- Mel’s Op shop

The Op. shop opened on 28th Septem-

ber 2010. It replaced the twice yearly

“Garage Sales” which were held at

Cromwell Road. Space has been allo-

cated opposite “Arnold’s Place” and

also prominently

positioned along

the wide frontage

of the building.

The area is bright

and well lit with a

good window dis-

play area. A sort-

ing and stock

holding area is

adjacent. The Op

Shop has been

well supported

through the gen-

erosity of many

people.

It continues to

improve, having a

continuing supply

of good quality

clothing, house-

hold goods and interesting collect-

ables. With continued interest we ex-

pect that Mels Op Shop will continue

to grow and provide a much needed

service to the community and hope-

fully generate enough income to help

offset the running costs of the prem-

ises.

The name Mel’s Op Shop was chosen

by the Management Committee in rec-

ognition of the hard work and exper-

tise of Mel Elphick over many years of

service with Community Food SA. Mel

put in untold hours of time preparing

and working on the twice yearly Ga-

rage Sales which were held at the

Cromwell Road Shop.

Preparation space and storage were at

an absolute minimum there. Volunteers

worked at times under harsh conditions

with virtually no air-conditioning and

sharing workspace with warehouse

stock and packaging materials. It is no

wonder that the team of volunteers

working in Mel’s Op Shop now can

appreciate the spacious and comfort-

able conditions we work in.

Although the Op Shop which is man-

aged by Marina has an interested and

dedicated group of volunteers, we are

always happy to welcome others who

feel that they have a few spare hours a

week they would like to spend with us.

Working in Mel’s Op . Shop

To volunteer, contact

Dianne or Neville on

8262 7345, or drop in

and say g’day—

Tuesday to Friday

9.00am to 3.30pm

Volunteers are always

welcome to join the

team and anyone with

any previous experi-

ence in lunch trade and

coffee making would be

most welcome. Project

Officer, Dianne Reed

will be pleased to have

a chat with you.

- Arnold’s Place – popular place to meet for coffee & a chat!

Planning of the layout of the 50 sq.m of space allowed for ‘Arnolds Place’ to have

a roomy and prominent position at the front of the shop.

‘Arnolds Place was so named after Arnold Melbourne who had played such a large

part in the early development of what was then known as Enfield Community Food

Centre.

Arnold’s Place has proved to be a special place, a place

where customers and volunteers gather to catch up with

friends. Why not pay a visit soon.

To volunteer, contact Marina or

Neville on 8262 7345, or drop in

and say g’day—Tuesday to Friday

9.00am to 3.30pm

Christian Service Learning/Workplace Learning

Community Food SA offers much more than groceries, cake, coffee and second hand

goods. Another aspect of our work has been providing placements for students from a

number of different educational institutions which we have been doing since the early

1990’s. These placements are either Christian Service Learning or Workplace Learning

and provide opportunities for students to participate in the workplace.

Gepps Cross Special School was one of the first to approach us and we hosted

groups of up to 7 or 8 students on a weekly basis for quite some years. Australian

Lutheran College has also sent students to us since the mid 1990’s.

This year we have hosted a total of 14 students from eight separate schools including

St Paul’s College, Eynesbury, Blackfriars, Wilderness, Windsor Gardens Voca-

tional School, Thebarton Senior College and Adelaide Secondary School.

One Year On

Just over a year ago, the move from Cromwell Road Kilburn to our present home at Gepps

Cross was still being negotiated. There were times of doubt, times when it was thought that

maybe the next stage of our growth was not to be. The very stringent regulations and re-

quirements to set up were constantly thrown up at us, one step forward and two back it

seemed. Throughout those months of negotiations and planning we continually believed

that the final outcome would not be made by us, but by prayers and by asking God’s guid-

ance and help. The decision was made for us!. Neville with unwavering faith always man-

aged to help us keep a positive outlook. Now only 11 months into our move to Gepps Cross

we can see that a great need is being met here.

- The Grocery Shop.

Our grocery section is a most notable improvement made by our move to Gepps Cross. The 150 sq.m of floor space gives our customers much more shopping comfort, it is particu-larly helpful to have the space avail-able for customers with walking aids particularly in the case of wheel chairs, room also for mothers with young children in pushers. We have been blessed to obtain the

services of a former Woolworths Su-

permarket Manager who joined us as

volunteer Grocery Shop Manager in

October 2010. Under his manage-

ment the shop has taken on a very

professional look. The range of stock has

increased significantly, while the stock on

the shelves is well planned and attractively

arranged.

Unfortunately we have lost a number of our

old customers from Cromwell Road because

of the lack of public transport from Kilburn

to Gepps Cross . It is noticeable that many

who were not aware of CFSA are calling in

whilst shopping at other businesses in the

shopping centre. They are generally im-

pressed with what they find and go away

very pleased with what we have to offer.

Celebrating our first Year at Gepps Cross

Community Food SA volunteers are very proud of the recent award of the Medal of the Order of Australia to be presented to our Manager Neville Mibus at Government House on 8th September.

Neville has managed the Food Centre for some 21 years and has led the many volunteers who have worked here over those years in our endeavour to help those in need. Neville has never erred in his faith in God and through Him has brought us all along to where we are today.

We congratulate Neville on this outstanding achievement and invite you to join with us and Peter Goers of the ABC, the self confessed supporter of Volunteers and Op Shops in officially thanking Neville on our behalf at

10.00am Friday 23rd September 2011

Peter will also be dedicating the name of Mels Op Shop which is to acknowledge the many years of service given by Mel Elphick to the Food Centre in general, but more par-ticularly for her work for the ‘Garage Sales’ held at Cromwell Road over many years.
