entertainment

Books, and supporting 2011 Prep Parents morning tea.

We are pleased to report that in addition to building community and helping toprovide meaningful opportunities for parent and friend involvement, in 2010 FOAraised almost $10,000 through events, fundraising activities and grants. With thismoney we were able to assist the school by purchasing about $1,000 worth ofnew readers, new furniture for the Grade classroom, 2 mobile learning centresfor the Grade 5/6 classrooms, computer headphones for all classrooms and thecomputer learning centre, building materials for the Garden/Chook Shed, a widevariety of gardening tools and supplies, shelving and storage containers, doormats for all doors in the building, supplies for the fairytale mural in the JuniorPlayground, and Peter Roberts cds for all classrooms and the commitment of$1,500 to support the 2011 classroom kitchen program.

All of this would not have been possible without the support of our resourceful andcommitted school staff and our many, many volunteers. Friends of Ashby wouldlike to take this time to thank all of the volunteers who have been engaged insome way, big or small throughout the year, whether chaperoning an excursion, soliciting donations for the Trivia Night, cutting up fruit and vege, manning one ofour stalls, helping out in the garden, participating in a working bee, or helping inthe classroom:

A special thank you to our 2010 officers, Di Gillick Thompson, Treasurer, TracyRaby, Secretary and Cynthia Scherer, President for their leadership and hardwork.Below are the major activities FOA proposes to take on in 2011. The major focusof our 2011 fundraising activities will continue to be the schools kitchen/gardenprograms and the school concert/performing arts program (with FOA funding it is

hoped to increase the number of terms the school will be able to employperforming arts teaching staff).

    Proposed 2011 Events/Activities

Below are the major events/activities we have currently identified for 2011:

    Term 1:

Pako Festa In 2010 we marched in the parade and manned a stall we willengage in both activities again in 2011.

Hot Cross Bun Fundraiser while a last minute fundraiser the last two years,

FOA has agreed that we should support the voucher version of thisfundraiser in 2011 (we actually sell vouchers which can be redeemed for theHot Cross Buns, not the Hot Cross Buns themselves).

Entertainment books these books will be available for sale through theschool beginning in March.

Rotary Thomas Fun Run Stall last year at the last minute FOA manned astall at this community event which targets primarily pre-schoolers. Wewere invited to host a stall again in 2011 and have agreed to do so. About2,000 people attend this event, and we believe this is a nice way tointroduce the community to the school and to do some limited fundraising.

    Term 2

Trivia Night and Silent Auction this event continues to be our largestfundraising event of the year. In addition, its just a fun activity for parentsand friends to participate in. We will continue to look for more ways tocapitalize on the silent auction component of this event. We have alreadyagreed to utilize any funds raised through this event to support the schoolperforming arts/school concert program.

Mothers Day Stall we look forward to providing students with aninexpensive and fun way to celebrate their mums special day.

    Term 3:

Fathers Day Stall we look forward to providing students with aninexpensive and fun way to celebrate their dads special day.

Lets Get Growing Living Fundraiser in 2010 we took on this new fundraiserwhich offered organic greenhouses, herb bags and seeds. We found thisevent successful and easy to run and look forward to doing it again in 2011.

    Term 4:

Art Show We will continue to support this event as a fundraiser for theschools art program and look for ways to expand this events fundraisingpotential.

New Parents Morning Tea FOA believes it is important to engage incomingprep parents as soon as possible to help create a culture of parentinvolvement and support. If we can set expectations early when new

students start families will already understand and be supportive on ourculture of engagement.

    Other activities:

Farmers Market/Vege and Herb Stalls FOA is keen to continue hostingstalls which feature produce from the school garden. In 2010 two stallsraised almost $400.

Family Information Forms and Classroom Friendship lists tried for the firsttime in 2010 we look forward to continuing to understand how families canbe resources to the school.

Parent Managed Headlice Program this activity provides an importantservice to the school community helping parents to identify headlice andmanage headlice when detected on their children.
