Dear Friends of the Gallery
Well here we are at the end of another amazing year of exhibitions, events and activities!
We began 2017 with the truly stunning National Photographic Portrait Prize 2016 from the National Portrait Gallery, one of my favourites, but there was plenty more to come!
The ‘Alice Springs Beanie Festival’ came to Port Pirie on its national tour ‘Colours of the Country 111, what fun! The humble ‘beanie’ as an art form.
There were many other highlights during the year.
What a privilege to host ‘Rough Medicine; Life and Death in the Age of Sail’ from the SA Maritime Museum with that hilarious performance by the ‘barber surgeon’ in the Port Pirie Regional Library, enthralling school children with his crazy antics as the ships surgeon on the high seas!
‘Class A ‘exhibitions such as these from significant arts institutions are vitally important to the Gallery to enhance the diversity of arts and culture we aspire to deliver in the exhibition program.
The story of Port Pirie and the Smelter was celebrated with the last of the trilogy of history exhibitions ‘Transportation and Transformation; a city always evolving’. Again breaking visitor records!
We move into the holiday season with photography, paintings in oils, acrylics and watercolours by local and regional artists, Clan Rodda, Annette Marner and Kirstie Jamieson and from the Adelaide Hills Proo Geddes, Sandi Hill and Alison Waye.
2018 will see a few changes as Gallery operations come under the umbrella of the Port Pirie Regional Council. As you may be aware funding from other sources such as Country Arts SA, who have supported galleries over many years, no longer directly fund regional art galleries. We had to look for an alternative to take us into a sustainable future, without losing our ‘Class A’ accreditation and quality of program delivery.
What a busy year; I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and look forward to once again celebrating all things in ‘art’ in 2018 with another full and exciting exhibition program.

Dear Friends
After an exhausting six months of uncertainty re the future of the Port Pirie Regional Art
Gallery, I am very pleased to advise that Port Pirie Regional Council will assume the
overall management of the Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery. This will take place over a six
month period of transition.
Your Board and Director have spent many hours looking at what options were available
for the Gallery to move forward and together with Port Pirie Regional Council, are
unanimous that the best and only option was for Council to become more than a major
funding partner.
Changes will mostly only be evident behind the scenes with resource sharing in some
administrative and IT areas, but more importantly the Gallery will be able to interact more
efficiently within the Cultural Precinct, opening up huge benefits for the sharing of
themed events across tourism, the library and the Gallery.
Obviously funding is the dominant advantage, enabling the Gallery to continue to attract
‘Class A’ touring exhibitions and the diversity in art presentation that is expected of our
Gallery.
I am also pleased to advise that our 25 year old climate change air conditioner will finally
be pensioned off, and a new model installed in the 2017/18 financial year.
There is still a little way to go in transitioning to a new operating model, with further
research, liaisons and discussions to come. Change can be a good thing and the
Gallery Board is optimistic that the Gallery will resume its lead in becoming the most
innovative and exciting art presence north of Adelaide.
I can assure you that your Gallery will continue to operate as a leader in bringing art to
the people and people to the arts for Port Pirie and the region.
It would be remiss of me not to mention our Volunteers, who ably support and champion
the Gallery on a day to day basis, connecting to our visitors and assisting the Director
with exhibition installations and events. A big thank you to one and all.
On behalf of the Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery Board of Management I wish all our
Friends a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year.
